9. Desperate and pathetic
The BB cult are out in force with the usual "it's the truth" bla bla bla. But by doing this, he reveals nothing but the weakness of an ageing politician, terrified of losing power and a whole lot more terrified of the looming hearing that is very likely to lead to indictment.
It's not the country's welfare but this that he's fighting for. For this he's had to drop every last principle he may have once had in order to get the immunity that his lapdogs are lining up for him - and for themselves. He and his ugly, dishonest, bullying and non-functioning henchmen having been sapping the country dry and getting fat - in some cases very, very fat - on the people's backs.
Three times now his campaign has been about himself, not the country, not for its people. It's just me, me, me. And to do this he instigates and sows seeds of discord. It's the way of all tinpot dictators. They develop the paranoia of the power crazed and they lose sight of all reason.
So where is his statement so very wrong? It's not that we don't know that three quarters of the surrounding Arab world don't want the State or its people to exist. No. It's that he's lying to the teeth that his fiercest opposition is the enemy. He's lying about it being a left party as though it's straight out of the USSR. It is in fact a centrist party, condemned by the left for being too right! But what do facts matter when you have a paranoid, desperate man fighting to stay out of jail.
He's lying that Lieberman - a sworn and somewhat extreme right winger - is left. It's outright ridiculous. And he's lying about Odeh having any sway over Israeli politics. Odeh's offer to join a Blue and White coalition was rejected outright. So Netanyahu is clinging to straws, hoping that his gullible grass roots followers will believe every word and act accordingly.
So what he does, as the election gets nearer, is to instigate. He did it with Rabin - and it worked. He's doing it now, and it's working. Every day opposition party campaigners are now actually being physically attacked. Not all of it is being reported in the now Netanyahu-dominated media. It's Netanyahu's own version of the brown shirts -- and it is repellent.
This is not the country I came to in the late sixties. It has turned on itself. It is eating itself. And it's happened only since Netanyahu came to power and decided to stay there, forever. Just look at the odious conduct of his immediate family (bar one) to see how this has all developed.
It's so easy for reasonable people to turn back to barbarity. It happened in Germany, in Yugoslavia, and it's all being reawakened now. A leader that is leading people towards this ugliness must go, before it turns into unstoppable violence.
