1. Shame!
Non Jewish immigrant ,   Haifa   (03.24.14)
I'll demand my country to forbid Jews to show off their religion into our faces and remove presto all magen David or any Jewish signs.
2. BS
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (03.24.14)
"... for the purpose of marinating (sic) the facility for the benefit of the detainees themselves." IF it were truly for the benefit of the detainees then there would be no reason for the policy forbidding pictures on the walls of their rooms.
3. To: No. 1
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.24.14)
Do us all a favor and deliver the message in person. And don't come back; you're not welcome in the Jewish State.
4. "bans the hanging of pictures of ANY kinds"
GS ,   Germany   (03.24.14)
So what?
5. nice....
james ,   ny ny   (03.24.14)
Key words here, infiltrated and paid allowance, please go to back to your homeland, you have what appears to be clean place to stay paid for by the Israeli taxpayers/government all that is asked is you don't display "pictures" on the wall, you came illegally into a foreign country and receive a stipend. Go home or be quiet!
6. #1
Aaron ,   Toronto,Canada   (03.24.14)
You're one dumb ass, one can go to jerusalem and pray at any church you wish but in a place od detention with rules of not hanging ANYTHING on the walls you can pray all you want in your room. And if you don't like it you can leave the country anytime you want I'm sure there's a one way ticket waiting for you to any Muslim country of your choice.
7. Send him back to Eritrea
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (03.24.14)
He can hang whatever he likes on the walls of his home. But as long as he is in Israel (illegally), he has to confine his decorating proclivities to what the rules of the facility dictate. If he's not happy with the arrangement, he is free to head home to Eritrea. No one is forcing him to stay.
8. Demand away !
Tzimmes ,   Tel Aviv   (03.24.14)
The simple answer for him and you,LEAVE !
9. He doesn't have to be in Israel if he is not pleased
Yehuda ,   Israel   (03.24.14)
We don't need his religious propaganda. Let him ask for human rights in his origin country, he will get cut into pieces
10. Religious Freedom, a Precious Right
Alan - Mérida ,   Mérida, Yuc., México   (03.24.14)
"The IPS said in response: "We respect the religious freedom of the detainees and allow them absolute freedom of worship.." Right, bureaucratic doubletalk belied by aribitary ban on religious symbols on his room's walls, and cutting off the normal refugee stipend. Go back to Eritrea, some of you say? Maybe YOU need to go there to discover the oppression this man, at much sacrifice no doubt, managed to escape. We Jews should understand the plight of the oppressed. Hey, we even have at least one festival coming up soon that talks about such conditions, and which should be understood as happening to us in our days. Yes, Israel cannot freely open the doors of its tiny country to the oppressed of the world. But for those who are within Israel, basic respect for their wellbeing, including their religion, is that s difficult to afford?
11. The pictures harm no one
Hidden Author   (03.24.14)
Your objections are just spiteful hate of people who don't act, look & think like you, like any Nazi or Taliban militant.
12.  SHOVE IT !
Chris Rettenmoser ,   Bayerisch Gmain Germ   (03.24.14)
13. Are all his roommates christians?
GS ,   Germany   (03.24.14)
What's the size of his room? Maybe it's the perspective, but seems large to me (see article). / Do they offer any warm meals to you, Mr. Abrae? I think so. TV? Radio? Education? You even can contact a lawyer in Tel Aviv - Mr. Asaf Weitzen - if Holot asks you to keep the white painted walls clean and you think this is against your christian belief. / And now, Mr. Abrae, you get all the publicity Lawyer Asaf Weitzen is looking and longing for.
14. Ignorance
Esther ,   Abroad   (03.24.14)
All you add to this discussion is your own ignorance. Do to others what you want them to do to you. Be Jewish and therefore an example to others - if you wish to be Jewish everywhere - like, say, in the USA let others be Christian in Israel as well. And do read up on the situation in Eritrea. And North Korea. And Iran. And then talk about him going back home. He didn't come here to make a fortune - but simply to live. Like - and I remember correctly - People did in 1939 as well - hoping to be allowed into a safe haven. You see, the mistake he has made is that he, as a Christian, thought Jews would treat him well. Because they are better People. Alas.
15. I would love to live in Israel forever..
Beary White ,   Norway   (03.24.14)
..with nothing on the walls. ;-) But I have accepted it has to be the other way around..: Israel and its people are living in my heart, with all its history in my brain.
16. Sarah darling
Non Jewish immigrant ,   Italy/Israel   (03.24.14)
Too bad for you but I'm welcome in Israel every time I come back
17. One day Israel will think differently
Dorothea Killus ,   Germany   (03.24.14)
One day Israel will think differently because Israel's God announces through his prophet Zechariah: “I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.“ (Zech 12:10) And this is also true what the same who was crucified and lives for evermore sayd to his disciples, “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven“ (Matthew 10:32).
18.  Asylum seeker
Lazerbenabba ,   London   (03.24.14)
I have to say that being only one of two Jewish boys at a London Grammar school, that the pictures/icons during morning assembly, with their graphic depiction of what amounted to open heart surgery and the very morbid and detailed illustrations of the crucifixion, were enough to give us both the heebie jeebies and even some of our Christian friends admitted that they often caused nightmares. Why this fascination for the grotesque? I believe that the Israeli authorities are performing a sympathetic service to other asylum seekers who have had enough trauma in their lives without having to view these rather obscene pictures. I am sure that the Marquis de Sade may have found them appealing.
19. Freedom?
Gene Graczyk ,   Santa Rosa, CA USA   (03.24.14)
Once again, Israel appears to offer one face to the world when it wants something and then another, harsher face when it thinks no one cares. Israel has diminished itself in the eyes of the world by this arbitrary restriction of basic rights. Its treatment of the asylum seekers is nothing short of shameful.
20. above
moishe   (03.24.14)
as the saying goes 'in Rome you do as the Romans do'. don't like it...then leave. Israel as a Jewish country has the same rights as other countries!
21. This is the country of the Jews!
Phoenix ,   Israel   (03.24.14)
We did not bring these african intruders into our land. They came alone and entered illegally. What now they are proud? Want to do their will in our land. Go to practice your religion in your own country. Please Keep deporting these african invaders.
22. In 1939 some Jews escaped from Germany. In Spanish Inquisitio
exUK ,   TEL AVIV   (03.25.14)
Jews were not allowed to practise their religion.Whilst we dont have room for everyone who is a refugee and is in danger in his own country,we have spent a lot of effort convincing the rest of the world that Israel allows freedom of religion and expression. But this sad example demolishes our case.Sarah, you are SOOO racially biased!
23. jews are one step away from the arabs
selam zeselama ,   telaviv   (03.25.14)
Jews are the most oppressed people in their history but they have one big problem.i.e they never see their history backword even for short period of time b/c they were refugees a decade ago.even now there are milion of jews refugees in urope ,us..etc living peacifully.so and now almost 7 ,years the african refugees live in ur country with out any legale status visa and now u relize that they were not refugees in one hand and in the the other hand we cant send them back home due to the international refugee convention.so we will lick them up.what kind of justification is that the only thing left for the jews to be like the arabs is the beheading of the christians .sha,e on the jews society.and i am shame to call u people of the almighty god. Tnx
24. honor basic human rights
tom ,   israel   (03.25.14)
israel needs to stand by these refugees and support them, not deprive as the jews were deprived so much throughout history. the victim so quickly becomes the bully.
25. All religions ought to be treated equally.
Michael ,   California, USA   (03.25.14)
It will suit me fine if no religious signs were tolerated, but it is definitely discriminatory to allow Jewish religious pictures (and prayers, books, etc.) while not Christian or Muslim ones. It matters not to me in this regard what he is, an immigrant or a citizen.
26. Peace-
Erin ,   USA   (03.25.14)
I guess there is still no peace in the land. Shalom.
27. Breach of the second commandment
Leon   (03.25.14)
99% of Christians are actually not Bible-followers at all but idolaters. It's the born-again ones that actually tend to respect the basic 10 moral laws.
28. Agents of Provocation
Zechariah   (03.25.14)
Such attitudes are Negative for the Jews .Religious Freedom as long as Not Nazi Jihadi or Satanic cults ought be offered great tolerance.
29. #21 You are not living in Israel.
GS ,   Germany   (03.25.14)
30. #17 Dorothea: It's not against Christianity
GS ,   Germany   (03.25.14)
in Holot. They simply have their rules and regulations. I am very sure he is allowed to pray and worship in his room.
