In 20 years since I made aliyah, I have never seen such an atmosphere of hate and disgusting racism. Just 10 years ago these rabbis and racists and thugs would have been shamed into hiding. From what I've seen here, and I've seen quite a lot - anyone who has drawn Sarah's ire pretty much deserved it. It would almost always be someone spreading disinformation or slander about Israel, the Israeli people, or Jews, with purely negative intent. Though I'm not too keen on the personal put-downs, her immense knowledge and ability to sift through and rebuff all the lies and bring forth so many supporting facts, and all in perfect fluid English - is nothing short of extraordinary. The one time where I thought Sarah was out of line I mentioned it to her, and she apologized. And oddly enough, those who routinely criticize Sarah are never there to criticize the idiotic rantings of Nour and Salma, which often get quite offensive and spurious. I first read this article on Christmas day. As I was reading the maliciousness of post #2 I received a call from a longtime Jewish friend wishing me a Merry Christmas. It was a reminder of a world that is as yet unknown to people like Salma. Contrary to much of the hatred spewed on this site, the world is full of people warm and generous of spirit. Those people are as likely to be Jewish as they are Budhist or humanist. I read this morning with gratitude, the many responses condemning hate filled rhetoric. Grateful that I did not respond in kind on Christmas morning and grateful for a Jewish friend who unwittingly reminded me of the strength and force of kindness. I hope one day Salma will be graced with the opportunity to know friendship from a Jew. To experience, as we do here in North America, a reality much different from hers. If one were living in Palestine it would be very difficult to understand that often times the first person to speak out against injustice is Jewish. Yes, Islam came from Arabia by force. Mohammad's army conquered the arabian peninsula and more, up to Spain. People who were defeated were told to convert or die. It was then that the arabs came to that part of the world. And yes, through the generations, the children were born into Islam; this was their identity, their religion. This is not an argument. But Palestine as a country never existed. And if one insists that Israel took arab land by force, they must remember when and how Islam came to the area: by force. Some of the communities they defeated were Jewish, as Jews were here before Mohammad was born. It seems that the type of Islam now prevalent is jihadi: thinking that, as "Islam is the only religion" it is ok to kill everyone else if they don't agree. Not much different from the time of Mohammad and his army.
