From your talkbacks, I can see an Anders Breivik moment.

Sam ,   Boston, MA   (02.17.12)
The Orthodox accuse the Reform and Conservative movements of being Christian. Seems to me they have decided to become the Taliban. Ever since the earliest days Jews have split on their interpretation of the Torah. Any group that claims divine interpretation is incorrect. The Orthodox can claim their interpretation is correct but it's just a claim, one that 75% of the world's Jews reject. If you want to live like the Taliban, go ahead, just don't force me to do it also.

Beauty in the Reform movement? What's the beauty? That it has nothing to do with Judaism?

44. Its the irreligious left that is giving Israel a bad name
American Sabrah ,   Israel   (02.18.12)
Israel is suppose to be a Jewish state; not governed by atheistic Bolsheviks who wants the country to regress to the Soviet Union. They are responsible for all the problems we face in this country. They've brought nothing but poverty and corruption. But this fallacy for a Rabbi would rather attack the true practitioners of Judaism instead. I am religious but I don't recognize "Conservative" Judaism as being legitimate. Their practices are clearly in violation to what Judaism preaches. Its one thing not to be religious. Its another thing to practice religion in a matter that transgresses the original teachings of the Torah? Does this woman keep kosher outside of her home? Does she observe Sabbath? Does she practice Taharat Mishpacha (laws of family purity)? I highly doubt it. What right does she have to call herself a Rabbi if she is so dismissive towards matters that are required of her in Judaism?
45. "can't be a NON Jew in Israel" more correct
yoni the jew ,   jewish homeland   (02.18.12)
The author gives an example in the article as to why you cant be a Jew in Israel going on to explain the importance of civil non Jewish marriages. This is typical conservative and reform Judaism destroying Jewish law and lifestyle and then blaming the other side for doing so. Conservative and Reform Judaism is not wanted in Israel since it is a made up form of Judaism. All Jews are welcome home but please leave the BS in the exile.
46. Conservative SATNDUP!!!!
David ,   Quito ecuador   (02.19.12)
This woman (not rabbi), is right, and she should lead the charge and go to all the Orthodox neighborhoods wearing her Tales to confront the orthodox... As a matter of fact all women who think like her should go and confront Haredim. Lets see what happens then...
47. Julia Schonfeld
Ed Codish ,   Pardessiya   (02.19.12)
I have long wondered about the unrestrained emotional attacks on writers such as Eichner. There is real hate in them. Hate is generally caused by repulsion combined with fear, and I think that the fear here is interesting. One of its indications is the refusal of most rightists to sign their names. Many of the posters here must know that Jews such as Rabbi Schonfeld are smarter, better educated and wealthier than they are, more cultured and more honored in the general educated population. That is, they are led to suspect that in any intellectual or historical struggle with people such as Rabbi Schonfeld they would lose. They cannot join Rabbi Schonfeld; they lack the education. Therefore they hate and oppose her. These comments are generally applicable to the range of left versus right issues in Israel and in the world.
48. #47: Ed Codish
Israeli 2   (02.19.12)
You truly write with the conviction of a man with a serious inferiority complex. Smarter and more educated? For sure not. Wealthier? What has that to do with anything? So is the Pope. A smart and educated Jew knows to first and foremost be humble. You seem to parade with your nose in the air for naught.

Ed Codish ,   Pardessiya   (02.19.12)
Again, an anonymous attack from who knows where. I wrote not about myself but about the right wing posters here. Careful and repeated studies show that less intelligent people grasp the simple answers of the right. (Intelligent people themselves may be left or right, but judging for the language and thought here exhibited, intelligent right wingers don't post here.) Deal with the cowardice; it's important. It is fascinating that conservatives calling for strong action in strong language hide so that they will not be called upon personally to do anything. Yes, I am somewhat proud of my knowledge and education, and this may be a flaw, but it seems better to me than all those people who are proud of their simplicity.
50. Unfortunately, Schonfeld's biases cause her to miss the mark
Meir ,   Israel   (02.19.12)
There's a lot to say on this topic. Unfortunately, Schonfeld's biases cause her to miss the mark, by a long shot!

S Judah ,   Jerusalem   (02.19.12)
Looking at this as a Sephardi/Mizrahi, this whole thing is a bit of a sad joke and alien to us. Unless I am mistaken a Sephardi congregations adher to orthodoxy, with the congregants encompasing those who are Ultra Haradi to those who keep very little of the mitzvot. And even the person who keeps very little doesn't want to go around changing the rules. What is it with all this, liberal, refom, consertive thing? What great sages gave authority to change things and on what basis?

"Many of the posters here must know that Jews such as Rabbi Schonfeld are smarter, better educated and wealthier than they are," Ed, there is something you should know: Teen aged Yeshiva students have more Torah education than conservative clergy. Yes, teen aged Yeshiva students have more Torah education than conservative clergy And if you're still confused, teen aged Yeshiva students have more Torah education than conservative clergy
54. the rabbi is 100% right!
nadav ,   tlv   (02.19.12)
As a non-Orthodox Israeli to whom Judaism is important in my life and has deep meaning, I am horrified that fellow Israeli care more about Islam being hijacked by fanatic lunatics than the highjacking of Israel by extremist fanatics! As for the Haredim - what are Haredim afraid of if they had to share the budget withe Reform and Conservative Judaism? I see no other solution other than the separation of religion from state.
55. S Judah #52
Ed Codish ,   Pardessiya   (02.19.12)
Yes, you do ask an important question, but you answer it yourself. As you say, some members of Sephardi "keep very little of the mitzvot." They do not seem to need any sage's authority to do this. They may not "want to go around changing the rules" but they in fact do so. This is a bit dishonest, no? I believe with Plato that everyone does what he or she considers right. Personally, I do accept the mitzvot, but have for some time stopped calling myself Orthodox, Conservative or Reform. I have met very observant Jews who called themselves Conservative , and some very slack Jews who called themselves Orthodox. I do not think these terms mean much.

nospam   (02.20.12)
Claiming to be "conservative" this lady should have consider following traditional, conservative values, for example advocating Rabbinical instead of attorney self serving civil divorces, not following Obama radical communist agenda. This lady may call herself a conservative, but she sounds like a typical "progressive" feminist to me advocating a movement that has brought it "results" in assimilation and elderly abandonment rates unheard of in the past. 50% intermarriage and 38% abandonment the last time I checked.
58. Wrong again RBS
Michael Alex ,   NY USA   (02.20.12)
I'm Israeli and American and lived in TLV for 4 years. There is no choice - so Israeli's choose to be secular. They call themselves traditional - but sitting at home on Yom Kippur, fasting and watching movies is NOT a tradition. Well, it is now thanks to the stranglehold of the "religious".
59. Have 10 more babies

60. I don't know why, but here goes............
avrohom bilgrei ,   Zion   (02.22.12)
For well over 5000 years Judaism has flourished, survived, and prospered beyond all humanities expectation because of Torah. Conservatives have disregarded elements of that specific blueprint and have denied G-d's authorship of Torah (even Christians don't). They represent a single digit percentage of the pie slice of history of their people alive today AND assimilation is destroying any and all offspring they spawn to the extent of over 50% marrying out and destroying any authentic remnant of their heritage, as such; in addition to common Torah ignorance among them, retain no viable moral authority; inclusive of their "rabbi's"! Therein lies the REASON "they are not wanted in Israel". It's pretty self evident to anyone that values facts. Who would want a self extinguishing heritage?
