JL   (12.24.13)
why no other advanced country is held to or expected to abide by those same standards...
3. Good try but no cigar
Rafael ,   Sydney   (12.24.13)
This article is a standard gambit. It's only problem is that none of this antiIsrael obsessiveness applies to any other country. I live in Australia; Britain, Canada, Germany, the US whatever is not obsessively criticising Australia, despite all the civil right abuses taking place. The reason is obvious - because they'd be seen as hypocrities because of their own abuses. ..... Israel is obsessively criticised .. work out why .. its that hard.
4. The usual fourth article on Ynet
Sidney ,   USA   (12.24.13)
Another left wing criticism of how badly Israel treats the poor Palestinians. It is just pointless to point out the many flaws that are all variations on the same themes, e.g. Israel's restrictions are based on the territorial ambitions of religious extremists not security. The one thing I would add is that the pressure on Israel comes not from the general public, who in general have no interest in Palestinians or dislike them, but from governments and elites from academia, media, and the arts.
5. Aviad, you must be a Leftie&fool:we're "expected" to survive
tom ,   tel aviv   (12.24.13)
-nothing less than that. Stick to your version of "History", that is no doubt more in tune with the Fascist, Muslim narrative.

Leftist spawn of a leftist Maryland college: look to your own, Provost.
7. The 'advanced countries of the West?
tiki ,   belgium   (12.24.13)
You mean countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Greece, Kosovo, Servia, Albania, Hungary a.o. where 'human rights have become the civil religion? Or are you talking about the 'civil religion of human rights on the island of Lampedusa, of the expelled Gypsies of France, the shameful treatment of fugitives in many of these 'advanced countries of the West? Or maybe you meant the civil religion of re-occurring anti Semitism in the streets of Sweden, France, Britain, Holland, Belgium a.o. 'very advanced countries of the west. Please, spare us the lectures about the West and their 'civil religion of human rights.
8. PLEASE spare us that leftist garbage !

9. Huh?
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.24.13)
"An 'advanced' country doesn't control another people, doesn’t leave an entire population under military occupation for nearly 50 years, and doesn’t discriminate in any way against its subjects who are deprived of rights." I have several immediate reactions: 1 - Quick, someone, tell the Chinese and the Tibetans; and 2 - Run -- tell the Americans; they've been occupying 90% of Okinawa since 1944!; and 3 - Annex Judea and Samaria and repatriate all Arabs in Judea and Samaria to Jordan, country of their citizenship.
10. Great article
(12.25.13)
If Israel wants to belong among advanced countries it should behave like one.
11. Only Advanced country under siege will not survive w. Left

the Hand of G-d with the academic boycott of Israel - measure for measure what the Zionists are doing to Torah scholars in Israel.

14. Advanced countries
Yaron ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
Dear Tiki, you cannot even start to compare the anti semitism you have in Belgium, France,... with what you have here against all what is not jewish. I don't want even to mention what is happening in the West Bank and Gaza. As you are from Belgium, are you imagining for example the city of Antwerp neglecting to pickup trash, no light, bad electricity connections, no standard amenities in the jewish ghetto? ... and that list go on and one.
15. One little item......WAR
Sam1am ,   Yehud, Israel   (12.25.13)
What Ynet and its fellow bleeding heart journalists conveniently choose to ignore IS that since 1920, the Jewish population in Israel is in a mortal struggle with its Arab Muslim enemies and they are not going to agree or accept any resolution that WILL NOT ENABLE THEM TO ABOLISH THE JEWISH PRESENCE IN THIS SLIVER OF LAND called Israel.
16. Greater Israel that is Araberenrein solves everything
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.25.13)
17. Rafael's words of wisdom!
Warren ,   Sydney Australia   (12.25.13)
As a fellow Australian, I wonder how Australians would like to see the Aboriginal issue and refugee situation here on the international agenda? Hmmm….their living standards and life expectancy make the Palestinians look like they are living like kings!
18. #15 Stop building those settlements
(12.25.13)
Until then no one will believe you. Israel's credibility is at an all time low.
19. good piece, deserves thought
elke ,   USA   (12.25.13)
The boycott was inspired by Israel's denial of academic freedom to the Palestinians -- which doesn't seem to be covered by the Israeli press in stories about the boycott. Palestinian scholars face severe restrictions on their mobility, affecting their ability to attend conferences, to visit archives and to collaborate with colleagues in their field. Many Palestinians who study abroad are denied re-entry. In 2008, Israeli forces bombed Gaza’s Islamic University, using US-made F-16 aircraft. At Al Quds University in Jerusalem, the illegal Israeli security wall bisects the Abu Dis campus, leaving 6,000 Al Quds students on the “wrong side” of the wall and unable to attend classes on the other side. Israeli soldiers arrested 400 Birzeit University students between 2003 and 2009. Nine thousand students at An Najah University have to cross one or two Israeli check-points in order to travel between their homes and the University. At any time, and in any location of the West Bank, Israeli soldiers can close roads leading to universities or can detain students and scholars at check-points. The Israeli public seems unaware of these factors. The world is not. Is academic freedom good for everyone but the Palestinians?
20. leftist trying to use anti semitism for politics
mordechai   (12.25.13)
Stop using anti semitic attacks on Israel to scare Israelis into supporting your leftist political ideas. The BDS crowd sees all of Israel including Tel Aviv as occupied. They don't care we are an advanced country. Indeed they reject that idea as racist. They don't care Great Britian occupies the Malvinas because Britian isn't Jewish. NATO ally Turkey can massacre Kurds and Armenians all day because they are not Jewish. China can ethnically cleanse Tibet because they are not Jewish. Israel is not occupying anyone else's land. Letting Arabs live as a minority in Israel is not a human rights violation. Would you prefer we expel them? The reality is extreme left ideas lose at election time so you encourage foreigners to impose their views on us.
21. Human rights
Joe ,   Fredericton NB CANAD   (12.25.13)
The author would like us to ignore the fact that israel is the only country in that "civilized" bloc that faces death from a population intent on wiping them off the face of the earth. And as for his elitist self view, china is no less civilized and I see no demands regarding Tibet. Nor isturkey, a member of NATO, disturbed by their occupation of Cyprus or their violation of human rights with respect to the Kurds.
22. Double standards...
Raoul ,   Herzliya Israel   (12.25.13)
are unacceptable and horribly convoluted. Period.
23. ASA boycott
Salvator Eskenazi ,   Istanbul/Turkey   (12.25.13)
Excellent .As Jews we should be able to find A solution to this problem of human Rights.
24. #14 yaron
solomon ,   bklyn   (12.25.13)
Are you saying that Israel should take the responsibility of supplying electricity, picking up the garbage, etc.. from Hamas and the PA (so that they can concentrate on terrorism)? Or do I misunderstand your post?
25. #10, #12 anon- surely everyone clearly sees
solomon ,   bklyn   (12.25.13)
how ridiculous are your posts.
26. to 10
igor ,   Canada, Thornhill   (12.25.13)
is your country advanced one?
27. Advanced countries have rights too
Sean ,   Canada   (12.25.13)
An advanced country does not have constant threats of destruction by their neighbours either.
28. Other Side Brutal Mass murderers
Zechariah   (12.25.13)
The Arabs as seen in Syria on both sides and in Iraq also and Afghanistan and Yemen are Barbaric Mass Murderers. In WW2 Many particularly the Arabs Mandated Palestine supported by Islam Aligned with Nazism but where Fearful of a British USA USSR victory so kept Quiet.
29. Boycott?
Naftali   (12.25.13)
Why are we reading this junk here, we don't get enough demonization in Haaretz? The boycott action by the ASA and the rest of them has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with rights or Palestinians.it has to do with Hews and nothing else. Have we learned nothing from the last time Jews were boycotted. Ghetto Jews like Aviad make me sick.
30. #14, Acmed, you have just described your Gaza street
