32. what about direct elections of Knesset members?
Michael   (01.10.12)
33. What about the handicapped?
Sidney ,   USA   (01.10.12)
Would a Jewish Stephen Hawking be excluded?
34. Transform the Haredim
Glen ,   New York, USA   (01.10.12)
While people consider this bill racist against Arabs, I think the group that people often overlook is the Haredim. They take, take, take, and give almost nothing back to society. It really is a shame they get to benefit from a country that they contribute nothing to. I think this bill is long overdue, and will hopefully transform the ultra-religious into a productive part of society, instead of the drain they currently are.
35. #14 - Correction now that I have read his bio more closely.
Henry from New York ,   USA   (01.10.12)
It said that Lieberman served as a corporal in the Artillery Corps, so I apologise.
36. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES!! ,   Israel   (01.10.12)
Somebody is starting to make sense. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
37. At the very LEAST, all must sign a loyalty oath
Israel forever ,   Zion   (01.10.12)
It is absolute insanity to have people in the government that hate Israel and do everything possible to distroy it from the inside This ABSOLUTE INSANITY MUST BE STOPPED
38. He could sign an oath of loyalty
Israel forever ,   Zion   (01.10.12)
It is the intent of this much needed revision to allow only dedicted loyal citizens to serve, not Jew hating, Israel hating Arabs
39. I vehemently oppose this bill
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.10.12)
Now, in order to avoid "misunderstanding" since many of my countrymen have a never failing "talent" of "misunderstanding" absolutely everything and blowing things out of proportion and raising their voices over nothing I need to be clear. So I'll be clear: Yes, I am an ethnic Jew/Israeli, I wasn't born in Israel (unfortunately), I love Israel, and I am an Israeli patriot and a nationalist, and I would even consider myself to be very conservative and right wing. If I say that I vehemently reject any Arab presence in Israel, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Golan, I reject "land for peace", I want all Arabs of Eretz Israel out, I want a reconquest of Sinai and I support a military strike against Iran, I want to keep Judaism as our state religon, and I support privatization, low taxes, strong defense, increased police presence on Israel's streets, good healthcare and an elite education at schools, high schools, colleges and universities - then just maybe you'll understand where I stand politically. I agree with Avigdor Lieberman that one must be unequivocally loyal to and supportive of the democratic Jewish State of Israel, and that one needs to take an oath of loyalty to the Jewish State of Israel- I agree - no disagreement on that point. But what about olim hadashim? What about those who moved to Israel and were too old for military service? What about those hundreds of thousands of young and highly educated Zionist diaspora Jews that have spent most of their lives studying? Should they be punished in the diaspora for being Jewish and then being punished and discriminated against a SECOND TIME in Israel because they weren't born here and didn't do the army service? That will scare many diaspora Jews away from Israel since they would feel they are second class citizens Israel. If olim hadashim won't have the same rights here in Israel, why would they bother to come here? This is complete madness. Serving in the IDF doesn't make you a good MK - Dayan, Rabin, Barak and Sharon come to mind.
40. #23 Not a dilema
A ,   Belgium   (01.10.12)
I'm sure a person like your son who, in spite of his disability wanted to honorably and faithfully serve his country, would be allowed to become a Knesset member. Physical disabilities and the desire to serve should be special qualifications. Parasites such as arabs (Beduin, Druze and other minorities excluded, of course) who give nothing to the state, and haredim who serve IF they feel the IDF suits their religious belliefs, could be allowed "observer" status in the Knesset but nothing more.
41. #25 mychal - agreed
solomon ,   bklyn   (01.10.12)
Also: Israel is declaring itself both Jewish and democratic, While I believe this declaration is not a direct contradiction, passing Lieberman’s bill will show this is not Israel’s true situation. No longer will Israel be able to call itself democratic, thereby undermining much of it’s defense against international detractors.
42. Undemocratic
(01.10.12)
In a democracy the only prequisite for serving the public is to be of the age of majority.
43. IDF Sanhedrin
Geoffrey Patterson ,   New York; U.S.A   (01.10.12)
The best idea in the last ten years. U.S should do likewise.
44. 39
zionist forever   (01.10.12)
Relax This is just Liberman making mischief. He knows there chances of a bill like this passing are less than zero, this is just traditional Liberman.
45. finally!
Jacob ,   Israel   (01.10.12)
Great idea! Those who don't give back to the state should have no say in how it operates!
46. A serious bill?
Cameron ,   USA   (01.10.12)
What are the odds it would pass? The Arabs & Haredi must be hopping up and down around it.
47. 23
zionist forever   (01.10.12)
I am sure Liberman never even intended this bill to be taken seriously but if such a bill were to be passed then it would need to take into account medical exemptions and there would have to be civilian national service programs for arabs & hardi in place.
48. Only those who served in the I.D.F.
jason white ,   afula,israel   (01.10.12)
should be allowed to vote or work in the civil service. The same goes for child allowances and drivers licenses for private vehicles.
49. Excellent!
Phoenix ,   Israel   (01.10.12)
That's a way to stop all the parasitic enemies and traitors to enter our parlament.
50. Patriotism and loving Israel - YES. Worshipping the State..
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.10.12)
...Authorities and existing in this world for the sole purpose of "serving" one's country - NO. I'm not exactly a Left Winger but this bill is sick to the core. I usually agree with Lieberman but not this time. The prevalent "ideology" of the State authorities and among many of my countrymen, is that one seems to exist in this world for the sole purpose of "serving" one's country, one's army and one's flag. The problem with this life philosophy is that one doesn't live, but lives for someone else - that one's individual existence is devoid of meaning - one is being reduced to a cog in a cogwheel machinery of society - politicians, the IDF, the police, the rabbis, the family, the school, the neighbors etc telling you how you should be. Anything artificial and that goes against human nature is mentally and emotionally exhausting. When State authorities realize that the State of Israel is not God - one should not worship the Israeli State, but rather one should worship a miracle called life/existence, then the State will soon realize that the spirit of Israel is its people - the Jewish/Israeli people, and that the State is just a legal/political machine without a soul. Instead of reducing one's fellow Jews/Israelis in Israel and abroad to "servants" or cogs in a cogwheel machinery of society, Israel should realize what Jews/Israelis are - namely thinking and feeling human beings with hopes, dreams and ambitions, then just maybe will our expats return home and just maybe will many more young highly educated Zionist Jews from around the world take the big decision of moving here. The "ideology" of serving one's country has to stop once and for all. End this state worship - this is sick. Do you want to worship? Worship God or Life. Do you want to serve? Serve your Jewish fellow human beings and non Jews as well. In every western democracy - Australia, Canada, USA and Western European states, this is completely unheard of - this notion of existing in this world for the sole purpose of serving one's country, flag and army. The right to serve in the Knesset is as important to me as voting rights.
51. Jewish activists
zivron   (01.10.12)
You cannot exclude political activists not suited to open conflict like Peres who helped enormously to protect eretz yisroel with weaponry whatever his many faults , Eshkol was not a soldier but helped provide the organization for victory in the sixday war which established with the war of independance justice for the jews visa vi islam for islamic bystander sympathy for nazi treatment of the jews.Big question did avigdor liberman serve in a combat unit of the idf or natan sharansky or chaika grossman or abe kovner.
52. To: No. 33
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.10.12)
No, he would not be excluded -- he could do national service. Quite a few handicapped Israelis do precisely that, because military service or national service are the entrees to full participation in Israeli society. The number of industries in which people who do not serve in the military or perform national service are excluded -- necessarily -- from employment is staggering. On the other hand, it is absolutely outrageous that someone such as Anat Kam could pursue a Knesset seat. She should be dishonorably discharged retroactively.
53. To: No. 15
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.10.12)
Ha ha ha yourself. Please keep in mind that Ms. Michaeli responded to extremely insulting comments. That said, had you forgotten that M/K Hanan Zoabi once physically assaulted a Knesset security who attempted to escort Ms. Zoabi outside following her screaming temper tantrum directed at another Knesset member? Why no comment from you about that disgraceful and disgusting episode? Had you forgotten that M/K Tibi openly flouted Israeli law (as did MK Zoabi) by traveling to Libya, a country which is off-limits to Israelis? And let us not forget M/K Zoabi's little adventure aboard the MAVI MARMARA. Are Tibi and Zoabi your idea of "role models?"
54. DON'T CREATE PROBLEMS
BEN JABO   (01.10.12)
Arabs have served in the IDF since 1948, we can make space for as many as want to enlist, AFTER they taken loyalty oath & served the State as every citizen should
55. MK Leiberman just went up in my estimation
meghan ,   israel   (01.10.12)
anything to get Tibi out of our Knesset....I am sure he will find a place in the Hamas government, he and his like. If a person who hasnt served in the IDF has a problem with a mortgage or driving licence, why should those that havent served be a MK!!!
56. Well meant, yet undemocratic. Needed: INTEGRITY&VISION!
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (01.10.12)
57. #22 Eretz Yisrael meant for Am Yisrael. Zionism is for jews.
Jerry ,   The Netherlands   (01.10.12)
58. Didn't Stanley Fisher to become MK after his term?
Mordo Kaye ,   Roma   (01.10.12)
59. MKs
Jez ,   Netanya   (01.10.12)
Arabs, Haredim and Immigrants who arrived here over the age of about 26 will be disqualified. Why not take the vote away from them too . Sounds the kind of bill that would be welcome in Syria, Eygpt, Saudi Arabia..................
60. To nr 45, 48 and 55
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (01.11.12)
Look, I'm not crazy about the Arabs either, and just like you I vehemently oppose Arabs and Jew haters "serving" as MKs. To make you understand what I mean: I want the Arabs out of Israel, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Golan, I oppose "land for peace", I want Judea, Samaria and Gaza to be annexed once and for all, I support a reconquest of Sinai and a military strike against Iran. I too want Israel's enemies OUT of the Knesset but you don't have to use a shotgun to kill a fly. This bill would exclude olim hadashim as well. Is it "patriotic" to exclude your Jewish brothers and sisters from the diaspora? Many of them - probably hundreds of thousands of young men and women are usually well educated, Zionist and love Israel. Should they be punished and discriminated against in France, UK, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway only because they are Jewish, and then to be discriminated and punished a SECOND TIME by you people? In your "patriotic" obsession of serving your country you have a feverish desire to discriminate Jews from galut. I'm telling you - you are creating tensions within the Jewish people. You cannot discrminate Jews from diaspora and turn them into second class citizens. We need as many Jews - well educated and Zionist Jews in Israel as possible. We have enough enemies outside of Israel (Arabs, Turks, Iranians, Europeans and Russians) and within Israel (Arabs and Left Wing self hating Jews in Meretz and Labor). Don't make your loyal brothers and sisters your enemies. Trust me when I say this: Many Jews from the diaspora will not come, Israel will become less democratic, people will feel trapped in being "servants" of this insane state worship, and you'll keep tourists, business people, academic people and scientists away from Israel. Dayan, Rabin, Barak and Sharon all served the IDF. Rabin, Barak and Sharon were terrible PMs. How do you account for that?
