61. New Turkish Submarines
WNAJR ,   Tirana, Albania   (09.12.11)
When up against the Greek Navy, Turkish warships become submarines. The Turks will have similar results should they go up against the IDF. Hope they are that stupid.
62. To: David at No. 39
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (09.12.11)
The Turkish Air Force attacked the Turkish Navy in 1974? Now I KNOW Israel has nothing to fear from Turkey .... while Turkey has a great deal to fear from Israel.
63. The turkey is playing chicken
zionist forever   (09.12.11)
Turkish warships face off with Israeli warships and we see who sinks the first ship. Even Ahmadinejad has not threatened to attack Israeli naval vessels. The first shot the Turkish ships fire will under international law be considered an act of war and Israel is going to fire back probably followed by the fighter jets to come and sink the Turkish ships. Turkey will officially declare war and they will send more ships and planes of their own and we will have a shoot em up. Its time to kick Turkey out of NATO and stop supplying them with American weapons before the Erdogan starts a war. What it is proof of though is its time for Israel to stop taking the attitude that the IDF & IAF get 99% of the military budget and the navy gets whats left the way things have traditionally been. The sixth submarine is the first time the Israeli government has spent big money on the navy in a very long time. All the other submarines were either free from Germany or heavily subsidized and the most advanced surface ship the SAAR 5 of which we only have 3 are now going on 20 years old. The SAAR 4 is over 30 years whilst Turkey, Egypt and Iran all spend big money on their navies. Time we realized that not all wars are fought on the ground or in the air and we invested in the navy.
64. Israel Vs Nato... w00T!!
abe ,   usa   (09.12.11)
the precedent has clearly establish that a war against a NATO member is a war against all NATO members, is that what Israelis want ?
65. excuse me??
ira berkowitz ,   emeryville, calif.   (09.12.11)
the turkish navy is supposedly going to disarm ISRAELI warships? a question for Turkey: you and WHO ELSE is going to do this? I wish to inform you, brutal turks that you are, that what you propose isn't going to happen, unless, of course, you desire to have some of your warships sitting on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea! Turk fighters are good at close in combat with knives and sticks, especially against helpless unarmed older people and bulgarian prisoners of war whose hands are tied. however, if you mess with the israeli navy, their high tech weaponry will leave your ships charred and afire, and sunken. in the words af the late Gamel Abdel Nassar, "Ahlan wa Sahlan.", since you seem to be going the same route as he did,
66. #59Marcelo,It wasn't quite like that.
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (09.12.11)
In fact, the RN lost FEWER warships than had been expected;even loss of an aircraft carrier was expected and didn't occur. The lesson from the Falklands is that the Argentinian Air Force operating from home was swept out of the skies by a scratch British force taken thousands of miles on carriers, some improvised, because the British had TECHNICAL superiority. In a local conflict with Turkey,Israel would have the advantage of BOTH technical superiority AND operating from home base. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
67. war?
oleg ,   ukraine   (09.12.11)
Israeli people gives reference always war of 67 . Arabs lived under Ottoman administration for centuries and they do not have state and army experiences, even today. So same thing will be applied to Turkey is far away the truth. Countries which experienced imperial past and strong state and military tradition like Turkey and Russia act definitely differently and genuinely much more than the beginners. Technical ability rules to some extent. What about geography? What about population? logistics ability? What about close ethnical ties with some countries at the region?(Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkans) one should ask the question. Is there any possibility that Israeli army can invade Turkey? Absolutely not. And can Turkey invade Israel? There is a possibility. So at the end of the day Israel even wins the fighting at the beginning in the long run will definitely lose. But war never will be occurred between Israel and Turkey i believe.
68. Does Turkey Really Want the Responsibility?
BC ,   USA   (09.12.11)
So Turkey escorts, or at the very least, protects these so called Freedom Flotilla's that deliver its cargo to Gaza. Lets say Israel relents and allows this to happen. When the missles, bombs and bullets that are delivered (instead of food and medicines they claim to be carrying) are used to attack Israel from Gaza, will Turkey be held responsible? Will Turkey come to Israels aid? You must be joking. When did Turkey become Iran's puppet?
69. Time to kick Turkey out of NATO
Matt1234 ,   USA   (09.12.11)
Think it is time to kick Turkey out of Nato since they are now ruled like and by Iran. Shia's rule Turkey now.
70. Problem?
John Savard ,   Edmonton, Canada   (09.12.11)
This sounds like great news for the people of Cyprus. Turkey attacks an Israeli ship preventing possible weapons reaching terrorists in Gaza; Israel carries out regime change in Turkey.
71. Thanks "looking for answers"
Fairness4All ,   London   (09.12.11)
Finally, some sanity thanks to "looking for answers". This is not the first time utter trash is reported by ynet w/no link to source and no other outlet reporting the same. Yes, erdogan has a bit of the Bush fascist in him, but heavens no he isn't stupid enough to defacto declare war on an ally of the US. And just to thumb my nose at the crazy war mongers on this forum, depending on which source you read Turkey has either the 4th or 5th strongest army in the world, with a much bigger navy and a comparable Airforce to Israel, all w/combat experience. It's almost embarrassing that some of you would compare them to Egypt circa '67 - a war which Israel started by the way. :) Peace out folks - only way things will settle down!
72. Your comment.
jude ,   London   (09.12.11)
1. The Turks are not arabic in ethnic origin, they are Turks - from Middle Asia, being Muslim does not require one to be an Arab. 2. If there is a naval showdown, that would be disasterous for Israel in every sphere, including loss of life, since Turkeys navy is much larger than Israels. Turkish technology is pretty good & firing guns accurately is not " rocket science " Your comments are inaccurate. 3. Meglomaniac * ( spelt correctly ) may describe Erdogan's tendancy , but its not a genetic destiny.. Ataturk would at this point be rolling in his grave, he was vehemently against Islamists such as Erdogan & his coherts in the Ak Party & drove forward a secular Turkish republic .
73. Marmara was part of Islamist (Turkish) war against Israel.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (09.12.11)
74. Islamists boarded Turkey, on course to sink her.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (09.12.11)
75. Islamist Turkey OUT of NATO, asap!
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (09.12.11)
76. sources?
boulos ,   huson, jordan   (09.12.11)
i can't find any other sources of erdogan's comments or use of the word difuse. i wonder if this is another mistranslation or misinterpretation.
77. #64 Think you will find NATO does not support Turkey in thi
Matt1234 ,   USA   (09.12.11)
If Turkey is depending on NATO help in a war they start think they might get a surprise. Turkey should be kicked out.
78. loser
Chimo ,   USA   (09.12.11)
That sure doesn't say much for you now does it? If Erdogan is your interpretation of a strong leader then i have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. Any moron can make threats, and Erdogan certainly qualifies as a moron, there fore you are obvioulsy someone of very low intellignece and most likely a coward as well
79. 64
zionist forever   (09.12.11)
NATO is never going to join Turkey in any war against Israel especially if it was initiated by Erdogan. If Turkey starts firing on Israeli warships to disable their weapons it will be committing an act of war and NATO is more likely to expel Turkey that join in the fight. The NATO doctrine of a war against one of us is a war against all of us is theoretical and at the end of the day politics will be the deciding factor not is a member of NATO under attack. In an election year I can't see even Muslim loving Obama taking Turkey's side.
80. oleg # 67
ira berkowitz ,   emeryville, ca.   (09.12.11)
oleg, your calling attention to, "Countries which experienced imperial past and strong state and military tradition", & your attempt to make a distinction between israel's foes in 1967, and the turks begs one question. what happened to Turkey's imperial past and military tradition when they were defeated by colonel lawrence's beduin irregulars, in World War I? Do you remember that, oleg? and as for the traditions of Ukraine, the murder and rape of helpless jews by cossacks comes first and foremost to my mind, oleg! now there's a proud tradition for ya, right, oleg?
81. @Matt1234 Are all your comments so poorly researched?
Fairness4All ,   London   (09.12.11)
Or just the last few? Turkey is overwhelmingly Sunni. Shia's rule? Hilarious. If you want to think Turkey is being guided by another Islamic country - well this time you're right. But it's Saudi Arabia NOT Iran - and Saudi is overwhelmingly....wait for it....Sunni. Thank you and have a nice day.
82. to Alfred Germany
martine ,   Israel   (09.12.11)
Alfred, you're doing wrong, we don't need him, he's the worst President the States ever had, and not only for us. Don't you know that the only One you've to pray like you're doing is G-D! Don't you know that He's The Only one in the World that will help us. Obama is a pet in Princes of Oil's hands and he's muslim. He's somewhere laughing cause that's exactly what he was looking for since the first day he entered in the Politic games. He's looking forward to see the destruction of Israel. Too bad for him, The Master of the World has other plans, and I'm not sure he'll like his. No one can hurt Israel without enduring some damages. This is to say Alfred, just stop crying after Obama's help, he won't do it and we don't want him to do it.
83. 65
zionist forever   (09.12.11)
Unless they have invented some kind of super weapon I would love to know how the Turkish warships are going to disable the weapons on a ship that carries anti ship missiles, a missile defense system and deck guns. They would have to sink the ship if they wanted to disable all its weapons.
84. Israel vs. Turkey
mb   (09.12.11)
So Turkey as the 4th, 5th or 6th largest/strongest army in the world. Is it any more of a threat than the combined forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon plus expeditionary forces from Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Kuwait, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and the PLO? Because that's who picked a fight with Israel in the past, and lost. For Israel, a conflict with Turkey would be, simply put, a turkey shoot.
85. Joe #20 you are right
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (09.12.11)
No have no military experience and have no idea what you are talking about. The Israeli Navy is small but very technology heavy. Our Sa'ar V vessels have about the same firepower as a US missile cruiser, the 4.5s and 4s equal to a missile destroyer. Our submarines are some of the most advanced non-nuclear subs in the world. The Turkish Navy consists mainly of cast off American and European designs that were out dated 30 years ago. Our air force is over twice the size of Turkey's and it would be within easy distance of our air fields. The Turkish Navy would not survive more than an hour.
86. Neutralizing Turks
SteveR ,   Dallas USA   (09.12.11)
The Turks have a below replacement birthrate. The Kurds have twice as many children. Turkey will neutralize itself long term. Short term they have an enormous current account deficit. Goldman Sachs thinks they will be in recession this year. Erdogan is frustrated by both and Israel is a convenient diversion.
87. My reply to an article in "Today's Zaman
Avi K ,   NYC USA   (09.12.11)
In this news item, you’ve referred to a “report,” but you’ve neglected to tell us where it came from and how reliable you feel it is, so let me continue with the assumption that it is indeed a reliable one. If so, it is now even clearer in my mind that your current leadership would end up leading Turkey to a national suicide. Is your leadership serious and thinking clearly? Are they really planning to try and break what the UN has declared to be a legal naval blockade? What about the word legal don’t they get? And please, don’t tell me that Turkey rejects the findings of the Palmer report and that it is therefore null and void, you can’t do that, that is NOT legal. And if God forbid you’d really send those war ships in order to try and break the Legal blockade, you should expect the consequences to be devastating for Turkey’s national interests. Not only that you’d manage by doing so to start a war with Israel, (a very bad move if you ask me), but you’d also seriously risk the chance of being thrown out of the NATO alliance, damage your relations with several countries around the world, (The US comes to mind), and who knows what else would come out of this insane move, but nothing good, that’s for sure. But oh, wait, I almost forgot, your leadership does not seem to care much about any of that, but rather, they’re totally consumed with only one goal lately, finding a way (and fast) with which, in their distorted logic, they’d bring Turkey back to its glory days and become the new leader of the Islamic world. But please allow me to give you, the Turkish people some free advice: Stop your insane leaders before it’s too late. I’m not going to tell you how, that’s an internal matter for you to figure out, but please, do something before it’s too late. And oh yes, if you do decide to send your navy after all, please, please, make sure that every sailor wears a life vest, and that it should have enough life boats for all on board, and oh yes, perhaps, a few intense Hebrew lessons before they sail wouldn’t be such a bad idea either for the survivors of this insane journey…
88. "fairness for all" matt, london
ira berkowitz ,   emeryville, cal. usa   (09.12.11)
here's some fairness for you matt. arabs keep on attacking israel and israel fights back and teaches arabs a lesson. it's only fair, matt. and, oh, by the way, matt: egypt started the 1967 war. egypt blockaded israel's red sea port of eilat, mart, and THAT"S an act of war, by the same standards of international law thatr cuyte little grouips like yours always cite, matt! have a ni8ce day67, matt! i can't wait until your own liberal relativism bites you in your liberal rear end, matt! better give up the vegetarianism matt, and grow a mpair, and get a little bit of common sense!
89. 80 (Ira)
Fairness4All ,   London   (09.12.11)
Nor is an American (or Israeli) especially qualified to be the honest broker in that argument either. Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Back of the line to you Ira, and you Oleg, and ya, me too.
90. Read before you spout
Beauchard   (09.12.11)
Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty: "The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area." Everybody read it? Now if Turkey is a member of NATO and there is a military confrontation: Gaza is not in North America or Europe and the security of the North Atlantic area is not in danger. So stop spouting nonsense about NATO attacking Israel.
