Olmert: Chirac great fighter of anti-Semitism

Like Bush, Mubarak, Abdullah and Blair, French president also receives praise from prime minister, who says 'Chirac leading fighter of anti-Semitism.' Olmert also informs French president of upcoming realignment

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is continuing on his diplomatic mission in an attempt to market his realignment plan and strengthen bilateral ties, as well as spread his stance in Israel and around the world. On Wednesday, it was the turn of French President Jacque Chirac to host Olmert, and receive his praises.

From the perspective of Chirac, who is stranded in political troubles at home, Olmert provided the goods when he branded him "one of the greatest fighters of anti-Semitism," "a veteran diplomat," "friend of the Jewish people," and "someone whose advice is very important to Israel."

For an hour, the two leaders spoke at the Elysee Palace. Prior to the meeting, during a public announcement before the press, the prime minister made sure not to forget the realignment plan, as the French government opposes unilateral steps.

According to sources in Olmert's entourage, the prime minister brought up the plan to Chirac, though he did not expect his support. The French president congratulated Israel's recent vote for Olmert, however, and did not hesitate to enter internal political issues.

"The last elections showed the world Israel's will for peace and security," the host said.

'New eruption'

"This comes from the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The time has come to impose a peace based on two states, living side by side. This is goal is very important, especially during these days, when we are witnessing a new eruption (of violence). The eruption proves the need for negotiations, and France and the EU are determined to contribute to a sustainable peace, that will allow both sides to live alongside each other in peace and security," the French president said.

Prime Minister Olmert complimented the French president with warm words: "Relations between Israel and France are relations based on cooperation and friendship, which began with the last visit of (former) Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. I am sure that this visit will widen the cooperation. You sir are one of those who set the three conditions of the Quartet for holding negotiations (with the Palestinians), you said with these conditions negotiations can be reached. I can promise you that I and the government of Israel will make every effort to maintain these negotiations. Cooperation with France is vital for continuing the process."
