Third degree burns destroy the nerve endings needed to feel pain. Skin is the largest organ in the body and yes, it will feel pain. Ever had a bad sunburn? Those aren't even classed as first degree burns. Pain comes with first degree burns -- pick up a boiling pot of water with no kitchen mitts or a potholder. You'll learn. That's a first degree burn. Your nerve endings are just fine, as you will discover. Dip your hands in the pot of boiling water you just tried to pick up. That's a second degree burn. Very painful. Now, let's chat a bit about third degree burns. First of all, you will always show a scar. An angry one. If it involves the skin to your face, which is thinner than the skin to the rest of the body, you will need skin grafts. If the burns to the face are serious enough, and third degree burns are, the bones beneath the skin will char. Invariably, they will need to be removed and replaced with plastic shields held in place with titanium screws. You will NEVER restore the burnt nerves. You will NEVER feel pain -- or anything else -- in your face. You will need hundreds, if not thousands, of skin grafts. If there isn't enough non-burned skin on your body, you will need donor grafts. Humans cannot provide the requisite grafts. And if you are an Orthodox, or ultra-Orthodox Jew, there's a problem. You need live tissue. And the closest to human skin is found on pigs. Skin grafts. Skin extenders underneath live skin. Extraordinary suffering. Surgery without end. That's just a tiny bit of what this little girl is facing. A grueling future; and she will never be who she was. Her beautiful face will never be fully restored. Too much damage. Tell me -- should we have a death penalty for terrorists?

face long ago when she was a little girl in a terrible accident. She had many reconstructive surgeries and grew up with the burn scars inspite of that. But her burns did not deter a US Navy sailor from wanting her for his wife and they are happy after many years of marriage at this point and live in Missouri. So, facial burns are not the end of a young girl's hopes for a marriage. Jenny's heart shines forth as her face once did when she was little. She did not turn into an angry person.

Death sentence in Israel is against the Halacha.

Actually, Israel has the death penalty in two types of cases -- war crimes and treason. (Note I said war crimes, not Nazi war crimes. That's what the statute calls for. In which case, we can probably hang everybody in Gaza.) Of course, were we ever to exercise the law, the hangman would be the busiest person in Eretz Israel. And the Arab population would be reduced by about two-thirds.
