I find this article interesting because the observation seems to be media based. I am a non Jew and have lived in Israel and visted on 3 different occassions as recently as last month. I volunteer here with the Jewish community as well as abroad. I ound the The Jewish people here of ALL ages not only DO NOT identify with ISREAL (the people or the land) but see themselves ONLY as Americans. Israel isn't losing American Jews because of anything Israel does or anything Lieberman says. Israel is losing America's Jews because America's Jews are assimilating and intermarrying into non-existence at an ever-increasing rate. Right now, almost 60% of American Jews marry outside the faith. 95% of American Jews have NEVER visited Israel. Most Americans outside of NYC have not been exposed to war on their home turf, and as such, often have no idea what Israelis have to go through , and have gone through , on a daily basis.It is like an action movie that you can turn off when you leave the theatre.I think this has more to do with the distance and lack of understanding than assimilation. I grew up in Brooklyn, on the Hebrew Rez and have lived most of my adult life in places where there are few Jews ,and places where they don't even know what a Jew is. I do see a lot of Jews who benefit from the fact that Israel is our power base , and truly believe that American Jews enjoy the liberties they do today because Israel has existed since 1948, and still exists as a Jewish state in our original homeland . But American Jews love their country, and worry about the future of the US, as much as Israel. I think many Jews joined in and felt a part of Pillar of Defense , and I think when they get their own lives settled, they will reach out again to I srael as they have in the past.
