61. US Liberal Jews = Assimilated Outmarried Ignoramuses
Tomer ,   Tel Aviv   (10.17.12)
The only good thing about this population is that with 50%outmarriage, 20% no marriage and rampant assimilation they will no longer be around in a generation from now.
62. Ease up, everyone
Naftush ,   Israel   (10.17.12)
Most American Jews *never* signed on to Zionism before Israel and endorsed it only vicariously afterward. The list of issues the author cites as important to them resembles those that Israelis report as most important in polls. If America's and Israel's leaders cause damage to their respective countries, they will have lots of accomplies. Just try not to be among them.
63. "Conservative" has two means
Aharon ,   Galilee   (10.17.12)
Y-man, You are confusing the two meanings of the word "conservative". In a political context - in the US - the word refers to more right-wing positions, like those espoused by some in the Republican party. In the Jewish social/religious context, Conservative is a denomination of Judaism. This poll was referring to the latter. So, in this case, "conservative" is not the opposite of "liberal". It is a destinction from "reform" and "orthodox".
64. Nothing holier about the Western Wall
Aharon ,   Galilee   (10.17.12)
John, The Southern Wall of the Temple Mount is just as holy and historically meaningful as the Western Wall. The Western Wall is designated an Orthodox site, where Orthodox standards are followed. But if you wish to pray in a non-Orthodox manner, you are welcome to do so at the Southern Wall - which is also far less crowded. Also, I think you meant "tefillin" not "tefilah".
65. Rabin was not murdered because of Oslo
Aharon ,   Galilee   (10.17.12)
Arthur, Bibi had nothing to do with Rabin's murder, nor did the settlers or opposition to the Oslo Accords. Yigal and Hagai Amir are from a Haredi family from Herzliya, and I would suggest that you read Haggai Amir's public statements since being released from jail. He is very candid about the reason for killing Rabin. It was because the Amirs wanted a more religious state, and they were frustrated with the secularist direction of Rabin and the Labor party. It had nothing to do with the Oslo Accords. It was all about religion and state. As for those Haredim who don't do army service, it is Ben Gurion who is to blame, not Bibi. In fact, during Bibi's tenure more Haredim have entered the service than in any previous period in Israeli history.
66. #28; Bibi Nethanyahu does not look Orthodox
zipi ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.17.12)
Israel are not run by Orthodox jews. israel is more secular, free and inclusive than most democracies. Israel is a state to be proud off by every Liberal Jew. Israel epitomizes goodness and greatness. 20% of Israel are Arab Moslems and they have all the right of a free swociety and not duties. They do not serve in the army and still are disloyal even though they have better life economically, and are free to speak, worship unlike in other Arab countries.
67. #29Thanks for voting for Romney
Hana ,   Chicago, US   (10.17.12)
Israel needs Romney for its security. Of course there are Liberal Jews who did not forget thier roots and care very much about Israel but we are talking about the sad majority where their liberal agenda is more imporatant than Israel. Many Jews on the right who are Republicans do not agree with every social issue before voting against Obama. Tell your friends and relatives. You set an example!!.
68. liberal Jews
Brian ,   USA   (10.17.12)
"If they come for me today, they come for you tomorrow". American Jews need to remember that-as our freedoms in the US are continually eroded.
69. #67
Rhonda ,   Chicago, USA   (10.17.12)
It was a big deal to me but I had made up my mind that I just don't like the way Obama has treated the Israeli people. Never going to Israel while president but schlepping everywhere else and a whole cadre of things. People can call me an Israel firster, I could care less. On my coat I wear a flag of Israel, a flag of the city of Jerusalem and the symbol of Zahal. I broke my arm recently and now don't know if I'll get there for the 65th in May but I'll try. I love Israel and her delightful people.
70. Obama is as pro-Israel as Romney
besalel ,   Great Neck   (10.17.12)
I am tired of people expecting the American president to be a bigger Zionist than the Israeli PM. I am a staunch Zionist who is against the creation of a Palestinian state and I am pro-Obama. Lets be real: Zionists like Sharon and Bush only brought Israel disasters like the Disengagement and the U.S.'s first public call for a Palestinian state. Bush refused to veto a resolution on the war in Lebanon even though Olmert begged him to. U.S.'s stance towards Israel is an adversarial balance between the Arabist State Department and the Zionist Congress. There is little difference between Obama and Romney when it comes to Israel. We therefore vote for who is best for America, which I believe is Obama.
71. the future is orthodox jews
israeli in the u.s   (10.17.12)
do not give too much attention to reform and conservative . they are declining both in absolute numbers and in percentage of total jews.the future of the u.s jewish community is the orthodox group . this group is clear as to where its voting choice lies
72. Jews in US are first US citizens.
Isaac ,   Weslaco, Texas   (10.17.12)
As a jew living in the US my loyalty goes first to the US, then I try help Israel, but my skin goes first, and if that mean to vote somebody who has the power to bring the US economy back up, then I will vote for him, even if he is not so friendly to Israel. I live here in the US not in Israel. Israelis can care about their problems without my help, they need to rely on their politicians and their citizens, not in the US president, he is the US president not Israel's president or PM.
73. #50 Hannah, I can feel your pain, and I share it.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.17.12)
Israel is approaching a point of no return and there will be a civil war. Very painful, indeed.
74. Liberals Jews; stop attacking the Messenger
Ari ,   New Orlean, USA   (10.17.12)
Attacking the author will not save you from the truth. Look at the poll she mentioned. The US Jews gave the answer not the author of this important article. Killing the messenger will not save you from guilt over your excuses of why you deserted Israel for anti Israeli Obama.
75. Israel Betraying Long Term Jewish Interests
World Citizen ,   the world   (10.17.12)
Why should Jews outside of Israel want to back a country that constantly chooses war to solve its external and internal social and economic problems? Why back a country that is scorned by most of the civilised world for its racist and apartheid policies towards the Palestinian people? Why back a country that doesn't have a constitution, bill of rights, set borders and has a legal system run by religious fundamentalists? And please spare me the tired, old canard that Israel is a last refuge for Jews in case of another shoah. What Israel is doing is egging on another world war that will bring on a worldwide holocaust for all of mankind, Jews included.
76. Jews and the GOP
Holtzmueller ,   US   (10.17.12)
This article is a bunch of loaded crappy republican propaganda. The "upscale" Jews are NOT liberal and with the rest of gentile 1% vote their economic interest. Any there are other Jews or Gentiles who vote for the GOP, it would be safe to assume, there best course for them is a medical mental examination. It looks the author of this article belongs to that second category.
77. economic comfort, upscale social life
FL Jill ,   Kew Garden Hills, NY   (10.17.12)
Shoula Romano Horing is very confused about the reality of Jewish life in the diaspora. I am a Jewish 26 year college graduate, and I do not live in economic comfort nor do I have upscale social life. I work a job that barely pays rent in a small studio. Disposable income for entertainment is laughable- and if I did have extra money- I would use it to buy health insurance, which I currently go without. Perhaps Should Romano Horning could look closer at her own Jewish Community in North America, and see that it is not the desire of wealth that drives the liberal Jewish community to vote for Obama- instead it is a prayer of resistance against economic inequality in America
78. Liberal Jews voting Obama
Israeli/American ,   ny, ny   (10.17.12)
First: to be against Netanyahu does not mean betrayal of Israel only of his determination to alienate the Obama administration. Second: Romney made clear that other than his close personal friendship with Bibi he will not differ from Obama vis-a-vis Israel Third: Most Jews I know in the U.S. despise Romney for his falsehoods, his determination to take Choice away from women and keep them as unequal and less than men in the workplace in terms of compensation. So to be a Liberal Jew and believe as an Israeli that Israel is better of without the Westbank does not mean a rejection of Jewry as seems to be the perception of most commentaries on Ynet
79. Liberal Jews
Cheryl ,   Chicago, IL   (10.17.12)
You have chosen the golden calf over your own people. Shame on you!
80. Israel betrayed liberal jews
Shmuel ,   Sderot   (10.17.12)
Liberal jews are not recognized as jews in Israel, they can not even marry an Israeli, so why bother, if there was freedom of religion, their behaviour would be quite differend believe me, the monopoly of the orthodox is to blame, they mean the end of Israel
81. Perfect Analysis
COREY ,   Geneseo NY USA,   (10.17.12)
This article is exactly correct and the facts presented in it should frighten every Jew. The idea that to American Jews who are overwhelmingly politically liberal abortion is a more important issue than US -Israeli relations is terrifying and does not bode well for the future of American Jewry. The cliche that history trends to repeat itself is based in reality and American Jews should wise up and realize how important a safe Israel is to their own security. In addition the personal attacks against the author of this article are painfully moronic. It does not matter where she lives or why .Her analysis is correct and important everywhere on our planet.
82. answer
Mark ,   California USA   (10.17.12)
nobody in america cares about israel. you hear about israel in the media from time to time, but that is just propaganda by the zionist agents in our media.
83. "Liberal Jews"
Yitzchak ,   Florida   (10.17.12)
Are these so called "Liberal Jews" really Jewish? You can't prove it by me.
84. Typical Israeli hatemongering
arik ,   usa   (10.17.12)
For many Israelis, any Jew which puts the country he/she lives in before Israel is a traitor. The only surprising thing is that Ynet publishes this drivel. Fortunately, I don't believe that these kinds of articles really influences anybody's opinion and are just there to generate alot of talkbacks and get people to check out the website. Again, this woman should really be deported from the US since anyone who advocates that a group cast their vote for the benefit of another country rather than the US is .... a traitor.
85. Betrayal of Israel by Liberal Jews
A. Gilbert ,   Los Angeles, CA   (10.17.12)
The author is frequently astonished and amazed by the disinterest of American liberal Jews in Israel's well-being. Nowhere does this superficial assessment consider, for even a word, that the belligerent policies of the current thuggish Israeli government may be at fault. For this author, as for so many others, if you don't blindly follow BiBi, you're anti-Israel and, most probably, anti-Semitic. Now that's what's really amazing!
86. I am not a liberal
American ,   Chicago   (10.17.12)
but Israel doesn't make my priority list at all. I am an American, period. Being born jewish is just a cultural thing that I and my family and friends are not concerned with. Ditto for Israel, it's just there!
87. Well said.
cwxj415 ,   Palm Springs, CA   (10.17.12)
Well said, Mr. Gilbert. "Thuggish" is a perfect description of the policies of Netanyahu and his Likkud government of ethnic cleansing, theft, dispossession and hypocrisy.
88. You are wrong
Yochanan ,   NY   (10.17.12)
I am an orthodox jew and am voting for Obama. He is a mentch. He is trying to avoid the loss of innocent lives and he is negotiating with the Iran Crazies and using sanctions. He will bomb them when all else fails. The so-called liberal Jewish Americans are concerned about the tens of thousands of Americans who die each year because they dont have health insurance. They dont believe in George Bush's statement that they can always go to the emergency room. While I am generally against abortions, the Catholic church has no right to impose its belief on everyone else here in America that the mother dies even if the fetus is a threat to the mother. The Jewish American is concerned when many Americans are suffering from the economy that George Bush put us in and Romney goes along with the Tea Party and say no more tax hikes for the millionaires to help solve our deficit crisis The Republican Party today is callous and indifferent to the middle class.
89. #84 arik
DavidR ,   USA   (10.18.12)
Well, if that is true then you better pack me up and deport me also. I am a 100% service connected disabled Vietnam Vet. Do you think you would have the guts to tell me I am a traitor to my face? It would not be healthy. Casting ones vote for what is right regardless of how it benefits any nation is a patriotic thing to do. You go ahead and vote for evil if you wish.
90. Wrong
Mark ,   Australia   (10.18.12)
So we should support the mythomaniac Netanyahu or we are traitors. Enlightened and intelligent argument there
