The officers involved in this case will lie through their teeth and try to discredit the victim. Canada's authorities are notorious for covering each others' butts in these situation and will drag things out through false statements for years, at the expense of the Canadian taxpayers and the victim's dignity. Be thorough, record everything and make a detailed statement of everything that occurred while still fresh in your mind an never give up. Add a couple of million dollars for every year they refuse to come clean with your case, and demand that criminal charges be filed against the officers involved. Do not cut them any break as they will take any advantage they can to destroy your life if they can. I've seen this happen many times in my life growing up in Canada to friends, family, neighbours. Google "Susan Nellis" for one clear example of the systematic abuse of authority common in Canada.

The German customs people who initially had suspicions about him and "warned" the Canadians about him were definitely ignorant and rude, but they were actually working according to legitimate anti-terrorist profiling, at least at the outset. If they had better training, they might have been aware that some Israeli Jews can be black. That seems to be what raised their initial suspicions that he was using a false passport. As Mr Damka himself said, unfortunately not too many Ethiopian Israelis have the financial wherewithal for much leisure travel abroad and the German airport security rarely sees many Ethiopian Israelis, that this excuses the refusal to allow him to contact the Israeli consulate to clear up the matter. As for the "certain criteria" to enter Canada, I wonder if that was a reference to how much funds a foreign traveler has. Canada, like many Western countries (including Israel), is concerned about people staying and working illegally (in addition to terrorism). Therefore, it's common to ask questions about travelers' finances, ask how much is in a bank account,etc. and even to demand proof, and if a traveler can't give satisfactory answers, to deny entry. I'm not saying that this justifies Mr Damka's treatment or refusing to let him call the consulate, but it may explain a lot.

I have been going to germany since 1999 about 3 times a year from the USA. My passport is U.S. and says Born in Israel. Never once a problem. I am indeed white and kinda look more german that many germans, but still.. And that's in both FRA and MUC

Canada is very peaceful and tolerant. I'm surprised and saddened that you had such a terrible time trying to visit. Some of the people who work in airport security are sociopathic and definitely not representative of most Canadians, so don't give up hope. as most Germans think that every Israeli is Ashkenazim and the average boarder guard most likely doesn't know that there are Israelis of Ethiopian origin. In this case I believe it's a very thin line between racism and legitimate suspicion. However, nobody of course should be humiliated and these incidents happen far too often. Maybe airport interrogations should generally be recorded on film so that passengers have evidence when being mistreated to get compensation.

I feel sorry for Mr. Damka. If there was really no reason for the authorities to pick on him then he certainly received a very raw deal. He should get an apology and some sort of compensation. He isn't answerable for thuggish behaviour of security at Ben Gurion and thuggish behaviour at one airport doesn't justify thuggish behaviour at a different airport.. There were many reports on travelers being harassed at Ben Gurion airport lately and many talkbackers certainly seemed to be less enraged about that. As to those who claim that this wouldn't happen in the US they are apparently smoking some strong weed.

This is a great example of a subjective report presented as fact. Whatever seems to have happened to Mr. Damka must have been for a reason. How many Jews and Israelis do you think fly from Frankfurt every day? How many black people fly into Canada every day? Mr Damka jumps to all kinds of wild conclusions - as regretable as it might be if really there was no reason for his treatment. It was certainly not because he was Jewish and/or black. As for a Frankfurt investigator allegedly shouting "Juden, Juden" I assume Mr Damka himself is the only witness for that. Certainly a great detail to spice up the story though...
