Nothing wrong with being asked to wear a headscarf when teaching at a Muslim School. It shows respect to the religion. I notice that Alex Crawford of Sky News always wears a head scarf when she is interviewing people in a Muslim country. Catholic school wouldn't even employ teachers that weren't Catholic. As someone else observed, if you don't like it then don't teach there. Every school has the right to preserve its own ethos and every parent has the right to decide on the type of environment they want their children to spend their time in. If teachers don't like it, seek employment elsewhere. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school. Muslim children need Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental period. You better teach your children in your own schools and let migrant communities teach their children according to their needs and demands. British Establishment and society should concentrate on the evils of their own society and stop trying to change the way of life of Muslims. Muslim community does not want to integrate with the British society, indulging in incivility, anti-social behaviour, drug and knife culture, binge drinking, teenage pregnancies and abortion. A Muslim is a citizen of this tiny global village. He/she does not want to become notoriously monolingual Brit. He/she is well versed in standard English, Arabic, Urdu and other community languages so that they do not find themselves cut off from their cultural heritage and are able to enjoy the beauty of their literature and poetry. There are hundreds of state primary and secondary schools where Muslim pupils are in majority. In my opinion all such schools may be opted out to become Muslim Academies. This mean the Muslim children will get a decent education. Muslim schools turned out balanced citizens, more tolerant of others and less likely to succumb to criminality or extremism. Muslim schools give young people confidence in who they are and an understanding of Islam’s teaching of tolerance and respect which prepares them for a positive and fulfilling role in society. Muslim schools are attractive to Muslim parents because they have better discipline and teaching Islamic values. Children like discipline, structure and boundaries. Bilingual Muslim children need Bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods, who understand their needs and demands. Natutei Karta had nothing to do with the school in question -- Yesodey Hatorah. Belz do recognise the State of Israel and had a long-standing row with Satmar as a result. Satmar Rebbe called natuirei karta 'misguided outcasts' and rejects any ties.

Many ancestors of today's British Haredi children came as refugees from pre-WW II Germany. Britain accepted 10,000 Jewish children while the US Senate refused to accept any. Many Commonwealth Muslims arrived in Britain as asylum seekers, while others from the Commonwealth came to fill jobs for which there was a shortage of labour post- WW II. There is no link whatever between Haredim who came in the 1930's and Muslims who came a generation later.
36. I understand your view Number 33
Yossi ,   London England   (09.29.13)
As a teacher I well understand your view Iftikhar Ahmad. We British Jews also don't want our children mixing in a society with drugs, knives, promiscuity and general degeneracy. This is why so many parents opt for faith schools and this is why H M Govt finance, Christian and Jewish schools and some Muslim schools as part of parents human rights. On the other hand the law prohibits a school that receives public funding from employment discrimination, and even 'ultra-Orthodox' British schools routinely include both Jewish and non-Jewish teachers, expecting all teachers to respect the school's ethos. We might have guidelines for a dress code such as skirts below the knees, sleeves below the elbow and a decent neckline, but there is a limit to how much a school can require in terms of teachers' dress. The school in question seems to have gone beyond the professional consensus, comparable to us asking non-Jewish male teachers to wear four-cornered fringed garments like all our boys wear.
