Andrew Friedman ,   Lakewood, USA   (10.07.13)
Dear Yigal Sarna: I am sure the council of Europe is very happy with your positive opinion on their anti-circumcision resolution and their efforts to wipe out the Jewish people for the past two thousand years. They will keep it in mind the next time they send you (or people who your are unfortunately related to and associated with) to the gas chambers or allow your countrymen to get bombed by some of your Arab neighbors.

RJE ,   Adelaide, Australia   (10.07.13)
If you choose to live in Europe then you are obliged to accept that Europe is secular and that it cares more for its children than it does about primitive superstitions. Real Jews move to Israel, hypocrites stay in Europe. Euros are your religion.
37. Nature would create a man without the foreskin.
Michael ,   California, USA   (10.07.13)
The survival of the fittest over millions of years would give us humans without a foreskin, or animals without foreskins, if it was for the better. There is a reason by nature for the foreskin to be there and we haven't discovered it yet, so this debate might go on until the reason is discovered. But the Council of Europe wants us to stop messing up nature, causing pain to the child and losing a lot of pleasure as adults. The Council of Europe has a lot of smart people within it, and this includes many smart doctors. Nature makes no mistakes, but simpleton people make many mistakes. Circumcision is a mistake going against evolution and a crime committed upon the child.
38. Yigal Sarna on Circumcision
Perez Felix ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.07.13)
Shame on you ! You know that many non jews use circumcision ; you know that it does NOT remove any fonctionality as for female genital mutilation ; you know that you also cut nails to your children ; you know that you also do surgeries on your children or teeth interventions that causes pain etc etc. But you ignore all that just by self hatred and also by hating a billion uslims and half of american and canadian men ....
39. Preferable to darkness of relition
Dr. Zachary Barneis ,   Beer Sheva, Israel   (10.07.13)
I agree with Yigal Sarna with one point in his article: the decision is not anti-Semitic. It also is against Islam and Muslims. And while some will say that most Muslims are Semitic, anti-Semitism has nothing to do with Semites – it is just a plain reference to anti-Jew. "It was this ritual - which is "primitive" when it is performed in other tribes…" Where has any Jew branded circumcision by other "tribes" as being primitive? Other than, of course, people like Sarna who is against circumcision of newborns. What has been said is that when it is practiced under conditions that are not sanitary or done by people who are not trained it can be dangerous. But where, as Jews who see it as a connection with our history and religious practice ever called it primitive in other "tribes"? "Had I been consulted with as a newborn, I would have approved, on the spot, the Council's decision to ban circumcision "before a child is old enough to be consulted…" Come on – if you were not old enough to be consulted, how could you approve or disapprove? What you are doing is applying your attitude as an adult to what you may have thought as a newborn. A ridiculous comparison at best. By your measure, maybe we should ban childbirth. The child was not consulted as to whether or not he/she wanted to be born. FGM – interesting comparison. Was part of your penis or just the foreskin removed? FGM involves, among other things, the partial or complete removal of the clitoris. This impairs the ability of the woman to enjoy sexual pleasures and even makes it painful. I assume this has not happened to you. You should learn more about what FGM is before you go making ridiculous comparisons. Ritual slaughter? – there is still disagreement and argument as to whether shechita is painful to the animal. And other painful rituals ? As to whether a circumcised penis is more aesthetic than a non-circumcised one, I can make no judgment one way or the other. I do not go around examining how men look by that measure. However, can you give anyone any evidence that "It is also possible that as a result of the circumcision ritual…we experience less sexual pleasure…" "I admit that I am closer in spirit to the Council of Europe than I am to the Council of Torah Sages and those who swing chickens over their heads. And I'm proud of it." Most Jews do not agree with those who swing chickens. However, the Council of Torah Sages is not the only group that endorses the brit milah. Reform, Conservative, Orthodox as well as the ultra-Orthodox do also. And I am closer to these groups and to my history than I am to the so called "progressive" Council of Europe when it comes to this issue. And I am VERY proud of it.
40. Circumcision
Robert Steppe ,   Calgary Canada   (10.07.13)
It is so sad to see the fundamentals of Judaism being eroded by it's very own people once again. You think like the nations, you become the nations. It is Torah that sets us apart, and the following of Torah is what keeps us alive, not blending in.

43. would an atheist defend children/infants circumcision?
ygalg ,   israel   (10.07.13)
why only religious commenters defending it? bringing health as an issue but a smokescreen where it obvious defending out of religious conviction. being a jew does not constitutes a religious identity. the notion being against circumcision, means self hating jew, false. a jew must to succomb to your religious worldview, otherwise antisemitic? to agree everything primitive traditions decrees even where wrong?

45. Preferable to darkness of religion
Lazerbenabba ,   London, England   (10.07.13)
I have to say that I am rather ambivalent regarding circumcision. As a very secular and atheistic Jew, I am still strongly connected to my forebears culture and traditions. However when attempting to understand the RELIGIOUS significance of perpetrating an unnecessary deformation on the male genitals, I am at a loss. Before all the very knowledgeable yeshivah bruchas give me word, line and verse from Talmud as to the reasons, unfortunately that would be like water on a ducks back as I attach no importance to religious dogma of a any description. I do not miss and never have done that I am bereft of my foreskin but it would have been nice to have been consulted at a later stage in my life. As to some of the talk backers comments re the author being a self hating Jew and other similar ridiculous statements, I am very pleased with his light hearted and eminently sensible article.

G-d does not create us as perfect Jews but commands us to do something to reach that level. ok, so let;s take into account that you negate what you are meant to do- of course you will never have satisfaction! And dont expect to in anything in your miserable life.
49. 37 , the "jew hater" again

I told it already , you're worse than this split . Where did you find that men who are circumcised enjoy less ? Can you give some references ? All the rest in your barking is , as always , showing your hate for everything Jewish

According to your theory, no human being should be born with an appendix either.
51. circumcision's side benefits...
Robert ,   Antwerp Belgium   (10.07.13)
Circumcision is known to protect from infections because the room between the foreskin and the gland is difficult to clean . When you remove the foreskin , it takes away a source of infections. If the European council would be fair it should first ban piercings and tattoos which are often done in unhygienic conditions. That it chose to pick on circumcision and ritual slaughter first ( instead of forbidding cooking live lobsters) shows that it just has an agenda against Jews and muslims
52. Appendix was once an organ, like the tail: monkey => human.

Isn't it too bad they don't teach zoology in the Yeshiva? There is so much to know, dear anonymous. How can you stand the meaninglessness they fill your brains with?
53. From someone who knows...
Shachar ,   Eilat   (10.08.13)
Better getting circumcised when you're a baby than later, it is much more traumatic later in life. With regards to sex there is no difference between before and after and circumcised is definately more hygienic. As for the barbarism, a little bit of ancient barbarism is good for the soul. Europeans are going overboard with their sensitivity again. Parents decide what is best for their children, unless it is extreme case.
54. EU funds male circumcisions in Africa
On the Balcony ,   Akko/NY/Kyiv   (10.08.13)
Male circumcision has been endorsed by the World Health Organization for use in Africa as an "efficacious intervention for HIV prevention" based on studies funded by the U.S. and Europe. It is difficult to understand how the EU can encourage and fund male circumcisions in Africa while simultaneously banning it for their own people...

Do any of you think the practice of the moel putting his mouth (with or without herpes) on the penis should be banned ?
56. Food for thought...
M. Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (10.08.13)
I'm not going to say the resolution is anti-Semitic until I see what "age of consent" is determined. IF that age is decided as anything under the age that Muslim boys are circumcised (usually around 12), then this resolution IS targeting Jews. For those living in Israel and claiming they will not circumcise their sons: Think what kind of trauma your son will go through the first time (and likely every time) he showers or changes clothes with others present (whether at a summer camp, Gadna week, sports team or the IDF). Now think of the implications of undergoing circumcision at an age when the boy already has erections, often involuntary, that can (and often do) tear open the healing circumcision wound, leading to infections and other complications. Uncircumcised males may suffer from phimosis (the inability of the foreskin to retract over the glans). Studies show that the average rate of this condition is approximately 8% of all uncircumcised males. That means one in twelve. The question of whether sexual relations are better or worse for circumcised males is a matter of opinion-- there has been no scientifically conducted study with valid methodology and peer review. It's long been felt in scientific circles that the only valid methodology would be to take a sample population of uncircumcised men, record their nerve impulses during sex, circumcise those men and record their nerve impulses after healing is complete. Using two separate groups of individuals, one circumcised and one not, has long been discarded as a valid basis for comparison. Anecdotally, men circumcised at a later age have expressed regret that they did it so late, but report no significant difference in sensations during sex. This is in line with the fact that the body's largest sex organ is the mind. On the other hand, there have been a number of valid studies regarding the preference of sexually active women-- whether they prefer to have sex with circumcised or uncircumcised men. Overall, about 68% prefer circumcised men. Reasons given vary, and include cleanliness, esthetics, the higher incidence of cervical cancer among women who have sex exclusively or mainly with uncircumcised males, and the opinion that circumcised males have more "staying power", to delay their climax until the woman has hers. Consider these, and forget about the religious aspect for a moment.
57. Yigal You are an Idiot
Benjamin ,   Cape Cod   (10.08.13)
As the Jewish son of well meaning hippy parents, who also thought to save their son the pain of bricht mel la as a new born I can assure, you this procedure is much more traumatic, when you are older. This tradition, is what in essence distinguishes, jew from gentile, and Yigal, believes his child will be more accepted by the gentile world if he is more physically similar. The european authorities, who sponsor these attacks on brit, on shechita, etc. are really motivated by anti-semitism. When I say anti-semitism, I also intend to include arabs in this category (arabs are semites). They feel their european culture is under assault, by burhka wearing extremists who practices cruel, traditions, like brit, and slaughtering live animals etc. But the reality is these practices, (exlcuding burhkas) are part of an ancient culture, which forms the basis of modern western society, and should therefore be respected. Their lack of respect for our culture, an intolerance towards minorities rights. Is a warning sign of europe's descent into Barbarism, not unlike Pre-War Europe. Where our american boys will once again have to touch boots on european soil in defense of freedom.
58. silly article
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (10.08.13)
Though the author deplores the pain and barbarism, he still approves having it done to his son. Had he decided not to do it, for those same reasons, he would have made sense. You have to put your money where your mouth is!

1. Ever hear of the appendix? It has no use anymore yet it is still with us. 2. Do you remember your circumcision? Does anyone? So much for excruciating pain. 3. Less pleasure? Men usually do reach a climax when younger. How could pleasure be any less? 4. You seem to be one of the simpletons of whom you speak.
