1. Thank you for this article.
Karen Katz ,   Shoham   (10.08.11)
Thank you Mr. Gerstenfeld for always stating the uncomfortable truth. May you have a happy New Year.
2. Jewish convert?
Yehudi europi ,   France   (10.08.11)
What's wrong with a UK court defending a Jewish religious convert? How can this be "anti-Semitic"?
3. Is there any doubt
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (10.08.11)
that circumcision is a painful and damaging ritual? I don't see any anti-semitism. Do you believe in creation? So does circumcision mean that God made something wrong?
4. Tune in to FM radio thats,....EFF EMM!
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (10.08.11)
Europeans? Fruits and Nuts on the Left coast of the US, in the Peoples Democratic Socialist State of California (at the edge of total bankruptcy)? Who cares about there opinion of jews, or Jewish practices. they are self limiting and heading towards their own particular form of extinction. Wave Bye Bye to them. Holland? Bengium, France? Soon not to exist by their own havd and lack of seriousness as a state. The Jewish people will sit and snicker at these shoe scrapings as they sink into oblivion. Jews will make this yet another *MINOR* footnote in their long and documented history.
5. an insidious expression of Christian intent
Arn ,   Yehud, Israel   (10.08.11)
The Christian world has tried everything from expulsion to genocide to rid itself of the Jews. This is just another, and perhaps more insidious expression of its intent. If they can get the Jews to do without circumcision they effectively fix a wedge between the Jews and their original covenant with God - the very covenant that establishes their identity as Jews - no matter where in the world they are born. An uncircumcised Jew is an oxymoron.
6. It's time for medieval practices to pack and get off....
Gregg ,   Haifa, IL   (10.08.11)
Religion and its practices are so passe.
7. it is most important to many
orit ,   ashdod   (10.08.11)
religios people. it is considered healthy by many doctors. i don't see why it can't be left alone
8. To: No. 3
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.08.11)
Excuse me, but did anyone as for an anti-Semitic opinion? No. Didn't think so. That means you need to shut up. By the way -- circumcision represents G-d's covenant with the Jews. If you want potenhtially to die of penile cancer, feel free to stay uncircumsized. Ick.
9. Good article that presents facts withou bias!
michael redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (10.08.11)
10. #2 - the Supreme Court decided .. reread the article!
michael redbourn ,   arad israel   (10.08.11)
11. The article ended with "it is muslims foult" lol
Jamu ,   London   (10.09.11)
Didi he said ,,,"Islam copied many Jewish customs with some changes"? That must be original. He could not say, these religions came from the same source "God" and each prophet confirmed the one previous. Then again, if he confirm that....he is a muslim then,...which is why he claims the copy-cat claim...to escape.
12. Sarah B, USA
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (10.09.11)
So means that God made a bad job if you need to repair it?
13. To No. 8
David Davidson ,   USA   (10.09.11)
So by your logic, all newborn girls should have their breasts cut off because they could get breast cancer later.
14. #12 jarda
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.09.11)
Research has shown that circumcision prevents disease, including penile cancer. It should be the parents' choice, not your choice.
15. Perfection
Adam   (10.09.11)
Jarda, As anyone can see, the world is not perfect. Ask someone dying of cancer. Jews believe that God gave humankind the responsibility to perfect the world that God created. Circumcision is the symbol of this. That is why it is on the 8th day. Why don't you join the effort instead generating hate?
16. WAS EUROPE EVER HOSPITABLE TO JEWS? NO SURPRISE
David ,   NJUSA   (10.09.11)
17. Christians and seculars in the western world
marc   (10.09.11)
gave up circumcising boys in the second half of the 20th century. They were acting on the advice of doctors not antisemites. Its ineviteable that secular Jews will follow suit. Countries like Australia , Canada and NZ have gone from newborn male circumcision rates of 95% to rates of 0% nowadfays. To argue that the trend is driven by antisemitism is not only dishonest. It is laughable. If you can find any adult male who would volunteer to have his foreskin lopped off to prove that its just a useless piece of skin, I'll change my views. Good luck with that
18. it IS a painful and damaging ritual
(10.09.11)
at least have the honesty to admit that the doctors are right and that the call to discourage circumcision is not, in itself evidence of antisemitism. You are arguing in favor of the parents right to cut off part of a childs penis in order to ''appease the gods''. Isnt there a tiny part of you anywhere that realizes the absurdity of your stand?
19. To: No. 12
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.09.11)
If you want to pick a fight with circumcision, why not go with the repulsive Arab and Moslem practice of female circumcision? Or is it just not attractive enough a subject for you as it does not involve being critical of Jews?
20. Jarda #12
Maurice ,   Montreal   (10.09.11)
Do you let your fingernails grow? I guess not. Does that mean God's design of the fingernails was imperfect? Enough said!
21. Reply: Is there any doubt
Israel ,   Israel   (10.09.11)
I don't know... Why don't you go ask the baby? No, I'll be serious with you. Firstly, the baby gets a tiny drop of wine (a drop, nothing close to getting drunk!) to ease the pain. Secondly, the mohel is highly experienced and knows what he's doing, Thirdly, you're not chopping the thing off. It's a very small cut in Judaism. Very small. Especially on a baby's thing which is even smaller. Fourthly, right after the cut, the baby is treated to medicine and bandages and taken out of the room to be treated and be left with the mother. Fifthly, the baby will never remember it. Sixthly, studies indicate that around 8 days old (when Jews do it), there are health benefits. A healthier baby. True, any baby can be healthy - but the chances are greater. As for your question about it not being perfect what G-d created... The whole point is a convenant, a promise, between Jews and G-d, demonstrated by their willingness to do this. Muslims do it for the same reason - except at age 13, when Yishmael (Abraham's other son, and whose descendants were Arabs) did it. It's what distinguishes us.
22. #8 Sarah B total nonsense
Haim ,   TA   (10.09.11)
Oh im sorry i didnt know you were also a medical expert as well as a flunked lawyer? Please provide the figures of "Penial Cancer" as you so put it that have been caused by not circumsing babies. Circumcision is nothing but mutualting a baby for some barbaric medevil religious belief.
23. No covenant between Hashem and the Jews
Devorah   (10.09.11)
has to be defended. Period. You don't like it? Too bad.
24. Jew is by culture first and also history, but not religion.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.09.11)
Religion is seen by some as synonymous with culture because 200 years ago everyone was religious. But today many people don't want to have anything to do with Jewish religion while they continue to respect and belong to the Jewish culture. Personally, regarding religion, I think Buddhism is way smarter than Judaism, but I practice none. To me, circumcision is barbaric ritual. totally unnecessary, but should be freely available to anyone in a hospital if they want to pay for it. So, am I attacking Judaism, is Judaism under attack from me? If someone thinks so, he/she has a chip on the shoulder and the sooner they drop the chip the better for everybody. Of course the old, orthodox Judaism is under attack from modernity and correctly so. This is the main reason why Jewish orthodoxy has no chance in comparison to Reform Judaism and other modern streams.
25. Sarah B, USA # 19
Jarda ,   Czech Republic   (10.09.11)
I consider both as a relict of history which lost its sense now.
26. A snarling debate over circumcision?
Cameron ,   USA   (10.09.11)
Ugh! Definitely too much information! Uncomfortable topic. Lets talk about something else like smuggler tunnels or rocket barrages, eh?
27. Anybody who thinks Christianity
Paul ,   Jerusalem   (10.09.11)
in Europe was the problem. Not exactly. No matter what belief system is driving Europe, the inner core of Europeans are inherently opposed to anyone and anything Jewish. This reality cannot change. In 'Natural Law', we as humans are good at observing 'Natural Law' in animals, we however fail to acknowledge that it is Natural law - the inability of Jews and non-Jews to co-exist. The Biblical story of Esau and Jacob is the revelation and origins of this reality.
28. To Michael, #24
Daniel ,   New York, NY   (10.09.11)
Actually, Orthodox Judaism is the only stream that continues to rise in number, while reform Judaism attracts one generation, then loses their children as they tend to intermarry, killing off whatever Jewish traditions/culture was left in them. A reform Rabbi recently wrote an article in the forward, explaining how reform judaism is a mistake.
29. I see no problem with banning male genital mutilation
Chris   (10.09.11)
until the age of 16 when the person whose penis it is can make an informed choice about the procedure
30. Circumcision-dumbest talkbacks ever
Sharona ,   Jerusalem ISRAEL   (10.09.11)
There is a higher chance of penile cancer in uncircumcised men. Not a big one but still out there. You idiots all ignore that it IS proven that circumcision helps prevent the spread of AIDS and Israeli doctors have been sent to Africa to teach doctors there how to do it by international health organizations!! Smegma is also gross. Anyway don't worry-if the practice is banned the Muslims will burn down Europe.
