31. If saying "Come Home" is offensive to somebody, then I don't
tom ,   tel aviv   (12.05.11)
want him home!
32. American Jewery
Christian Chan ,   Singapore   (12.05.11)
The good Jews have left the USA and are in Israel! The USA Jews are mostly foolish leftists!
33. It is no sin to want to stay Israeli
Daniel   (12.05.11)
This add isn't saying that America is not a place for a proper Jew. It is trying to say that if you will move to America your family won't be able to stay Isreli. My cousins moved to Boston 10 years ago. Today their young children talk to them in English at home. If anyone would of asked them 10 years ago if that would be the situation in their homes, they would of said no way. And despite all their tries to speek hebrew at home they still speek English. The add is showing a real situation that hapens to almost every Israeli family that moves to America. So why is it offensive to American Jews. Is it a problem saying that we hope to stay Israelis? Is it a sin to say that we want them to return?
34. Very good post #2
Keren ,   IL-BR   (12.05.11)
This guy,Goldberg,is short sighted and has a junk mind. His comments are foolish-to say the least.
35. American Jewry
Anshel ,   Toronto, Canada   (12.05.11)
Perhaps Mr. Goldberg should move to Canada. Our Jewish community is smaller than the American, however it is noted even by Alan Dershowitz that it is one of the best known to be connected to Israel (translation: less liberal and more practical, not seeing the world though lenses of a sometimes arrogant superpower). Canadian Jewry was in recent years rewarded for its loyalty (and less arrogance to criticize the Israeli government) by a prime minister (Stephen Harper), whose support of Israel is second to none. Time for the US Jews to learn lesson from their northern brethren. As far the adds, they were correct, who needs so called Chanukah bush in their homes?
36. #5: Couldn't agree with you more!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (12.05.11)
People have the right to decide where and how they want to live. If Israelis or other Jews want to live in the USA, Australia, South Africa, the UK and Europe it is their choice to make and not that of the Israeli Government. On the other hand, it would be wrong not to encourage Aliyah and this is done by various Zionist Organizations all over the world under the guidance of the Jewish Agency and financed by the Israeli Government. Unfortunately, Antisemitism has become rampant in many countries where it was once dormant and were ostensibly "Jew Friendly". Jews in these countries are quite aware of what is going on around them and the ease which the Muslims are winning the propaganda war against Israel and how Jews are being blamed, once again, for the woes of the world. So, if Jews in the Diaspora chose to close their eyes to this, well that's their right.
37. Assimilation can happen here in Israel!
Father ,   Israel   (12.05.11)
I know. My kid met a non-Jewish girl here in Israel, married her out of Israel and has now left the country. He too, served in the IDF! People hve the right to chose so stop telling others what to do, both here and abroad. Israel has enough problems at home to worry about those who have left on THEIR OWN FREE WILL!
38. Nr 11.
Sweden. ,   Sweden.   (12.05.11)
I Quote - Also if the Israeli government want's it's expats to turn then it should lower its outrageous taxes and encourage employers to raise salaries because the majority of Israeli move to the States for economic reasons sheik rattle & roll , USA (12.05.11) Comment - I see that You dont know anything about economy and how it functions. Go to the US for economical reasons is to F- k Oneself, within a wery short time this will be seen. On the other hand Israels economy will prosper, this will also be seen in a wery short times. By !. Arn.Sweden.
39. The term american jew
john ,   Beverly Hills, CA   (12.05.11)
Thats a big word, most sane people in the usa, jew or not, see israel as a growing country with a smart energized youth, many new innovations can be credited to israel and hence the huge jealousy. Its not the american jew, but rather within the american jews there are those self hating jews, those people are always problems and they should never be addressed.
40. The truth hurts!
(12.05.11)
First of all, the ads are aimed at Israelis only and they tell the truth. So many children of yordim assimilate and intermarry. I don't know if it is at the rate that American Jews do, but it is still a problem. Latest reports show that nowadays about 80% of young American Jews who are getting married marry non-Jews. At least in Israel most of the non-religious still marry Jews. This is because they are surrounded by mostly other Jews. Secular Jews in the US and other countries are mostly surrounded by non-Jews: at school, at work, in the neighborhood, etc., so it is only natural that they should socialize with them and eventually marry them. So the American Jews who are complaining about these ads should deal with their own problems (assimilation and intermarriage) before attacking us.
41. Intermarriage
SB   (12.05.11)
Many of my American friends here in Israel tell me that back in the States, most of their friends and relatives have intermarried and almost none raise their children as Jews, even if they are halachically so. Soon only the Orthodox will be Jewish - probably in only another two generations or so. This is a fact and anyone who denies it is totally blind. Even the so-called "Jewish leaders" mostly have intermarried kids and non-Jewish grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The future of our People is in only one place: ISRAEL.
42. We have large Irish and Italian populations
Sidney ,   USA   (12.05.11)
But nobody asks them to come home. They are both Americanized and retain an attachment to their ancestral home. Jews are going the same way. Only a small percentage of Jews here are old enough to remember World War II or the prewar anti-Semitism here. Universities with Jewish quotas in the thirties had Jewish presidents in the fifties. The real problem leading to indifference to Israel and assimilation is that Judaism is an unattractive religion, especially considering the behavior of the orthodox here and in Israel. In an age where almost every Jew is a college graduate, you cannot sell myths disproved by historians and archeologists. Once there is no real difference in religious belief between peoples, assimilation is inevitable. The good news is that a large number of Americans have a family connection with Jews and they tend to be better supporters of Israel than liberal New York Jews.
43. The post at No. 3 is not mine
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.05.11)
44. There's only 1SRAEL.
V.Gambini ,   nyc   (12.05.11)
Why pretend? Come visit, come live, stop pretending. Be real, do it for your kids. 1SRAEL the best place for kids in the world.
45. Is American Jewry Loosing Itself ?
WakeUpCallToUSJews ,   Jerusalem Israel   (12.05.11)
Perhaps the question should be is American Jewry losing itself to nearly total assimilation relgious and culturally? Although still at the moment an important Jewish community history has seen such communities dissapear in the past i.e the great Jewish community of Alexandria among many examples sadly. The ball is squarely in the court of American Jews as to which direction they will take.
46. prob is not the assimilation of the jews, prob is the non-as
eporue ,   europe   (12.05.11)
ssimilation of the religion... sidney in 42 is right... what the religions today do, is something like "selling unattractive stuff"... the true and problematic rift is between the religion and the real world, not between american and israeli lifestyle... this is true for all religions today... they miss, refuse to adjust to the real world... but its - apart from all god believe - the major task of religion to connect to the people of their time, to approach and support them in their way of life... religion must be flexible to survive... it doesnt mean giving it up, but it has to have a connection to the world as it is, and not trying to adjust the world to their rules from stone age (as the ultra-orthodox or haredim try to do)...
47. So ridiculous
Deborah ,   U.S.   (12.05.11)
This is nonsense. Most American Jews don't care about the ads and are not offended. We will always support Israel!
48. they would loose nothing
Larry ,   Los Angeles   (12.05.11)
People in USA know what is really happening with Israelis who stay in America. if they are not religious, their children become typical Americans with no connection to Israel or anything much Jewish. The parents get little satisfaction from living there except their paycheck and they always wish that they were back in Israel.
49. Goldberg the "expert"
Chaim   (12.05.11)
As one who reads the Atlantic, I can say that Goldberg is usually way off. See his article a few years ago saying how great Prime Minister Olmert was and how he was going to lead us to peace...........
50. Nr 3 and 43.
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (12.05.11)
Now as I experience it, we have come to the point that, Nr 43 can be the impostor, because the post at Nr 3 can very vell be the Genuine Sarah. I think its time for Ynets News and the Genuine Sarah to come to an Agreement which Computor Sarah will use, and block every other with Her signature Arn.Sweden.
51. not so!
oded   (12.05.11)
yes, we may have lost or lose the "left wing, j-treet jewery in amrica. as far as i'm concerened- good riddence. most amrican jews' alliance with israel is unbreakable ,non negotiable. the author is wrong in assuming a mass exudos away from israel and its interest by most or all amrican jews. those who were not for israel to begin with, will remain as such, and in fact ,i'm glad we ""lost " them.
52. assimilation
marcia lewis ,   fort lauderdale fl   (12.05.11)
Israelis here in the US keep the culture of Israel alive and well here. Hebrew is spoken. businesses, eateries and clubds all promote American awareness of our beautiful little homeland. liberal American Jews have no inte3rest in Israel nor do they care to llearn what life is about in our moledet. but the Jewish zionist, albeit a dying breed, will come to live in Israel a lot quicker then an expat Israeli. trust me on this!!
53. What is all the fuss about?
Mitchell Cohen ,   Gush-Etzion, Israel   (12.05.11)
Well, I made aliyah 17 years ago, served in the IDF (am still in the reserves; could have been discharged last year due to my age but volunteered to keep doing miluim until they stop letting me), and both my children were born and are being raised here. So, I think I have no less of an understanding of "both sides" then Goldberg. And I don't see what all the fuss is about!!!! The only ad I can see being offensive is the one with the couple (American man/Israeli woman), but the rest of the ads, come on?!?! What is so offensive about trying to encourage Israelis to come back to their native country? Is it not true that Jews in the diaspora are assimilating? Please, grow up!!!!
54. #2 Istvan in Hungary
robert   (12.05.11)
and that is why YOU are in Hungary?
55. #3 Sarah- missing the point
Rachel   (12.05.11)
you are missing the point- supporting form the US is one thing, but moving to Israel is another- read the article, Dear. Not everybody has the choice to move back and forth between the 2 countries like you- for most people it would be either or....
56. Tragedy
Batya ,   Israel   (12.05.11)
We know several Israelis who went to the US years ago and who are not religious. Every one of them has at least one child who has married a non-Jew. They all did well financially but are now crying that they should never have left Israel because here they would have had Jewish grandchildren. When they come for relatives' weddings, they are jealous because the couples here are both Jewish and the future babies will be Jewish.
57. #3 too disjointed for Sarah B
M Carr ,   Baltimore   (12.05.11)
and contains none of her expected sharp-edged wit...Obviously a fake.
58. Returning Israelis-Goldberg
Rich ,   Miami USA   (12.05.11)
I think the Israeli PR material was excellent but at the same time embarrassing to the US Jewish leadership. The paradigm that all Jews belong Israeli must shift because it is in Israel's interest to have a strong US Jewish Community. At the same time, the US Jewish Community is exposed to increasing assimilation as a result of acceptance into mainstream American life. Thus US Jewish Leadership must solve the assimilation issue -and they are embarrassed that their efforts have not been successful to date.
59. goldberg easily appalled by Israel; by others, not so much
rick ,   walniut creek   (12.05.11)
fool. insignificant twit has a forum and he uses it to share his usually senseless, sometimes moronic, observations. waste of time. he's a fool. so much so that he cannot begin to understand that he is.
60. Rube Goldberg
Nachlieli ,   Gush etzion,Israel   (12.05.11)
Goldberg is to be commended for his time serving in the army & Kibbutz here but once you leave you don't really have a say in matters.I moved to Israel 42 years ago by myself as a teenager went into the army for 3 years before I'd been here a year. After 8 years here I was 1 year in america temporarily & realized that what I had done was done. When you "vote with your feet" by moving to the USA you are saying "I will enjoy its benefits, pay its dues".By us living here we help promise a home for any Jew who wants to come here be he 33 or 83 G-D knows with the taxes & military debt we pay.Goldberg welcome home PLEASE.
