Before the age of the internet, the NYT had a substantial subscriber base, but in the last 20 years it has severely dropped off & their subscriber base outside NY is very small. Why would any pay for news when they can get it for free? The NYT even charges for the online access. It's not even possible to find the NYT at most newsstands outside of NY.
