1. Liberate the Golan?
Abba ,   Modi'in, Israel   (03.25.11)
Don't they know the Golan was liberated in '67?
2. The art of distraction
Brod ,   USA   (03.25.11)
The art of distracting the Protestors is finding and creating an enemy-by talking about Golan. By doing this, the Assad clan thinks they can stamp out the popular uprising against their tyranny. The fact is the modern, young and educated Arabs are sick and tired of being shackled by the tyranny of their self-appointed rulers who enrich themselves while leaving the crumbs of their countries' wealth to the masses.
3. EVEN THE SKY IS NO LIMIT TO IGNORANCE.
FO ,   Belgium   (03.25.11)
How is it possible, Roee Nahmias to write a sentence like "Israel captured the Golan Heights in 1967". I suppose your ignorance is such that you ignore that the Golan Heights were an integral part of the Jewish National Home as decided by the League of Nations in 1922. Great Britain, the Mandatory of Palestine ceded in 1923 the Golan Heights, in a capricious and arbitrary fashion, by breaching Article 5 of the League's resolutions, to the French, Mandatory of Syria, in order to secure Mosul's oil fields to Irak. To improve your knowledge, read the following extract of a report prepared for the "U.S. Center for Security Policy" by a team of experts, including Prof. Eugene Rostow, Dean of the School of Law of Yale; and author of UN Resolution 242: "Israel's decision to impose its Laws on the Golan Heights on December 14, 1981, had eventually "RIGHTED the WRONG" that was commited by the British in March 1923. ... The Golan Heights as they are known TODAY were never part of Syrian Real Estate, but part of the Palestine Mandate". So Roee Nahmias, Israel did not "capture" a territory not belonging to her according to International Law.
4. there is a real case right now there will be a war
zionist forever   (03.25.11)
If Assad can't calm down the public and thinks he is in danger of being toppled he may well decide to go to war with Israel. In this case it wouldn't matter if he lost because he would be seen as the hero fighting a noble goal which would boost his popularity and the momentum for change would die down. The fact that the public are calling for an invasion of the Golan will only increase Assad's possible decision to invade the Golan. At most times he would try to avoid directly confronting Israel and prefer the use of Hizbollah because when he looses the people will feel humiliated and want him out. If he is fighting for his survival he has nothing to loose and it gives him a chance at political survival. Attacking Israel for political survival is an old tried and tested tactic which works so there is no reason to think Assad would not try it.
5. Unfortunately..
John ,   Herzliya, Israel   (03.25.11)
..all these "revolutions" can turn in that way. What do you think the government in Egypt will do after a year, when they will run out of bread for the "revolutionaries"? In Lybia? In Syria? In Lebanon? In Jordan? In Yemen? They will have to find an enemy. So, be careful Israel, very careful and prepare very well.
6. Yah liberate Golan & get rockets into Israel northern cities
(03.25.11)
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
7. THESE PROTESTS ARE RUN BY ASSAD
stude ham   (03.25.11)
desperately trying to capitalize on what this tyrant believes to be the 'good image' of these arab mobs abroad. ps... in case you didn't know this... israel liberated golan fom the syrian tyrants back in 1967.
8. defensible borders
Alexi   (03.25.11)
beilin, olmert, livni, baidetz and barak have been totally wrong about golan. it would be madness and suicide to give it to syria, which today can double the onlsaught to the mediterannean in suprise which would cut israel in half. Barak like dayan would call for fall back position to set up new frontiers an dnegotiate with syria whose regime could be replaced 1 month later by a moslem brotherhood. Israel has to have golan, jordan valley and a peaceful entity in gaza, case closed. Coming wars will reduce the demographic problem. Oz had said that when israel leaves lebanon back in 2000, hebollah would disappear as a threat. I need no lessons from him, burg, ginsburg, beilin, ben ami. They are blind to history and real arab intentions. Iif israelis do not want to fight like olmert and livni, they should consider relocating as it is impossible to live with islamic arabs over the long term. Its just impossible and if you want proof, ask europe and israelis who live in mixed cities.
9. Re 3, you are reciting falsification of history
Richard   (03.25.11)
Read "History and Peace: Revisiting two Zionist myths" by Adam Garfinkle. The majority of Golan was always part of the French mandate, a smaller part in northwestern Golan was ceded back to Syria, while the Palestine mandate received other lands in Syria around the Sea of Galilee and lands in Lebanon. Syria was connected to the Sea of Galilee before this.
10. Syrians you have lost the Golan remember you have a big land
Daniela   (03.25.11)
you don't need additional space. Forget the Golan, you are waisting your time. Instead of thinking about the Golan try to improve your life.
11. Druze for Syria
Israeli 2   (03.25.11)
Just do it and you will be no more.
12. Are decisions of the Leage of Nations
Nora Tel Aviv   (03.25.11)
...binding even today? How ?
13. Their first concern should be their well-being
Suzanne   (03.25.11)
not if their government is ready to start another war. Bah.
14. Being a Druze from the Golan, Buqaata, I tell the Houranis
Said ,   Buqaata, Israel   (03.25.11)

18. # 14 I agree.
A. Hourani ,   Israel   (03.25.11)
19. #14 Don't Brag About Being A Quisling
World Citizen ,   the world   (03.25.11)
Some of you Druze serve in the Israeli military in the Occupied Territories, in an army that oppresses the Palestinian people. This won't be forgotten very easily. It may come back to haunt you. The Syrian government is a dictatorship that has benefitted the family of Assad and the country of Israel. Imagine Israel surrounded by democratic governments actually working together on the problem of Israeli aggression. That is a real possibility and a issue that the Israeli is trying to prepare for. Are the Occupied Territories really worth it?
20. Protesters
Hal ,   Usa   (03.25.11)
I have a feeling that the protesters were calling out Asshead's brother for being a coward and daring him to to liberate the Golan as proof of his stones, so to speak. I seriously doubt that these Syrian protesters want what would follow a Syrian move on the Golan. Just sayin'...................
21. More Ignorant Protesters how laughable
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (03.25.11)
Let's see what are chanting? According to the article: "The people want to bring down the government" Or Syrians later turned out at the Omari mosque to chant "freedom, revolution". Great they want to "bring down the government" and replace it with what? They don't know, big surprise. They want "freedom, revolution", what's that exactly? They again, don't know. Who would be in charge? Let's see what else have they said? Well here they said: "Muhammad al-Mehamid claimed that protesters in the city captured an Iranian sniper" Great has the news covered this? Is it true? Are there pictures of this so called Iranian sniper? Why not? So far we have allegations of Hezbollah mercenaries, and now Iranian snipers, killing Syrians. But the Syrian protesters are calling Bashir Assad's brother a coward, why? For killing Syrians, instead of attacking the IDF and the Golan? Now I'm sure that's just a rhetorical chant, but interesting, isn't it? They still have to have Israel, like all the countries in the region, they need Israel, for hate. They need a common enemy to coalesce around, and hate. As if the Golan will ever be back in Syrian hands? Of course it won't. After all technically speaking, Israel has already complied fully with Resolution 242, and the Golan is needed now, and always, for Israeli security. With Syria currently acting as a conduit for weapons smuggling (from Iran) to Hezbollah and Hamas, both enemies of Israel, and both openly dedicated to Israel's destruction. Why would Israel ever consider returning the Golan to Syria? The very idea is ludicrous. Just as the International blockade by Israel against Hamas and Gaza is legal, Israel keeping the Golan is not only legal but vital to Israel's security.
22. I guess the men in Syria are tired of just honor killings...
Sharon   (03.25.11)
Now they want a war with Israel...Is it THAT boring living in a male dominated, blood thirsty society? Maybe get some satellite TV...?
23. Every Rule Has An Exception
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem   (03.25.11)
Syria and Lebanon are the only two arab countries that badly need stability as a top priority because of the state of war with Israel and their status as confrontation states.I do not think Syria can afford the luxuries of western-style democracy and freedom at this juncture !
24. TO NORA FROM TEL AVIV # 12 .
FO ,   Belgium   (03.25.11)
You ask, Nora, are decisions of the League of Nations binding even today? Well yes they are, thanks to Article 80 of the Charter of the United Nations. If you are interested to deepen the subject, I would suggest to you to read articles written by e.g. Prof. Eugene Rostow, author of UN resolution 242, that became the corner-stone of diplomacy concerning the Middle-East. You can find everything on Internet.
25. Golan is Israel, never to leave Israel's hands.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (03.25.11)
26. #19 world citizen The Agression

28. The quisling is you # 19
(03.25.11)
5th columnist who wants the entire world to be under Sharia law against most world citizens' will. This is why you call yourself deceptively "World Citizen" to give a false impression that you are in the majority hiding the fact that you are a violent genocidal minority.
29. Should someone send arms to both sides?
David   (03.25.11)
Might keep them busy for a while. Think Iraq against Iran. Now that was a party!
30. A DIVINE INSPIRED VARNING TO ISRAEL - ? -
Orao. ,   Srbia.   (03.25.11)
"Maher you coward. Send your troops to liberate the Golan," FROM - Protesters in the Syrian city of Deraa shouted slogans on Friday denouncing Maher Assad, brother of the Syrian president and head of the Republican Guard, a Reuters witness said. "Maher you coward. Send your troops to liberate the Golan," thousands chanted as they headed to the main square in the city after the funeral of at least five protesters killed by security forces this week. Israel captured the Golan Heights in a 1967 war. NR 4 HAS THE POINT HERE., NR 7 HAS AN INTERESSTING TOPIC AS WELL. I USUALLY DONT WRITE ABOUT MY OWN VISIONS, BUT THAT IS THE VISION I HAVE HAD MYSELF, AN SYRIAN ATTACK TO TAKE THE GOLAN. THIS WAS A LONG TIME AGO, AND I DONT KNOW IF THE VISION IS OBSOLETE TODAY OR NOT. Orao.Srbia.
