Bibi, Landau : Sharon may leave Likud

Knesset members Benjamin Netanyahu and Uzi Landau send official letter to Likud Central Committee members, in a bid to convince them to push forward primaries

Knesset Members Benjamin Netanyahu and Uzi Landau (Likud) have sent an official letter to Likud Central Committee members, informing them that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon may leave the Likud and establish an independent party.

The two have joined forces prior to the committee vote at the end of September to determine whether to push forward party primaries.

"If Sharon plans to establish his own party, its better he does it now and not on the eve of elections," the Netanyahu-Landau letter said. "Sharon is trying to avoid committing himself from staying in the Likud, to maintain the possibility of leaving the party when it suits him."

The two Knesset members signed the letter pledging "to remain in the Likud, to unify the forces, to maintain their strength and to stop additional disengagements."

Netanyahu and Landau both responded to the report of such a letter Sunday, saying that Sharon's advisors have confirmed that the prime minister is closer than ever in deciding whether to leave the party he helped to establish.
