The U.S. is in a corner. It does not want to veto a U.N. declaration of Palestinian statehood. It does not want to be left alone as sole defender of Israel. But the plan will most likely not work. The Palestinians have the sense that they can demand anything and get for it one- hundred and fifty U.N. votes. They have the sense that diplomatically they are invulnerable and need yield nothing. Beside this they are divided . And even more importantly 'Hamas' aims to actively destroy us, and Fatah to destroy the Jewish state by diplomatic and demographic means. The U.S. has to understand that a real peace deal is thus impossible because the Palestinians are not ready for it.

I agree except to point out that the ersatz "Palestinians" are not refugees. They are displaced persons, who left voluntarily. You cannot fault Israel because their brother Arabs refused to absorb them and give them homes. Although I do note for the record that the ersatz "Palestinians" have been kicked out of Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Oman, Muscat and Kuwait. Looks like their brother Arabs cannot stand them. I wonder why. It is common knowledge that thousands of ersatz "Palestinians" got themselves put on the UNRWA rolls for the purpose of getting free food and other perks. Thousands of the ersatz "Palestinians" on those rolls have died of natural causes, but they remain on the rolls because their surviving family members can collect their benefits! It's a racket; it always has been. The most grossly overfunded United Nations agency paying benefits and providing food to people who have been dead and, in some cases, were never even born. It doesn't matter, though, William -- the ersatz "Palestinian" so-called "leadership" will never agree to it. It's very tempting to think that Abbas continues to push a "right of return" because he kinows that Israel will never agree -- it's a red line. That way, he can continue to pocket millions and millions of dollars in fraudulent aid, much of which flows directly to him. That's quite a racket they've got going, and they are loathe to part with it. What a sleazy bunch!

Let's not forget the matter of six wars, all started by the Arabs and won by Israel. Let's not forget seven decades of unrelenting Arab terror. Sorry, but there is absolutely no precedent to compelling Israel to go back to square one. You cannot undo nearly seventy years of history, and you cannot change international law and precedent. The ersatz "Palestinians" are victims of their own bad choices and their own corrupt leadership who chose terror over common sense. The ersatz "Palestinians" are a vanquished people. Make their leadership and fellow Arabs who spurred them to wage war instead of peace pay the price; not Israel.

It wasn't their country. Go back as far as the Ottoman census rolls; you will read that the true Palestinians are the Jews and are identified as such. Arabs were always listed as "Arabs" or "Bedouins." The British maintained the practice throughout the Mandate period. Keep in mind that all of Palestine (except the part illegally lopped off by the British to create the Kingdom of the Transjordan and those parts to the north stolen by Syria and Lebanon) was non-sovereign territory. The original offer was to create two countries -- one tiny Jewish state and one very much larger Arab state. The Jews accepted partition; the Arabs did not. They chose to go to war instead. And lost. Too bad. Can't put toothpaste back into the tube, and after six wars and seven decades of unrelenting Arab terror, there is no reason for Israel to cede one single inch. Oh .... did I mention that the ersatz "Palestinians" have rejected a two state solution on three separate and distinct occasions? Most recently, the rejected an offer which would have given them 90% of the West Bank and East Jerusalem as a capital. They chose to start the second intifada instead. Of course, that was rather a disastrous decision, but it is not Israel's fault that the ersatz "Palestinians" are congenitally incapable of making reasoned choices. You're fed up? Yet Israel's enemies unwittingly saved us by refusing it. They weren't willing to wait a decade to destroy us. They wanted us gone now. That is why Arafat rejected Oslo. Had Arafat accepted Oslo, and had Israel allowed it's implementation, Israel would not exist today. However, Israel can't forever count on our enemies' stupidity and extremism to save us. Aside from the questionable abilities of the unelected Palestinian leadership to run a divided state, the matter of Israeli security is unsolvable. No one believes that a Palestinian entity on the "West Bank" would not be armed to the teeth and would not provide an existential threat to the Jewish State.
