Apologising shows the world you are weak and don't believe in the right to self-defence. This is crazy. Such a suggestion is ridiculous and should be laughed at. At the same time we should take back Gaza and give people their homes back. Stop being dam soft Israel. We've seen the miracles of 1948, 1967, 1971 etc and yet we still think by 'being nice' to other countries who are clearly in the wrong that we will somehow win them over. The only way to win people over is to show you stand for something and you are firmly committed to it, namely a secure state of the land of Israel.

Dear John, the Turkish government has a much stronger negotiating position than Israel, because it does not need a good relationship with Israel. Let's be real, Israel has no friends in the Middle East and is in the midst of a difficult and potentially dangerous political and legal struggle over the West Bank/ Judea and Samaria. Turkey, on the other hand, is respected (not always loved) by most countries in the Middle East and is gaining in popularity by pressuring Israel. The Turkish military may want close relations with Israel, but the Turkish government is not so eager to be close friends with Israel, and very happy to show the Turkish military who is in charge now. So Israel must choose: apologize to Turkey and slightly improve relations (do not expect miracles) or further isolate itself. It is a rotten choice, I admit. But politics is the art of the possible, maybe it is wise to swallow your pride now and apologize to Turkey.

Without Israel supplying spare parts and maintaining the military equipment they sold to Turkey, the Turkish military will be weakened. The agreements and good relationships are two-way street. So, why should Israel apologize after Turkey initiated hostilities and provocations of Israel? We should be friends with countries surrounding Turkey. And let's not forget their Achilles feet. I know it's only 80 odd opinions, but it seems pretty clear, that the majority of people baulk at the idea of apologising - it just CANNOT happen. Turkey is under constant threat from being taken over by radical elements, and Israel as an allied country must be sensitive to issue. Turkey has a radical element, which they mistakenly let sail on the flotilla, (they did not allow the most recent one to go). In honor of its ties with Turkey, Israel has to treat radical Turkish elements with kid gloves, to save their ally from embarassment of its dead citizens. They do this by avoiding direct confrontation with lightly armed citizenswhenever possible, like local police forces regularly do. Israel has demonstrated its policy change from the first encounter, by clearing the deck of the flotilla with water cannons first, then sending ARMED troops. Israel needs to apologize for not having the sensitivity to understand this need before. Lack of sensitivity is a deformity which most Israelis suffer from, so it shouldnt be a suprise that this happened. The Rachel Corrie incident happened in the same darkness.
