(1) The aircraft in question was an unarmed TuAF RF-4E Phantom reconnaissance aircraft. (2) The aircraft was on a Recce mission above Turkey's territorial waters (Hatay province to be precise) against PKK infiltration's into Turkey. Usually, Recon. Aircraft are escorted by TuAF F-16's which have SEAD capabilities. However, because the aircraft was considered to be not in danger in Turkish Airspace there were no F-16 escorts this time. (3) The aircraft sustained fire from Russian made anti-aircraft units on the Syrian side of the border. (4) The pilots immediately alerted NATO Allied Air Command Izmir (AC Izmir) and the TuAF Command. The aircraft then spiraled into Syrian territorial waters only after it was shot down. (5) Turkey went on Full military alert. The Turkish PM's plane was diverted from Athens to Ankara. The PM had just left Brazil at the time. (6) US assets from Incirlik AF base and Turkish Naval assets were dispatched to the scene of the crash. (7) All TuAF combat aircraft were loaded and still remain on full alert.
