1. Guess they never heard of the law
Etti   (03.04.14)
" No one should force us" Well hate to break it to you honey but there is a law in this country that everyone is bound to uphold. Naturally they have no problem with secular people serving in the army sacraficing not only the best years of their lives but unfortuently sometimes their lives, so that them and their ilk can live in a country that allows them to live off the state. My daughter studied to be a doctor who has gone on not only to save lives but also to volunteer her services to overseas countries in saving lives. Is her studies less important? At least she will make a contribution to the state unlike the harideem who seem to think they are above the law. One nation one draft
2. Maybe the good rabbi should tell them to go get a job

3. #1 Guess you never heard of the law
Chaim ,   Israel   (03.04.14)
Well hate to break it to you honey, the law of the land is the Torah law and no one is about that. As long as secular people run the military it's considered according to OUR Torah a treif place and no haredi Jews are permitted to step foot in there.
4. It is not the studying that is a crime, but evading the law
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NYC   (03.04.14)
The various people that are trying to make this out as if the proposed law "makes studying Torah a crime" are depicting it all wrong. No one says that these men should not spend their lives studying Torah, just that they need to dedicate 2-3 years of their lives to the state and their communities as required by law. Before, during, and after they do their civil duty they can study.
5. All of these "scholars" more holy than the Rambam?
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NYC   (03.04.14)
Through out Jewish history our holiest scholars supported themselves by working in addition to studying/teaching. Are these boys claiming that they are more holy than those that they study?

"No one should force us to serve in the army & not study Torah," Faige, a 24-year-old mother from the Gur Hasidic community, told Tazpit News Agency. "This decision shouldn’t come from coercion but from dialogue."No one should force us to serve in the army & not study Torah," Faige, a 24-year-old mother from the Gur Hasidic community, told Tazpit News Agency. "This decision shouldn’t come from coercion but from dialogue.Very True + Hasidic"s should inform Sabra"s what there about, Not all 1 Family but Different Tribes with a Rabbi as King that uses Succession in electing a Leader etc, Israel"s unique position is to get the best without destroying the rest. Shalom Rav ?.

Love to see these young ladies in 10 years from now when they will have 5 kids under their feet and their Yankel potz learning husband won't be able to make a living for them. Then we'll see how dedicated they will be to their learning husbands. The lady of the house will be the one running to a job, taking care of the house, looking after the kids while her goof off, good for nothing learning husband will be twisting his payos and beard demanding full-time sex two weeks in the month. She'll oblige for the Rebbes of her community will tell her, its for Sholom Bais, that she must obey her lazy husband. Yes, life has a way of teaching people, however more often than not its too late for many. I wish these ladies luck only I am afraid they will be in very sorry shape 10 years from now. Finally I am expecting Ora to chime in and tell us oh how truly happy the ultra orthodox women are. Yes indeed if being a slave to a good for nothing husband is happiness, then they must all be very happy happy happy.
8. I think all Haredi leaders agree . . .
Danny ,   London England   (03.04.14)
The only thing worse than boys who left yeshivah who should have stayed is boys who stayed who should have left. Wearing a black doesn't mean you are suited to sit learning in yeshivah day and night. In the Diaspora we give scholarships and fellowships for yeshivah and kollel to those genuinely suited to full time study.
9. No greater Mitsvah
Koomta   (03.04.14)
than serving in the army. Shtuyot to make excuses They enlist in a group and all their conditions are met Pachdanim. How can they have this on their conscience? Answer: they don't have one
10. Reb Moshe Feinstein ztl
Joseph ,   London England   (03.04.14)
It's part of Jewish marriage that a husband supports his wife and children, so what's changed among Haredim? Post WW II, with the loss of all the European centres of Torah scholarship, Gedolim including the Posek HaDor Reb Moshe Feinstein ztl supported the move to kollelim and married men continuing to study full time for varying lengths of time. Traditional Judaism has rebuilt its ranks and benefited the wider Jewish community. There are today more boys in yeshivahs or kollelim and more girls in sems than in pre-war Europe. We need the confidence and strength to accept that many Haredi boys can serve better in the IDF or in the work force.
11. Nonsense
Tzierel bas Channa   (03.04.14)
Their scared little boys are nowhere near as holy as our religious soldiers. All soldiers are holy but some don't keep Mitzvot. THAT'S their excuse ? Ha ha . So Mummy runs to the street with a Siddur in her hand. So what! They are way below our sons and grandsons in holiness. Way below. Their problem is that they DO know full well that they can integrate in the army of today. Run to Mummy. For shame. I wouldn't be seen swaying and waiving a Siddur in the street. Cheap behaviour Stay at home and daven, like true Jewish women do. I don't think your little boychiks deserve the privilege of serving with our brave and superior soldiers. But I don't have a say. I need to listen and obey. So do you. So do your little boys. They have a lot of catching up to do spiritually, to reach our soldiers' madrayga, and that's best done away from you mummy dear. You know vey well they'll do fine. That's your true problem
12. Note to all seculars and mod. orth.:
Scarborough1414 ,   Scarborough, ON, CA   (03.04.14)
Don't make aliyah unless your life is in danger in your present country. If you are in a war zone or in a place where anti-Semitism is rife, then consider aliyah. But if you are in a fairly comfortable position where you are, then stay. Israel has no place for the secular nor for the modern orthodox. (If you are Reform or Reconstructionist, stay where you are no matter what). The Hareidim and the ultra-lefties will drive you crazy. You will not be listened to and you will lose every argument. You can't even agree with someone there because THAT'S a crime. Why? Israel is like high school, they can't be seen talking to a putz like you (in their opinion) because even if you AGREE with them, your talking to the Sabras makes THEM uncool. Israel is like a Jewish version of the movie "Grease". Cue the music.
13. The Rambam...
Aviva ,   Jerusalem   (03.04.14)
writes about himself that he was supported by his brother and he learned Torah until his brother lost his fortune (or died, can't remember). He says that for a chunk of his life his medical services were gratis. Most people who use the Rambam as the paradigmatic learner-earner haven't read any of the Rambam's writings.

Your photo has a lovely image of American Seminary young women, not Israeli Haredi.
