The 2002 Peace Initiative has a few flaws and Israel was right to demand changes to the document, which Arabs REFUSED to do. Israel did indeed talk to Arab States which is how the Geneva Initiative came about, sponsored by Sari Nusseibeh and Yossi Beilin. 1) By demanding 1967 lines, it creates a very precarious situation regarding security of Israel and would not disincentivize any group from attacking Israel in the future should they decide to refuse the agreement. Do you really think if Syria decides to attack Israel after signing this agreement, Arab States would come to Israel's rescue? Hardly - and we both know that. 2) The document ONLY held Islamic States to the agreement and not non-State entities which include PRC, Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Hizbullah, Al-Qaeda and others. That means nothing would have changed - terrorists would still attack Israel but Arab States would not, but again, Arabs would not act in Israel's defense under such an attack. 3) The "Palestinians" themselves have rejected this agreement and made even more demands, such as forcing Israel to accept 5 million hostile "Palestinian" refugees. Without the explicit agreement from the "Palestinians", it doesn't matter what other Islamic States agree to. And without Israel, it doesn't matter what the UN decrees or Arabs demand. And Israel has learned too many times that Arab agreements are often worth less than the paper they are on, as was proven by Arafat and the Oslo Accords.

I agree with you that political imagination is needed. Normally I would agree both sides should make this concerted effort. But so far, every effort by Israel is seen by the arabs as weakness. It's their turn, if for no other reason than to show they are willing to compromise and ALSO to show that they are willing to live with a Jewish state in the region. There are limits to the compromises you can expect from one side when the other has shown none, but still wants to kill you.

The tragic thing is the Fogels were not asleep when they were murdered. According to court documents,the little boys were held down, and were crying and begging for their lives,when they got stabbed. The parents fought in vain for their lives,only to be stabbed and shot to death. The baby woke up and was crying in her crib when she was knifed to death. If only they had been asleep,the crime would have still been horrific and unbearably heartbreaking,but it might have taken the sting out of the pain and shock just a little. The same thing happened with these recent murders in France, the sicko murderer actually said he got extreme pleasure out of executing poor little Miriam.
