The attack is not meant to destroy Assad (that may not actually be a good thing). It is meant as a serious warning. Trying too big of an attack would only weaken the US position by lessening popular support at home. The attack is twice the last attack and will double the next time around. Assad and Russia/Iran will need to think hard before trying this again
