I don't see the US demanding an apology from *any* other country, though their officials criticize US leaders and their policy every day. Israel is a small country, but it's a sovereign state. It's not a vassal of the US. Yaalon's clarification was enough, even more than was required. The US is just trying to put Israel in its place. Israel should not submit. And so what if Yaalon is snubbed in Washington? When US generals come out to Israel, who are they going to meet, ex-President Peres?

Most people here seem to repeat two irrelevant claims "Ya'alon is right" and "We're not a colony." They are irrelevant, because even if they are perfectly correct, they don't matter one bit. We simply cannot afford losing the US, as we've already lost Europe - and without winning any other ally. Without the US, Israel won't have an army (and least not any equipment) and no support in the UN. We are not, Absolutely Not, on an equal footing with the US. The US can survive and prosper without Israel, Israel cannot survive without the US. No, we're not a US colony but we are completely dependent on the US. The democrats (who have the support of most American Jews) have close to three years still in the White house, perhaps longer. Ya'alon and the Obama-trashing talkbackers are doing much more damage to Israel by their ignorance of reality than the Palestinians are with their rockets.

The US really is weak, laughably so. Vietnam, Iraq, Aghanistan, Iran, Libya, Syria, Crimea – the message is clear: We won't fight for you; you're on your own. Are we supposed to apologise for stating the US's own obvious message out loud?

i have tried to explain to you numerous times that saint obama is not america. the strong disagreements are between israeli leadership and obama. the israeli leadership has no disgreements with the us security or intelligence apparatus. the israeli leadership appreciates the strategic alliance with the united states.

Seems he state department should be more concerned about the content of the constructive criticism rather than ignoring the message and feigning offense. What Yaalon said is absolutely true and needs no apology. Israel can not trust the USA to have Israel's back. By demanding repeatedly that Ya'alon apologise for his "insulting" strategic assessment, the Obama administration is trying to silence public discussion in Israel about the possibility of an independent strike on Iran's nuclear program. In doing this, the administration is trying to make it difficult for Israel to justify such a strike and by extension make it harder for the Israeli government to achieve the political support needed to conduct it. This is more than just the US being unreasonably sensitive: this is a devious political strategy.
