1. Your analysis was correct.
MizrahiIntellectual ,   USA   (06.01.14)
It is, however, apparently at odds with your personal views. You wrote an excellent example of the process that we are psychologically primed to take whem such a situation presents itself. Self awareness is the cure.
2. Chomsky is an antisemite Beinart has a broken heart
just saying   (06.01.14)
Chomsky is a die hard antisemite, Jews can be antisemitic the same as anyone else. Their reasons maybe different but it is true all the same. Beinart held/holds Israel to a romantic ideal that no country live up to, so the flaws overwhelm him, he is disappointed and angry at Israel for failing to live up to the ideal. It is also proof that smart people can be as stupid as anyone else.
3. Clarification: Zionism is first and foremost the affinity of
N.L.Katz ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (06.01.14)
Jews to Zion, also known as Jerusalem, and the country in the midst of which it is located. This strong affinity goes back more than 3,000 years, to the day the Jewish king, King David, set up the city as the kingdom's administrative, spiritual and cultural center, which it has remained to this very day.
4. There *are* some with credentials who *do* get it.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (06.01.14)
Just as there are "credentialed" intellectuals who fail to fully comprehend the world as it is, there are others at least as credentialed who do get it: The late Barry Rubin, for example. And Mordechai Kedar, Dore Gold, Martin Kramer, Jonathan Spyer, Guy Bechor, and numerous others. The problem is that their counsel is ignored or rejected, as it doesn't fit the narrative of the elites who make the decisions.
5. Education in itself implies position of "superior knowledge"
tom ,   tel aviv   (06.01.14)
thus all you have to do , is make sure that those providing knowledge do it on your terms. Youthful penchant for rebellion (sometimes with no real cause), academic need to "publish or perish": necessity to "break down old assumptions" lead to rewriting of practically everything but the gravity itself. Explosive mix indeed. Besides that: Chomsky & Beinart "intellectuals"??? Nae.....idiots, maybe.Who'd be next, Thomas Friedman, Shimon Peres??!
6. very simple. their religion is Communism
naro ,   nyc   (06.01.14)
They worship Communism above all. They care nothing for Jewish identity, and feel themselves internationalists. They would sell their parents and children on the altar of Communism. We saw this in Russia after the communist revolution.
7. The basic mistake of Chomsky & others....
Alan ,   Canada   (06.01.14)
They still do not understand in spite of blaring historical precedents that a lasting peaceful coexistence between democratic & intolerant undemocratic parties is an absurd line of thought. This fundamental impossibility is made even more insurmountable by the deep divisions among muslim factions & by the intransigent interpretation of their religious beliefs. There is no amount of Israeli give & take which can overcome these obstacles in the foreseable future.
8. Because such "Intellectuals" are the
DT ,   TA Israel   (06.01.14)
personification of total ignorance and self hatred. Chomsky the class 1 idiot has to teach his hatred at MIT which says nothing in favour of MIT. Better my children learn in a "Ghetto" university.
9. Yisrael Aumann has right leaning opinions
Israeli physicist   (06.01.14)
Look at professor Yisrael (Robert) Aumann who won a Nobel prize in economics. Professor Aumann is known for his right wing political opinions. This is not a coincidence. My impression is that most students and professors in the exact sciences faculties of Israel's leading universities are leaning to the political right.
10. Well and succinctly put.
History nut ,   Israel   (06.01.14)
11. ideology in the ivory tower
CJK   (06.01.14)
chomsky has been a marxist his entire life. chomsky hates america and he hates israel. he thinks that america is an imperial colonial power which is wildly capitalistic. chomsky considers israel as an outgrowth of the us. chomsky does not care about reality, only about his marxist ideology. as a result, he has supported many totalitarian war criminal regimes world wide provided they are leftists or islamists. he supports hamas, hezbollah, iran. it makes no difference to him that these regimes have slaughtered their own people or that they would commit genocide on the people of israel. chomsky does not lack knowledge but empathy and wisdom. he is unable to think rationally or to compromise intellectually. he is a lost cause, as are all truly convinced ideologues. obama is another one who is a convinced ideologue.
12. Everything you wrote is good EXCEPT
Israeli 2   (06.01.14)
the TITLE: "The failure of the Jewish intelligentsia" It is the failure of the obvious Jewish DEMENTIA. Why in the .......do they call these people "intelligentsia"? Also it is not as much Sephardi vs. Ashkenazim but Torah lovers vs. non Torah lovers.
13. another possibility
rm ,   NL Amsterdam   (06.01.14)
Maybe some people are too clever to see through the halftruths and whole lies that Israel uses to enhance and justify what they do in the territories?
14. intelligence does not guarantee accuracy
Larry ,   LA (formerly)   (06.01.14)
Just because a person has a high degree of intelligence or a high degree from college does not guarantee him that he/she is always correct. Just the opposite can be true: it means that he can convince more people of that his view is correct even if it is faulted. Why? Because many people are blinded by their 'feelings' and use their intellect to justify their actions or opinions. Simple folk just can not easily see their error and so assume that they are correct, but the fact that they can obfuscate the facts is no proof of their being correct.
15. His Problem. Our Problem.
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (06.01.14)
His problem is that he (NC) is an anti-Semite. Our problem is that we pay attention to him.
16. Duh!
Jimmi ,   Phila   (06.01.14)
Chomsky is one of the planet's worst anti-Semites, and Beinert is a clueless leftist
17. Article based on false even stupid premise
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.01.14)
The assumption that extreme Leftist anti- Israeli academics are somehow superior in intelligence to those who support Israel is not simply false but slanderous. Are Dershowitz, Ruth Wisse, Michael Oren, and countless other supporters of Israel 'lesser intelligences?
18. Jewish failed intelligentisia
Shifra Hoffman ,   JERUSALEM, ISRAEL   (06.01.14)
BS'D The late, great RABBI MEIR KAHANE of Blessed Memory described leftist Jews like Noam Chonsky who pontificate about the Arab-Israeli conflict as those whose arrogrance is superceded only by their ignorance! To fully learn and understand the problems faced by Israel from the implaccable Arab enemies read his classic book "They Must Go" and see website: www.victimsofarabterror.com
19. Being a commie means never having to say I'm sorry
Kate Binslall ,   New Zealand   (06.01.14)
Commies are not interested in the consequences of their mad belief system, even after hundreds of millions have already been tortured and murdered. That is why they are evil wicked people. We must admit that in general Yediot and the Ynet are firmly on the side of the leftie-loonies.
20. Well...
frank sol ,   san diego   (06.01.14)
Now you try to denigrate Islam, in a nice Zionist way... Jews had their golden years during the Islamic era. Just few of them, (the Zionists) had it hard at some times, they were the few, they have stayed in Arab countries and kept Palestine an Arab country, they could have conquered the world with everybody as their friend, now they will be despised, along with their blood brothers, the Takfiris.
21. #20
(06.01.14)
I guess you support Boko Haram for liberating the 200 girls from Christianity and then "marrying" them? I wouldn't want you to denigrate Islam...
22. AND THE WINNER IS:
Israeli 2   (06.01.14)
Shifra Hoffman @#18. Anyone who merely mentions the name of this great TZADIK -(RABBI MEIR KAHANE of Blessed Memory) and recommending his books will be the winners.
23. You fool yourself
Harri ,   EU   (06.01.14)
You have many intelligent possible leaders, but you don't like what they say, because they don't build houses for you but they look beyond the generations and build good future for unborn generations of the Jewish people. You are not interested in the future of the other Jews, you are interested in you own bank account. You like leaders who act like Jack Sparrow advised in The Pirates of the Caribbean: "Take everything you can and give nothing back".
24. #13 another possibility
Jerry ,   Austrlalia   (06.01.14)
In few hundred years when history is studied, Israel won't be judged harshly. Britain France Belgium Spain Nertherlands Germany will be. You cannot wash your collective guilt for the racist behaviour ,thievery mass executions slavery you all subjected your colonies in Africa Asia and America's for hundreds of years. whitewashing your past by participating with the irrational Arab " prince with no clothes" narrative . is stupidity at best Anti- Semitic at worst. Peddle your double dutch to Arabs. you self righteous hypocrite.
25. One correction, otherwise right on
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   www.netzarim.co.il   (06.01.14)
Teimanim are not Sepharadim, they are Teimanim. Yemen is not Spain or Europe and Teimanim don't track back to Spain or Europe; only Yemen from the time of Shlomoh ha-Melekh. Teimanim are acknowledged by the leading (Jewish) scholars as the most pristine tradition from Har Sinai to survive least subjected to external influences on the planet. And you're right that Israel would have done, and would still do, much better to pay most attention not only to their experiences living under Arab rule but their most pristine Torah tradition especially.
26. Raymond #4
Robert Haymond ,   Teko'a, Israel   (06.01.14)
You could add Dr. Martin sherman and political analyst Caroline Glick to your list. The problem is that the professorial class both within and external to Israel tend to be leftist in outlook, often Marxist, and repudiate the legitimacy of the nation-state of Israel. The worst of the intelligensia are, however, Jewish academics themselves. At the core, these people do not wish to be known or seen as Jews. It is a case of the Stockholm Syndrome, the drive to identify with the majority and thereby find protection within its web while stamping out one's own Jewish identity. It's a dirty business and, of course, it can't be done. I'd like to add to this in a follow-up post.
27. Follow-up
Robert Haymond ,   Teko'a, Israel   (06.01.14)
In effect, the academic class, the respective representatives of the media, the entertainment industry and artistic communities are largely "liberal" in orientation and, as a result, buy the phoney colonial and victim Arab line versus the "unjust" Israeli aggressors. It's the "going" thing. We have identified it, however, and gradually this ridiculous Pallywood view of the Mideast seems to be changing, resettling and rebalancing.
28. I call BS
(06.01.14)
Castro wonders why the "more academically gifted Jews" hate Israel, and the "less academically gifted Jews" are Zionists, and mentions Chomsky and Beinart. There is a very simple explanation: they are not more gifted. Their academic position (call it success if you must) relies on their anti-Israel opinions. These people are talentless hacks employed to hate Israel. If they became intellectually honest and were paid for their talent, they'd starve.
29. Oslo could have march
linda ,   Paris, France   (06.01.14)
I'm not leftist, but Oslo could have march if there isn't terrorism side Palestiniens and the assassination of Rabin, thanks our own mad men. That said, Chomsky is a self-hater.
30. #19 ,...
split ,   US   (06.01.14)
Your statement implies that 9 out of 10 Jews and almost 99% of ynet talk backers are commies. Looking at he founding father, the architects of this bloody enterprise looking who have supervised implementation you're right but I know that for a long time, pal, Jew can be or do or no wrong, no Sir, so there's no need for an apology ;) ,... Have a good one ,...
