61. #5: I didn't hear an outcry when Israelis buses exploded
an Israeli   (06.10.12)
Sorry, But we Israelis intend to defend ourselves. I lied in Jerusalem when every other day a Palestinian suicide bombers exploded himself in an Israeli bus killing children, women, old people, men. That was of course before the security wall, before the checkpoints. I didn't hear then an outcry from Berlin. The security wall stopped the terror attacks. Sorry that we defend ourselves...
62. #12, #14, #15, #19 and the others like them!
an israeli   (06.10.12)
I wonder what's with the fixation ion Israel? Are there more atrocities in the world? Israel is the ONLY monster country? Because that's what it is, isn't it? we're not talking about legitimate criticism. We're talking about portraying Israel as some sort of devil or evil country that torture and persecute poor Palestinians. We're talking about a one side media coverage. We're talking about not reporting missiles sent from Gaza that explode near a kindergarten in Sderot, but reporting Israeli retaliation as some sort of cruel monstrous barbarism. We're talking about portraying the security wall as a second Berlin Wall without mentioning the fact that almost 1 thousand Israelis were killed in the second Intifadah when there was no wall and the Palestinian terrorists could walk freely into Israel and kill innocent people.
63. #40: I bet you never thought what is like to be blown up
an Israeli   (06.10.12)
Your ability to identify with human suffering touched me deeply. I suggest that you try to thing what's it like to travel to work on a bus, or sit with your children in a coffee shop and being blown up by a Palestinian suicide bomber. Here's an an exercise in humanity for you.
64. #48 definition
solomon ,   bklyn   (06.10.12)
Being born of a mother does NOT make it an "ethnicity". Converts to Judaism are supposed to be accepted as equal. The fact that they may not be is a question of people, not the law. Israel may be a theocracy, but a democratic one in which other religions are protected. Therefore, it is NOT like Iran. The US gains by Israel training our troops in close in combat, sharing improvements in our equipment, and sharing intelligence that is difficult for it to get, impossible for us. Your post seems very selective...

solomon ,   bklyn   (06.10.12)
Thanks. I'll look it up. Where do Jews from India fit in? And Yemeni Jews are not included. Maybe we can say that most, but not all Jews are ethnically related.

Don't know what word replacement you were trying there, but it was a great attempt :) while i have nothing but the utmost reverance for the 6 million and others who have been murdered, including the palestinians, don't forget u have got billions in reparations and managed to create a state by grabbing land. its high time to stop playing the eternal victim
68. #33 I do absolutely not get your point
Isac   (06.10.12)
This article is about anti-semitism in Europe and Germany in particular and not about some theoretical opinion of yours. We are talking about real facts and not what you think maybe right. The matter of the fact is starting with first the the racial policy in Germany, and later the Nuremberg laws under which German Jews were deprived of CITIZEN'S rights. As a further fact, in WW II there were numerous German Jews who served in the German army as highly decorated officers. The point is, that there is no indication of anybody's religious affiliation in any Western hemisphere issued government document. Under western democracies and not under a religious point of view there is no connection whatsoever between somebody's nationality and somebody's religion and that is good so.

Moshe of Rockville ,   Rockville,MD USA   (06.10.12)
Recheck the word replacement.I am confident you'll understand. Whatever reparations hvae been obtained by the Jewish survivors and the Jewish communities of Europe is nothing compared to the loss of one-third of the Jewish population of the world!
70. # 32. I wish Israel had a constitution
Charlie ,   Tel Aviv   (06.10.12)
Like the American one where someone like Obama can come along and trash it? Big government can dictate what you can or can't do with or without a constitution if the courts are bent that way.
71. #33 does not infringe on the national character or traditio
Charlie ,   Tel Aviv   (06.10.12)
Yes like the Christians of America are having their religious traditions squashed be it by the ACLU or or political groups. Traditions going back to the 1700s and written in the constitution. Now one cannot wish another a Merry Christmas without infringing on some Secular right.

Charlie ,   Tel Aviv   (06.10.12)
Land grabbing? Maybe you should hone up on the history of the region going back to the dying days of the Ottoman Empire, the wars the Arabs started against the fledgeling state that led to a loss of land. Oh those terrible Jews had to win those wars instead of lying down to be killed as Gandhi suggested they do during the Second World War. Well the Western world sure helped with the decision at Evian and then Britain locking the Jews of Europe in for Hitler to round up.

Moshe of Rockville ,   Rockville,MD USA   (06.10.12)
The so-called billions of reparations and "grabbing the land" along with "playing the eternal victim" is a product of your anti-Jewish and anti-Israel attitude. The historical connection of the Jews to the land of Israel was established at least 4000 years ago. The continuous presence of Jews began at least 3000 years ago and has continued since then, despite having been conquered by Babylonia,Persia,Geece, Rome, the Byzantine Empire, and the spread of Christianity and Islam, the latter by the sword.

What i was trying to explain is nations are formed by the subjective feelings of 'likeness'which bind people to the extent that they feel that they are a distinct nation. What I explained in my previous post is generally accepted in International law as forming nations. In any event if religion or being a part of a religious group gives a large number of people the the feeling that they are a distinct nation, then they are a distinct nation. Unlike States, Nations need not be recognized by other nations. It is a subjective binding of a group which sets them apart as a unique nation. This is what happened with the Palestinians. They created a nation where there was none before because they feel they have certain factors which bind them together as a nation. As I said earlier both Greece and Denmark regard religion as a binding factor for their nationalism. Even France is actually called 'The Catholic Republic of France'. Jewishness is the factor which binds the Jewish people as a distinct nation. The Nazis ideology and definition of Jews are not those which Jews need to accept. The fact that a few Jews fought with the Nazis, by denying they were Jews does not detract but proves the point. The Jewish people themselves have created the Jewish nation. This is not theoretical but it is so. Nations choose that which binds them, whether religion or anything else. In fact, most of the states in Europe were formed out of the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. States were formed on the basis of Catholicism or Protestantism. Read any history of Europe.

Moshe of Rockville ,   Rockville,MD USA   (06.10.12)
The Balfour Declaration, League of Nations and the United Nations officially recognized the historical connection of the Jews to the present day land of Israel. Unfortunately, the hatred expressed by the Koran and Hadith towards Jews was in conflict with the reality of history and the Jewish Bible. Your ignorance regarding this subject does not persuade you from expressing your misguided opinions. Get to the nearest library and do some reading.
76. Bonded
Avi   (06.10.12)
Jews and Germans are bonded in shackles of the past, the unsuccessful attempt to rid themselves with their nemesis left them with the ruins of their futile attempt for posterity, so many were deaf mute and blind to what went on so that even in the aftermath when they returned home no one stepped forward to accept blame, this ritual seems to repeat itself again, here and now…
77. #61 So read the news of the intifada times
berlonski ,   berlin   (06.10.12)
... and you will find again and again outcries not just of province mayors in Germany but of all leading figures of German politics. Remember Foreign Minister Fischer on his visit to Israel when this horrible suicide attack on the TLV beach club happened? B.t.w. I am in general PRO the security barriers. But automatically labelling people with a different opinion as anti-semitic is just absurd. It kills any political debate.
78. #1 Peter as always reads and
Volker ,   Germany   (06.10.12)
What he likes to read but never what is actually written in the article. On the other hand one has to understand that the essence of the article is just too sophisticated for him. As narrow minded as he is this article is way to complicated to get for this kind of people
79. #59; Steve B, AND LOGIC???
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (06.10.12)
So because you conversation with one "Israeli" businessman in Thailand, your conclusion was "all" Israeli Jewish people must be like this, therefore, rightfully deserve the hatred (antisemitism) they get from Germany and around the world? Interesting. I guess you think; G-d spelled backwards is Dog, is some kind of revelation! Later Dude.
80. #73 Do you know how to read English?@#!
Isac   (06.10.12)
Where in my comment #68 did you read something about land grabbing and the "eternal victim"? What is your beef, buddy? Beside, I consider myself to a certain point a defender of the zionistic idea.
81. #74 First, I misspoke when
Isac   (06.10.12)
I mentioned WW II instead of WW I. For obvious reasons there were no Jews allowed in the German Wehrmacht. Second, my point is, that if in a German passport of today, one would state "Goldberg's" religion as Jewish, there would be quite an outcry. Forget a moment about history. We are living in a new world which has nothing to do anymore with the world of Christian conquerers, the ancient Roman, Greek, French maritime or British empire. As a fact of today, there is the separation of church and state. The word CONSTITUTION?! Got it? THIS ARTICLE IS MAINLY ABOUT GERMANY AND IT'S PAST!!!!!
82. do not worry people
Max ,   istanbul, turkey   (06.10.12)
Germany has no problem providing Israel with Dolphin submarines (5 and 6 on the way), just as here in Turkey business with Israel is at an all time high. Remember that actions speak louder than words and that tacit approval goes a long way.
83. #75 Moshe
Jassi ,   New Delhi, India   (06.10.12)
Your response is typical of israelis. When you can't take criticism, you tend to create a make believe world where who so ever criticises israel is an anti-semite, is ignorant and is an idiot. Sadly, that isn't the case. And please spare me all the religious baloney - historical connect, promised land, lost tribes, wanderings etc. while i completely emphathise with the pain of the jewish people and the need to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, can't we move on instead of resurrecting the anti-semite boogeyman every now and then? I wish nothing but the best for the jews and a continued and prosperous existence.
84. #57 split
solomon ,   bklyn   (06.10.12)
"the rest of" is the same as "all the world", "everyone"; a statement of wishful thinking that you are correct because "everyone" agrees with you. It is as much a statement of garbage as your posts. If the arabs would put down their arms, there would be peace. If Israel would put down its arms it would be overrun. Period. If you call that crap, you are free to do so. The problem is that your post is crap. All too typical.

Mickey ,   Sydney, Australia   (06.10.12)
A 'Constitution' does not necessarily mean that anything will change. Britain does not have a Constitution at all. Many countries that do have Constitutions include religion in the document. A Passport denotes citizenship of a 'State; not membership of a nationality. It was you that concluded in your post #9 to Peter that being Jewish is not a nationality. It is in fact a nationality but does not indicate citizenship of a state.. Statehood and nationality are not necessarily the same thing.
86. #65
Alex   (06.10.12)
There are different Indian Jewish communities, some direct paternal DNA lineages (Y-chromosome) in Cochin Jews have been matched to Jewish ones, although overall they're predominantly Indian of origin. While the Paradesi Jews are a mix of settled Sephardic Jews and local Cochin. Indeed, Yemenite Jews mostly descend from converted Yemenites, but it would be faulty to call them "Arab Jews" since this happened before the invention of Islam and due to the long isolation from Yemenite Muslims they're genetically distinct from them.

solomon ,   bklyn   (06.10.12)
Thank you for your wishes for a continued and prosperous existence. Theoretically, you are correct in that whoever criticizes Israel is not necessarily an anti-semite. However the opposite seems to be the norm these days. You will be able to tell if you open your eyes and ears and listen for the telltale "innocuous" inclusion of the word "Jew" in lieu of "Israeli". Your conclusion is not the reality. Many defend the arabs “right” to the land by historical references but deny this same mode of discussion/argument to the Jews. The Balfour Declaration, League of Nations actions, etc, are not biblical history, but modern history. Fact: The League of Nations and United Nations officially recognize the historical connection of the Jews to the present day land of Israel. You may not like the facts. But they are very relevant.
88. #1...Peter...That was the intent...until Israel
Edithann ,   USA   (06.10.12)
got into trouble with their new neighbors as has always been their ancient custom .. They expected Israel to answer their dreams of cheap labor and a chushy life for all Jews.. all built on European Reparations and American Tax Payer money..But alas, that dream has turned out to be wanting...and so Israeli's are wanting to return to their old 'sod'...and Europe is beside itself with the same old and ancient problems after 65+ years.. AS we've all noticed, their progress of creating more and more anti-Semitism for themselves is alive and well.... TATA
89. 1- I will be happy
k ,   US   (06.10.12)
When Germany and Austria pay for what they have done, that is when I will be happy
90. #88
Mickey ,   Sydney, Australia   (06.11.12)
Israel's economy is doing fantastically well and she was not affected by the GFC. German reparations ended a couple of decades ago. The aid which Israel gets from the US is not even 2% of Israel's GDP. The reason why the US gives this military aid to Israel is that it serves US interests as Israel provides technological upgrades for that equipment and provides intelligence that the US cannot get from elsewhere as has been admitted by the Pentagon.
