1. A hero
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (01.25.12)
With all due respect, the only thing Daniel Pearl achieved was dying. Everyone loves such Jewish heroes: "wow, they died with dignity". For me he is not a hero, just another one of millions of Jews who died like sheep. You want real heros? Avigdor Kahalani who faced down more than 1000 Syrian tanks at Emek Habacha, destroying 300. The paratroopers including Yaki Haimovitch who liberated Ammunition Hill, killing 70 Jordanian troops. Roee Klein who killed 5 terrorists near Shchem and later gave his life saving his soldiers at Bint Jbeil. Yoni Netanyahu who in a heroic career was wounded in battle, killed terrorists and Syrian troops, risked his life to save wounded soldiers and gave his life at Entebbe when he and his soldiers killed 7 terrorists and about 40 Ugandan soldiers.
2. Pearl belongs to' the Jewish saints
Marty ,   Ny   (01.25.12)
3. To # 1 - israel israeli
Abu Yussef al Yahudi ,   Bue_Aires_Argentina   (01.25.12)
Jewish Brother, in this particular case I will dissent strongly from your statements. - IMHO Daniel Pearl ZL", was really a HERO, because despite the hard conditions that he has supported, NEITHER he negates her Jewish and Zionist ancestry, NOR, being an American Citizen, abjured for his ideas of Freedom and Democracy Moreover, he had borne with BRAVERY the harsh times and humilliations previous to his inhumane assassination by these barbarians Muslim Jihadists, that are the trash of the Mankind. Dear Daniel Pearl, of Holy Memory, surely your brave soul is now near the Glory of The Creator of the Universe, blessed be His Holy Name. AM ISRAEL CHAI
4. Daniel Pearl a Hero ?
Steve Goodman ,   Israel   (01.25.12)
Not a hero, just another Jew murdered because he was Jewish...a Martyr yes, a hero no....a brave man yes, a hero no....dying without cursing his captors, a Jewish soul yes, a hero no.
5. WELL DONE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
RAPHAEL ROTHSTEIN ,   PALM BEACH   (01.25.12)
Giulio Meotti thank you for this article and to Ynet
6. Daniel Pearl, z.l.
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.25.12)
G-d bless you, Daniel, and all who sail in you. We have not forgotten you, and we never will. Neither will we ever forget the depraved rabble that caused your merciless death. They are marked for destruction. Please rest in eternal peace.
7. DAN PEARL
moron ,   GALUT   (01.25.12)
A terrible end..there is no good from looking at it as if jews are heros when they get slaughtered--better he lived to 120 and uneventful!
8. remembering
Nahum ,   TLV   (01.25.12)
This article keeps high and strong the memory of Pearl and other victims of judeophobia
9. To Steve Goodman and "Israel Israeli"
Ehud   (01.25.12)
If you were abducted by ruthless terrorists (and this is always a possibility), and do not plead for your life by denying Judaism, Zionism, and Israel, but - knowing you will face brutal death with certainty if you do so - stay by who you are, a proud Jew, then you would also be a hero. As it is you are only stupid and insensitive.
10. an excellent article.
sue ,   israel   (01.25.12)
11. Danny
michael Pielet ,   israel   (01.25.12)
Danny's only connection to Judaism was that he was born a Jew. He never served in the Israeli army, he married a gentile, his child is a gentile. He was not a zionist. He admitted to being a Jew only under coercion from his murderers. Of course he died a Jew. Danny was incredibly naive, to think that muslim murderers would ignore his Jewish background. Hero, no, all the Jewish heroes fought as Jews against our enemies.
12. #1 and #4 Yes, he WAS a hero!
Maurice ,   Montreal   (01.25.12)
He was a hero not just because he was proud to declare himself as Jew in spite of death threats, but also because he had the courage to go and work and do dangerous research on Jihadist grounds like Pakistan. Before you put down this courageous man, I want to see you two going to Pakistan and investigate Al-Kaida circles!
13. Every Jew should think strongly about and do not
Yoav ,   Germany   (01.25.12)
forget, we are at war, so be warrior and not "peace" activist!
14. Tragedy of Intermarriage
Joshua Cohen ,   New York, NY USA   (01.25.12)
Daniel Pearl was descended from a family with roots in the Polish Chasidic world. His only progeny though -- a son born a few months after his death -- is a gentile. So, as proud of a Jew as he may have been, by marrying a gentile woman (a practicing Buddhist no less) he brought to a dead-end his illustrious Jewish heritage. Such is a Jewish "hero" only to others who are similarly inclined to self-extinction through assimilation and intermarriage. "Am Yisrael Chai" indeed...but not, (tragically) in the Pearl family.
15. Good point #1 but you must admit that
Israeli 2   (01.25.12)
the author Mr. Giulio Meotti wrote a very good article. He knows and remembers more than many of us who have easily forgotten. I personally like Mr. Meotti's articles.
16. Giulio Meotti - i love your articles - you are my hero!
Mossyboy ,   London   (01.25.12)
17. He has dignity but I dont think he is a heroe
NATAN ,   ISRAEL   (01.25.12)
He never denied his roots and were he comes from towsands of unknow jews died that way. A hero for me is who give his life for the others or take one of the enemies with him before he was murder. Daniel Perl Z,L. was a man with al the respect of a gentelman but I cant say he was an heroe, is a disonor for real heroes than give there lives to protect others. Nothing to do in the same status of Ron Arad.
18. to No 14
NATAN ,   ISRAEL   (01.25.12)
So I am not agree in intermarriage, but do you mean a jewish who asimilate desrve to die?
19. Hero?
Avi ,   Nyc   (01.25.12)
He may have been a martyr, but how was he any more heroic than Edith Stein?
20. Shimon Peres and Barak....
Shalom ,   U.S.A.   (01.25.12)
They should be reading this article!
21. Hero Kahilani
Ben Ze'ev ,   Panama City panama   (01.25.12)
Your kahilani information is very "loose". I don't he wasn't a hero. I myself have a cousin who was there with Kahilani driving a troop carrier. It would be more correct to say that Kahilani was the commander of the group which went up to the Golan in a hurry and stayed there untl alost the end, when finally re-inforced. very man who went there was a hero.
22. His mother was Jewish Iraqi from Baghdad
Sami ,   New York, USA   (01.25.12)
His mother was Jewish Iraqi from Baghdad.
23. One of the many victims of Islamic Terror
Froike ,   NY NY   (01.25.12)
It doesn't matter how you label Mr. Pearl, ZTL.....He was one of the many Jews killed al Kiddush Hashem. May the animals that killed him burn forever in the lowest levels of Sheol,
24. DANIEL PEARL WAS A VICTIM
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (01.25.12)
An unfortunate victim .A hero ? I am not so sure ,maybe he was and maybe he was not .A hero would have spat in the face of his tormentors and cursed them.
25. #15
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (01.25.12)
Meotti writes excellent articles, and kol hakavod for reminding people of Pearl. But without forgetting anyone, be it Pearl, the Six Million, London 1189, Kishinev 1903 or Hebron 1928, I prefer to raise my children on the values of Kahalani, Har-Zion, Yoni Netanyahu and Klein.
26. Thank You Mr. Meotti for reminding us of our challenges
Moshe ,   Usa   (01.25.12)
27. Daniel Pearl was not a hero but is remembered with sorrow.
Arnold ,   Canada   (01.25.12)
Daniel Pearl had his throat slit and bled to death simply because he was born a Jew and had the terrible luck to get kidnapped.
28. Not everyone who is killed by terrorists is a hero.
Max Merbaum ,   Los Angeles   (01.25.12)
He was supposed to have a been a great guy, but there's a certain lack of prudence present when a Jew goes gallivanting around rural Pakistan. A big stretch.
29. A Hero?
Chaim ,   Los Angeles   (01.25.12)
I think it is commendable that Daniel Pearl admitted to being a Jew in the last moments before death. Of course he faced the lowest of the low. The worst monster criminals in the world. One cannot ignore the fact that he did however marry a French Buddhist. Would a proud Jew do this? Such a shame. How was he going to pass on his Jewishness to his children? Don't you know that children take after the religion of the mother in most cases?
30. #14 ignorant and hateful post
Avramele   (01.25.12)
For the Nazis that child would be Jew enough and the hundreds of thousands of Olim of mixed parentage are part of MY people and our destiny. Racial definitions of Jewishness died For many of us at aushwitz.
