31. Matt: "The new US export"
Daniel ,   Tel Aviv   (10.05.12)
Sadly you're too right. People seem to be mimicking what they see Americans do. Canada has had serial killers and mass shootings recently. Now an American in Israel. It's only a matter of time before American gang violence and illegal guns are all over the world. America has certainly exported the concept already

I find the opposite with media, in this article they are quick to note that he is a Jewish man, while in other articles, you have to read the name and interpret whether they were Muslim or Christian. There seems to be a bias with purposely leaving out the religion if they are not Jewish, but quick to state it if they are, just like with the Mohammad video where all the media was very quick to say the person who created it was an Israeli, funded by rich Jews. Terrorism is also not just defined by terrorizing, it is actually defined as having a political purpose. Shooting people out of anger for losing a job or being offended is not by definition terrorism.
33. Sorry to break it to you, folks, BUT
Moshino ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.05.12)
unfortunately this is really not just an American phenomenon. I remember when I made Aliyah about 10 years ago, one of the first articles I read in the paper is that an Argentinian immigrant had set fire to an employee of one of these government agencies. Can't remember which one. Then some time later, it was a Russian guy who stabbed someone from the Employment agency. And every now and then you see similar tragedies. Bottom line is some people are really not built for the toughness of this country. Really sad news for Sukkot. Hashem Yrachem Aleinu! We need not only socio-economic changes in this country, but also socio-behavioral changes!

I think you mean "funds," you slimy cretin.

Is leftist Israeli culture any better? Threatening to jump off an overpass? Stopping traffic? Staging sit-ins against deportation of illegal aliens? Refusing to serve in the IDF? The miscreants to which you refer represent but a tiny fraction of American youth. And, to date, none of them have been Jewish. Please shut up until you get your facts straight.

Since the article makes it very clear that the gunman was, indeed, Jewish, yours is a sucker's bet. Duh.
38. No US culture, just US money$$$$$$$$$$$$

Idiot, it was announced as soon as they found out who was behind it. "The gunman was identified as William Hershkowitz, 24, a Jewish man from New York City, who arrived in Israel as part of the "Oranim" Israeli-American work exchange project."

I agree with you, the Western/American democratic aspects we should value but we should not seek to import the decadent part of Western culture. Personally having lived in Scandinavia, that's much worse than the US, people have no respect for eachother and don't care. But in Israel you can still find that "old" warm feeling of community where people care of eachother.
41. Has Obama apologized yet like he does to muslim terrorists?
Dan ,   Los Angeles USA   (10.05.12)
America must pay for this crime

If you are average it's no wonder we are so screwed up.

Ellen ,   Israel/USA   (10.05.12)
Unfortunately the US doesn't "export" its' culture. In most instances Israelis "import it" I live 40% of the time in Israel. Years ago it would take years for something American to end up in Israel. Today with the internet, 1 cent a minute phone calls, skype etc. it easily migrates over. I agree there IS too much American culture in Israel and Israel has lost so much. So many day to day things that made Israel special are gone. However, this horrible act is obviously the act of a sick mind. There are sick minds all over the world.
44. Imports and exports
Chris ,   Dallas, America   (10.05.12)
Many folks from the great state of New York and the Big Apple will decry the fact that many weapons come from other states of the US into NYC. Some will even call them "imports," even though Georgia, Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan, New York, are all states within one country: the USA. There is a kind of mentality that It's really not our fault that we have our brand of violence within the City. As I understand it the guy in question was from NYC. It's time that Americans of all sorts, including New Yorkers, come to grips with why folks resort to this way of resolving personal issues, whether at home or abroad. It's not exclusive to my country, by any means; but we shouldn't continue the denial.
45. @16 Gregg
naava ,   jerusalem   (10.05.12)
No, acts of violence for ideological or nationalist reasons are terrorism. Acts of violence because someone was fired from their job is criminal... both are nuts... You must be a visitor in Israel, Gregg, because we usually favor the Arabs in this country, and always they are given the benefit of doubt when there is a question.
46. #2 Matt - Two isn't a mass
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (10.05.12)
What Major Nidal did was Look upwards to Syria, they're killing hundreds each day, that's a mass How would you hav prevented the situation, looked in a Crystal Ball, to see the future? What would YOU have done to prevent it, it's easy to critcize after the act
47. #7 Netanya
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (10.05.12)
He still had a weapon and tachmoshet, why should the police take chance ?
48. ISRAEL HAS VERY STRICT GUN LAWS
BEN JABO (MACHAL) ,   ISRAEL   (10.05.12)
How did he get his hands on a weapon in the first place?
49. One loon does not make a flock
Samantha ,   Tel Aviv   (10.05.12)
As an American who made aliyah three years ago (amazingly I still love both countries) this story is quite clear. A stressed/mentally unstable man gets into an altercation, tempers flare, man grabs weapon starts shooting. Sadly, this happens all over the world and is not simply an export of American gun culture. Any argument to the contrary is completely inflated and naive. Turning this story into anything more than an isolated shooting and examination of how a gunman got ahold of and loaded a security guard's weapon, does absolutely no favors to Israel or the US. Israel should learn to better train these guards and in turn the US can learn how a quick response unit like the Yamam actually works! This is a sad and unfortunate incident, although not completely avoidable, and we should pray for the victim's family.
50. condolences
Ilana   (10.05.12)
Condolences to the family of Armando Abed. May your family never know sorrow again.
51. Now you call him an "American".
Albrecht   (10.05.12)
But the same guy would be an "American Jew", if he would win a Nobel Prize.
52. #22
Madeleine ,   Rehovot Israel   (10.05.12)
Try reading - and understanding - the article. It says the shooter was an American Jewish man from New York city. Just what in that description keeps you wondering what his ethnicity was?
53. Aliyah gone wrong
Cameron ,   USA   (10.05.12)
54. @48 Ben Jabo
naava ,   jerusalem   (10.05.12)
It seems no one is reading the article.. He came into the lobby, got into a fight, the security guard tried to stop the fight, the crazy guy grabbed the security guard's gun and started shooting. It's ALL THERE IN THE ARTICLE.
55. condolences to the family of Armando Abed
naava ,   jerusalem   (10.05.12)
Please know there are many who are deeply saddened for your loss.
56. #51, Yes, that's how it goes
Jake   (10.05.12)
Hence the disingenuous tendency for Germans nowadays to refer to Albert Einstein as a "German" and Adolf Hitler as an "Austrian".
57. To: Cameron at No. 53
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.05.12)
Exchange program, Cameron, not aliyah.
58. Another crazy American!?
Ted   (10.05.12)
Shooting incidences are increasing in America. Gun sales have gone up. Now, they even start shooting oversea. This is terrible.
59. Beni # 20
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (10.05.12)
Hitler had complete gun control. Did that make Germany more stable? Do you think less freedom equates with more stability? Perhaps you would feel more comfortable in North Korea and you wouldn't have to put up with us "unstable Americans."
60. # 31 and # 44
Ellen ,   Is   (10.05.12)
# 31--you write about it only being a matter of time before gang violence and illegal guns are all over the country. I hate to brake your glass bubble but it is already there. Have you looked at reports from Lod, or Netanya--nothing American but there # 44-how easy for you to blame NYC. While in israel it is a whole big America or NYC--guess what, the man involved was NOT from NYC. He was from a small city north of NYC named Poughkeepsie. AND it is a true location, even the local Poughkeepsie paper acknowledges as such.
