31. haredim go against torah
dale ,   usa   (07.31.13)
The haredim dont respect the law.they go against the torah.where in the torah does it say women must sit in the back of the bus? They should cut their benefits out for sitting on their tuchas at the expense of the state.
32. Isnt it the Religious Leadership who
Tim ,   Brighton   (07.31.13)
Set their standards of behaviour? What have they to say? Of course we respect THEIR sensitivies and we expect the SAME respect in return
33. just let them ... these poor souls
Reuven ,   Netanya   (07.31.13)
They are about to bring there own demise ... just a matter of time if they don''t adapt. I know personally haredim who are not like this and how are even ashamed about things that are happening in J'lem and BShemesh. You want to tackle this issue, go to the rabbi''s of that area, strip them of their status if they don''t want to publicly condemn this act and replace them with moderate ones. This extreme religious thinking need to be erased or we end up like Iran ... and were do you start, at the source ... the rabbi. Not one of these people (slaves) will do a thing before they consult their rabbi first, they don''t have the ability to think for themselves ... so ...

Josh ,   Tel Aviv   (07.31.13)
The headline is a bit Orwellian, the couple was arrested for demanding that the lady move to the back. Did they use physical force? Since when is demanding something a crime..They can demand all day if they want. Yes Haredim are nuts, but I don't see how you can arrest someone for "humiliating someone." it sets a terrible precedent. If the Haredim want segregated buses they should use their own private buses.

If you want to live in a theocracy you can choose any number of Arab countries. There is no excuse for your hatred of women in Israel.

In Israel "Zero tolerance" is only used against Arabs.
38. women being forced to back of bus
Tamar ,   Israel   (07.31.13)
If they don't like how women dress, they should close their eyes. We don't interfere with their lifestyle and they shouldn't interfere with ours. G-d is the judge of all people, not humans.

Sarah, you can't be serious. Those haredim who throw stones and riot, because their minds are in the 17th, 18th or 19th century don't deserve any respect. Haredim must accept that Israel is not a theocracy and that women can wear short skirts and a top anywhere they want, especially during summer. Israel is a free country and I don't want any Haredi to tell a woman where to sit!

Who smashed the windows on the bus? God ?
41. 5. Totally agree with Charles
S Judah ,   Jerusalem   (07.31.13)
Whilst I am observent , this is nonsense. It has no basis in Halacha, it's an additional Chumra that can only be applied on a Voluntarily basis. Such behaviour is against civil and religious belief and common decency. It should be crushed. We could do with some major Rabbis speaking out against this.

Israel is not Afganistan and will not be ruled by a Jewish branch of the Taliban. Israel will not be destroyed by the Arabs, but by the religious crazies.
45. I was on the bus # 497
Brian ,   Bet Shemesh Israel   (07.31.13)
I was on the bus # 497 from EGG-HEAD in Bet Shemesh and I can tell you first hand the real story, not the story that someone is imagining. An American lady (close friend of my aunt Shirley) was sitting in the front part of the bus, a lady asked her if she would move together with her to the back of the bus to make room for the men who are standing, and she replied " sure, no problem" the man who took her seat said: "thanks so much for giving up your seat for me" and the driver over heard it. He then pulled over and summoned the POLICE they where there in a few minutes, they questioned the women and she said "I did not mind giving up my seat for this man" UH that was enough for the police to arrest the men, for no real good reason. Don't believe everything you read on the news.........

Are we going to be lucky one day and get rid of you once and for all ??!!! You are a tragedy and a disgrace to Israel. Stay in New York and SHUT UP
49. Brian , 45 . We should believe you ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.31.13)
It's not the first time such an incident occurs .
50. Haredim radicals
Dr. Philip Weinstein ,   NYC   (07.31.13)
The Haredim are worse for Israel than the Muslims are. They are not practicing God-pleasing religion! They are hateful and think that they will be saved from hell with their adherence to THEIR doctrines. Very sad and sick people need to be contained by government.

Explain to more one more time why this nice lady had to get up and schlep to the rear of the vehicle; were these Heredi so invalided that they could not do like wise. Someone trying to suggest this in the US would likely be told where to get off. Yes one should respect a different culture but this is not culture it is downright ignorance.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.31.13)
While we generally disagree , here we have the same ideas , fine .The only person who spoke out against the behaviour of some charedim was the boss of Zaka . I'm also waiting for an influential Rabbi to speak out against such acts . Such a condemnation would of course be in favor of the fine chartedim who are now associated with those unbelieving people
53. Brian , LIAR . it was a bus # 417 ! not 497

Egged must stop immediately all services to that settlement, until they receive full compensation from the rioters for the damages incurred and those arrested are sentenced to jail.

Mike ,   Toronto   (07.31.13)
Is there no chivalry in Israel? Why don't these men voluntarily give up their seats to a lady? Why don't these men sit in the back themself? I don't want my daughter growing up or visiting a country that treat our most cherished citizens like an animal. Shame on them for acting in such an ungentlemanly way.
59. #16: Nonsense, Torah does not enforce such separation
Carl ,   USA   (07.31.13)
This is entirely a product of rabbis afraid of female "cooties". The Torah does explicitly forbid violence against people.
60. How can one know if the bus is kosher?
Israeli 2   (07.31.13)
Is "KOSHER" written for all to see before boarding? Are there numbers for tourist to know? Is the color of the bus different? Will tourists be treated the same? B.S.! Let this better not happen to me since all hell will break lose otherwise. The buss driver was correct, provoked or not.
