the death penalty is not the solution to every problem, but it certainly cuts down on the rate of recidivism.
in the case of an unrepentant, violent criminal like this, wouldn't it have been better to err on the side of caution, instead of risking the life of another innocent victim?

They might well do. I happen to oppose judicial murder (the death penalty) with regard to all people in all circumstances. It is retribution - pure and simple (which may be attractive to many). It certainly doesn't deter - and in the case of terrorism may actually do the opposite.
