31. the on who starts wars, he looses land
Valdi ,   Germany   (06.22.12)
Israel should irreversibly keep the Golan's and announce ahead, that if some one starts a war yet again, there will be no return of land. Further more - the one who starts a war to destroy the Jewish nation, will be completely devastated. Best
32. Scaremonger he is not
Greg ,   Washington, DC   (06.22.12)
Michael from Haifa goes ad hominem against the author of the article without bringing a single reasonable argument. To the well-presented case, for the lack of rebuttal ideas he answers: "or the author is just a "little man"". I think this reply proves more than anything who is right.
33. #4 - You're a moron.

I was in Israel during the war and your logic defies my imagination. I knew people who were killed or wounded in the war. If Israel had kepted the Sinai or least a large part of it Israel would have had deterance and Israel would have had a better position in the world. But because some present and past Israeli and Egyptian leaders were paid off or blackmailed we are in a far more dangerous position now. There is a lot you don't know what happened that most Israelis would be shocked if it was became known. Now I afraid because of appeasement a new war is brewing.
35. Outdated article. Egypt's army in now in control ;-)
michael redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (06.22.12)
Erdogan imprisoned most of Turkey's generals and thereby overcame Ataturk's wonderful legacy. The brotherhood however wasn't able to do that in Egypt, so the world now thankfully has Mubarak's heir to the throne.
36. To nr 26
Alexander ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (06.22.12)
It is not too late and Sinai does not belong to Egypt since it has used Sinai in wars of aggression and doesn't honor our peace treaty. The solution is very simple (yes yes, all anti-Semites and all Lefties are free to call me "racist" or "Fascist" or whatever - I don't really care. I know I'm right and nothing will change my mind): Israel should expel all Arabs (yes all of them) from Israel, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Gaza, Golan and Sinai and annex Judea, Samaria, Gaza and Sinai and flatten Egypt, Syria and the Arab world to the ground because that's the only way to put a permanent end to the farce called the Arab-Israeli conflict. You can't have a conflict if the enemy is wiped out completely. And to all Lefties and anti-Semites: Noooo, I will not apologize, and yeees, I do think that flattening Israel's neighbors to the ground or obliterating them is the only answer. And nooo, I will not compromise one iota about my opinion. The only compromise I can agree to is how fast Israel's enemies are going to die. No shame, no regrets. Wipe out the enemies of Israel. I'll quote Chuck Norris in one of his movies as a response to the Arab world and Iran: "It's time to die."

You miss my point. 34 years of peace/no war/quiet (call it what you will) resulted in no Israeli deaths due to war. What you think should be done now has no bearing on my statement. If nothing else, Egypt has a history of sending terrorists into Israeli territory (fedayen). Syria did not do this. But for 34 years, neither did Egypt. Surely the saving of Israeli/Jewish lives is worth something.

42. Thank Jimmy Carter!
AMERICAN HINDU ,   USA   (06.23.12)
Why did Jimmy Carter promise the Egyptians billions of dollars in military aid, after Israel gave them back the Sinai? Which nation did they want to arm themselves against? Now these billions of dollars of weapons could likely be used against Israel. Just as the Ayatollahs got American weapons from the Shah's arsenal, the Brotherhood will get these tanks and guns and planes!

47. To #9-Are U Volunteering 2 Go Fight On The Front Lines?
Arnaldo Araujo ,   Belo H.,MinasGerais,   (06.23.12)
It's easy for an 'armchair patriot' to simply say "Israel must re-capture Sinai" when it is not your skin or your blood that is to be sacrificed on the line in order to accomplish this grandiose scheme... Why don't you VOLUNTEER to serve in the I.D.F. and YOU GO THERE to the border of egypt & YOU SET THE EXAMPLE FOR EVERYONE!
48. #122 Barry, You are 100 % correct. Begin was wise.
Michael ,   California, USA   (06.22.12)
He trusted Sadat and it has paid off as you enumerate. On the other hand, the occupation of the West Bank is not paying off. Defending the Barlev Line cost Israel many lives of soldiers. It was like this also after South Lebanon was occupied, and in Gaza and Yesha later on. Territorial gains are often touted as good for security, but that has not been the case of Israel. Israel did much better within its old border lines from before June 1967. Begin was wise when he tried to uphold a viable and secure Israel.
49. The Border With Syria
progressoverpeace ,   Philadelphia, USA   (06.23.12)
has been quieter than the Sinai border all these years - something that all the land-for-peace people refuse to acknowledge as they crow about how great it was to give away such an important and strategic piece of land.
50. SINAI INFILTRATED>>>>??
deborah lurya   (06.23.12)
when will we learn not to do business with the enemy, one that is our eternal enemy especially. Sinai is infiltrated and should be taken back. 30 years of cold peace and this is the payoff- a real shame.

54. "Israel’s Sinai catastrophe". While you see a problem ...
leo ,   usa   (06.23.12)
... one can see an opportunity. If war is inevitable you might as well use it to your advantage and take Sinai back and relocate Gaza 25 miles to the south just in case Sinai will have to be returned one day.

60. Historian?
eldar ,   Haifa   (06.23.12)
This type of article is why Hagai Segel is a populist journalist and not a serious scholar - historiography of the worst kind - looking at the present (which included 30 years of unforeseeable events) and drawing a deterministic line from the past to the present. What a populist yellow journalist.
