But his assertion that he is an American writer rings the bell of truth with me after reading several of his books. Many non-Jews writers also make Jewish characters popular. The joke is that there is no coherent understanding as to who is a Jew. It's a catch-all word, making writers' lives easier; like syaing "walks like a duck, quacks like a duck ..." yada yada.
