BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (03.17.11)
Also in many of the States in your United States, including your State of Maryland- go preach to them Maryland Does my state have the death penalty? Yes, Maryland has executed a total of 5 people since 1976. In 2000, Governor Parris Glendening commissioned a study at the University of Maryland to study racial bias in the state's death penalty. During the 2001 legislative session, a bill to enact a moratorium pending completion of that study was passed by the House of Delegates, and would have passed the Senate had it not been blocked by a filibuster. In May 2002, the Governor Parris Glendening enacted a moratorium on executions pending completion and review of the study. Governor Ehrlich lifted the moratorium in January 2003, after the study was released and just days after his inauguration. Maryland's first execution in 6 years was carried out in June 2004, when the state put Stephen Oken to death. In March 2005, death penalty repeals were introduced to both the Senate and the House. What is my governor's position on the death penalty? Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr (R) favors the death penalty. However, he is a sponsor of the Innocence Protection Act. How many people are on Death Row in my state? There are currently 9 prisoners on Death Row in Maryland. Of the 9 Death Row prisoners, 6 are black and 3 are white.
34. Time for reflection rather than whipping up the emotions
Ben Alofs ,   Bangor, UK   (03.17.11)
The murder of innocent civilians, particularly children, is indefensible, which is why the ghastly murder of the Itamar settler family has caused an outpouring of all kinds of emotions: from grief, sadness, shock and shame to fury, anger, hate, bigotry, revenge and unadulterated racism. The writers of several op-ed articles here on Ynet, including Noah Klieger, vent their anger and frustration, but behave rather irresponsibly by whipping up the emotions to the point of hysteria, where the Palestinian community as a whole is made responsible for the outrage in Itamar. Why is it that so few israelis ask themselves why Palestinians have feelings of resentment or hate towards Israel? I have met many Palestinians, in the diaspora in the West, in the refugee camps of Lebanon and Gaza, in the towns, cities and villages of the Westbank and East Jerusalem and in Akka and the Galilee. The one thing that has always struck me, was the relative absence of hatred. The image of the Palestinian Arab as created in Zionist hasbara is a caricature and does not resemble the average Palestinian man or woman. Jewish Israelis are just as human as Palestinian Arabs. If the brutal death of 5 Israeli Jews in Itamar can cause this much emotion and heartbreak amongst Israelis, what emotions do you think Palestinians experience seeing the death of 313 Palestinian children and 116 women, all innocent civilians, killed by the Israeli army during 'Cast Lead' in 2009? I can see the defensive reflexes already, like: they were used by Hamas as human shields; it was a "battle"; they had it coming after all the Qassam missiles falling on Israel. But all these - in my opinion false - arguments, designed to ease the Israeli conscience, did not soothe the emotions of the Palestinians in Gaza, who picked the mangled bodies of their children from the rubble. There were 313 dead children in Gaza in January 2009.. Now there are 3 dead children in Itamar. It hurts doesn't it? What is the difference between a murderer who knifes children to death, who is able to see the expression of terror in their eyes, who can even smell their blood, and the airforce pilot or gunner who fires a missile or tank shell into a building killing women and children? The gunner or the pilot will never see the terror in the eyes of the children or smell their blood. Some may try and make themselves believe as if no one got killed in the blast caused by them. Others have no such feelings of remorse at all. The knifer and the distant killer are both murderers. The end result is the same on both sides: grieving relatives, furious compatriots, the call for vengeance. The bloodshed will continue as long as Israel continues with its disastrous occupation of the territories captured in 1967. The Palestinians will never give up their homeland. Neither will Jewish Israelis give up the state they established in 1948. I believe that a firm majority of Palestinians since 1967 has gradually come to terms with that fact. It is time that a firm majority of Israelis comes to term with a Palestinian state in the occupied territories and force the settlers to return home for their own good. It is the only way forward to prevent future bloodshed.

BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (03.17.11)
I'll make my response rather brief There was bloodshed long before the 1967 Israeli Victory, which captured land that your side had been launching attacks from for years We had accepted a Palestine State, at the same time that we accepted a Jewish State, the fact is that Palestinian's didn't want to accept their State, they were deceived by their leaders into believing that if they won the war against the Jews, that they would return to captured Jewish property, which was to have included the new State of Israel These are the facts, from Arab sources, read them and weep http://www.standwithus.com/pdfs/flyers/biglies06.pdf Ben, as one Ben to another, take your old fish tale, wrap it in paper, peddle it elsewhere, from where I sit, it smells

for referring to this excellent website re the fleeing of Arabs from Israel in 1948. The situation was complex but your reference helped clarify some of the misconceptions for me. I never knew such an excellent website existed.
38. Ben Alofs #34: Your references to Arabs
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (03.17.11)
residing in the Westbank are quite different than my perceptions. I reside in a Yishuv across the Green Line in Gush Etzion. In this region, about four out of five Arabs prefer that the Israeli state remains. There is an understanding that with us, the economic situation for the average Arab is improved, that we are kinder than the Arab leaders and that we actually fight corruption as opposed to accepting it as a way of life. They also see that they are no better off under Arab administrations, that all the monies funded to them have gone to their leaders, most recently to Abbas and before that to Arafat, and that in spite of western funding efforts it is only the presence of Israel which has endowed them with much better living standards, i.e., life expectancy. This is the report from one region of the mideast, Ben, from actual people who live here, not in Wales.
39. #4 Bunnie Meyer complete nonsense
Avi ,   Israel   (03.17.11)
It is a proven fact that the death penalty does not deter those who intend to commit murder and in additon executing such people only glorifies them to the status of martyers. This is not LA here but they you seem pretty clueless abour reality here in Israel .
40. To #5 Bunny and #39 Avi: You are both right!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (03.17.11)
There is a very good reason for introducing the Death Penalty, preferably by hanging, for acts of terrorism, The reason is Justice although most would say revenge. However, the murder of the Vogels certainly was a heinous crime but is it more terrible than the murder of six members of the Ushrenko family, "The six Ushrenko family members – Dmitry and Tatiana, their children Revital, 3, and Netanel, four months, and Dmitry's parents, Eduard and Ludmila, were stabbed to death on Friday night, October 16, in their apartments in central Rishon Lezion." (YnetNews). In this case the alleged murderer, Damian Kerlik, lay in wait for the family and killed them. So the question is should we execute all murderers? Certainly, as Avi quite correctly wrrote, the Death Penalty is not a deterent but in the legal world Justice must be done and Justice must be seen to be done. Yes,the death penalty should be mandatory for acts of terrorism and murder provided "intent" to kill, or premeditation, is proven and there is NO doubt whatsoever as to the guilt of the killer. The one "good" thing about executing killers. They will never kill again!
41. Muslim Nazi Ties and Stupid Backstabbing Leftists
American Sabrah ,   Givas Shmilkeh   (03.17.11)
The Grand Mufti collaborated with Hitler to annihilate the Jews in Europe so that they won't migrate to Israel. The Muslims in Albania had an SS unit. The Nazis almost invaded Israel for that matter. So yes there were Muslim-Nazi ties. A lot of these Arab terrorists admire Hitler and wish to continue the Nazi agenda to exterminate Jews. Yes, I believe the death penalty to should be reinforced to convicted Arab terrorists. Those defending their homeland should not be charged with crimes against humanities. To all those Arab apologists who think this is too extreme, if you had it your way, Adolph Eichman shouldn't have been hanged. The Nazi war criminals would have been exonerated and released. Either you are clueless about the Arab mentality or you are a bunch of self hating ass kissers who would rather see Jews die than offend the Muslim. In that case, you should be charged with treason. You bleed hard treacherous leftists are more part of the problem than the solution. You pose a threat to Israeli society. The Fogel family deserves justice which you won't acknowledge.History is repeating itself and if you continue to live in denial, then it will be you who will fall victim, not us the true Zionists.

43. Raising their villages? Didn't the Nazis do that to Jews?
Justice ,   Israel   (03.17.11)
Yes, the Death Penalty for terrorism and particularly brutal and multiple murder, even by Israeli Citizens, should be applied but raising the villages of the perpetrators would bring us down to their level! If a settler from Itamar kills Palestinians are your going to burn Itamar down to the ground? The question is do we want Justice or revenge?
44. To: Avi at No. 39
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.17.11)
I am not a fan of the death penalty. That said, I wish to point out that the death penalty is not designed to be a deterrent. Were that the case, the U.S. would take executions outdoors and make them as gory as possible. Of all the reasons that certain American states have capital punishment -- and some are better reasons than others -- I assure you that deterrence is not a factor. In England, crowds would gather at Tyburn to watch pickpockets being hanged -- while pickpockets were busy worked the crowds. The death penalty is first and foremost a punishment, and has been held to be constitutional by every Supreme Court. There was a moratorium on executions between 1972 and 1976 in the United States (Furman to Gregg), but that was only to cause the individual states to modify their capital punishment statutes to comply with the Court's pronouncements in Furman. Not all of the states in the Union have capital punishment, but most allow it. It's what the American people seem to want.
45. Almost too stupid for words...
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (03.17.11)
The problem is, as anyone with eyes not clouded by racist hate and unfounded assumptions can see, is that nobody has either acknowledged perpetrating the act, or been arrested let alone convicted. So, what are you really talking about? For some, the perpetrators are automatically Palestinian wothout offering a shred of proof. Therefore, they wish to punish, or allow to be punished, all Palestinians regardless of who the actual perpetrators are. Then they whine about 'Nazis' and their perpetual victimhood status. You really want to know why many are apathetic? Becaise we have witnessed the shedding of way too much blood, particularly at the hands of the Jewish establishment which holds Israeli Jews harmless no matter what crimes they perpetrate. Also, because the killers have not been caught, and anyone trying to use this tragedy to score political points is a despicable monster.
46. The death penalty is neither ...
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (03.17.11)
deterrence or punishment. It is preventative. Once a person murders another, they have to be executed, because there is no deterrence for them. They have already proven that they don't care. And if they don't care, it's not punishment. The death penalty prevents them from ever doing that crime again. Besides since their victim does get a chance to live, why should their murderer? No we must make any terrorist attack a mandatory sentence.

We can rest assured, that if we want stupid words, you'll be in the forefront of those uttering them Imad Mughniyya Group has already accepted responsibility “Imad Mughniyya Group”: A thing that makes you go “hmmmm…” Posted on Sat, 12 Mar 2011 by Andrew Ma’an News Agency, 12 Mar. 2011: An armed faction calling itself the “Imad Mughniyya Group” has claimed responsibility for stabbing to death an Israeli family of five in the illegal settlement of Itamar in the northern West Bank. Israeli authorities have dismissed statements from the group in the past, as it has claimed responsibility for other operations that may have been the work of others. It is believed to be linked to Fatah. http://ceinquiry.us/2011-03-12-imad-mughniyya-group Just one more tiny fact, since you mentioned "Racist Hate", I have yet to see you say anything that was Pro-Israel You have witnessed nothing, you're merely a loudmouth Jew Hater, hiding in the USA that has access to a computer

50. Why r these murderers different from other murderers?
Israeli ,   Israel   (03.17.11)
Why is it ok to give community service work as punishment to people who use their cars to murder other people but Dafka the murderers of the Fogel family need to get the death penalty? Why is it ok to allow the murderers of the Taxi Driver Erick Roth, z"l to go on furlough and escape the country but Dafka the murderers of the Fogel family need to get the death penalty? Why is it ok to allow allow Ami Popper who murdered what was it 6 Arabs to go on furlough with his family and get into a traffic accident and kill his family but Dafka the murderers of the Fogel family need to get the death penalty? Why was it ok to exchange Samir Kuntar who murdered 4 year old Einat Haran in cold blood and Yael Haran who was only two years old but Dafka the murderers of the Fogel family need to get the death penalty? Four examples are enough I've made my point...that point is that while the murder of the Fogel family is a terrible and horrific event it is very unfortunately no different than the murder of any other human being in Israel. Israel doesn't have the death penalty and that is as it should be...do go read the Talmud to understand why!
51. #50 the voice of ignorance
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (03.17.11)
The difference is called intent. As for lack of a death penalty - in that too you are wrong. We do have it for war-crimes, which genocide is one. And yes we have used it as well. Must live in TA, nobody else is that ignorant of Jewish or Israeli laws.
52. #51 please do learn to read carefully...
Israeli@ #50 ,   Israel   (03.17.11)
I gave various examples with different types of intent all of which ended in murder, some were national crimes and some were negligent crimes and some were premediated murders. Really you should learn to read more carefully before blasting comments out of your left ear as if you were passing abdominal gas! Of course I know that we have one only one category for which we have the death penalty and that is for crime against humanity. And it was used once, just once in the case of Adolf Eichmann a Nazi. Eichmann was found guilty of crimes against humanity and was executed by hanging on 31 May 1962 His ashes were scattered over the Mediterranean Sea. Now having a little think it occurs to me that given that Israel has only used the death penalty once and that was against a Nazi perhaps now I have a clearer explanation for the headline for this Op-Ed piece! Of course the other reason for the title might be that the Fogel family was repatriated from Gaza and as we all remember many of the Jewish families living in Gaza equated themselves with the Holocaust and Holocaust survivors. There was actually a whole debate within the right about using Holocaust symbols and the Gaza Jewish families choose to ignore that. Or have you already forgotten (presuming of course that you ever knew). No I don't live in TA, I live in Jerusalem and no I am not ignorant about Israeli Law and/or Talmudic Law. I think perhaps you are the ignorant one and finding yourself frustrated at your lack of any real knowledge or ability to debate correctly you just blow personal attacks out of your left ear as if you were passing abdominal gas. Cheer up old Gee in Zikron Yaakov one day you will grow up and learn how to debate respectfully with your fellow Israelis! And then it might even be worth having a serious conversation with you!
53. Death is too easy
joe ,   toronto, canada   (03.18.11)
I suggest life in prison, as that would be more punishing than the death penalty.
54. noah kliegers 'execute modern day nazis' article
sara leviten ,   london,uk   (03.18.11)
It is highly irresponsible to publish Noah Kleiger's article telling the world that the fogel's assasins are nazis. on what basis? has the culprit/s been caught and named? do the settlers live under a nazi like rule with nazi like policies and principles? I appreciate that mr kleiger is a survivor from auchwitz and this incident has sparked off his emotions but i expect y-net to be more responsible with who it choses to publish. jews calling every atrocity and their perpetrators nazis devalues the holocaust and makes us as bad as everyone else shouting nazi when we should reserve it as to not to undervalue the real nazis
55. To #39

The death penalty certainly does act as a deterrent. That murderer will never murder anybody else. Secondly, the God of Abraham in His own words - an eye for an eye.
