The official name of the Red Cross is and has been the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. The Israeli Red Star of David was denied membership in the ICRCRC for decades because the ICRCRC wouldn't allow "religious symbols" - unless, obviously, they were a cross or crescent. I have for decades refused to donate to the Red Cross (and let's call it what it is: the ICRCRC) for their officially antisemitic policies. They haven't really changed...

Going back to the origin of the red cross, this would have been horrifying for him to see the after effects of the war. During the war, people slayed and wounded each other without mercy in a massively bloody fashion. And it was said that the horses were much more compassionate than the people involved because they tried not to step on the wounded victims. Not even the leaders had control of the war anymore, it had developed a life of it's own, as wars always do. So after coming accross this massively bloody scene, he helped the victims. He was able to organize the townspeople and he put up money and convinced the people that it didn't matter who was on what side, because all are brothers. He continued on with the general idea. In later life though, he kind of was shunned and poverty stricken as often happens. With the nobel peace prize it was somewhat controversial because people were unsure of the idea of cleaning up after a war instead of leaving it in it's natural state, because they were worried that war might be more attractive that way. So it was divided between him and a man named Passy, a pacifist.

The Red Cross was not even good to the US servicemen in WW2. My dad served in the US Navy and used to tell us that The Red Cross always charged the men for even a cup of coffee so they used to go to the Salvation Army which welvcomed them with open arms and treted them like the heroes they were. My dad and we after him do not donate anything to the Red Cross even though they do good at times. Even when they are praised for helping folks who lost everything in fires they get reimbursed by the Welfare Depts. I know b ecause I as the caseworker for the Dept. was often the one who had to write out the request for reimbursement.
