Qassam on Sderot

Qassam rockets hit Sderot

Rockets land without triggering Red Dawn alert system, strike school, synagogue; damage done to structures. Resident: Don't forget what has been happening to Sderot for over five years; for us being in bomb shelters, secure rooms is almost routine

The Red Dawn rocket alert system failed to go off after two Qassam rockets were fired at Israel Sunday morning.

The alert system has not been warning Sderot residents of rocket attacks in the past few days.

One rocket directly struck an elementary school and a second Qassam hit a nearby synagogue, causing damage to the buildings.

A third rocket fell in the heart of the Rabin neighborhood in the middle of a street.

The Etz Haim School hit by the rocket is one of the oldest in the city, and is positioned in the heart of a highly crowded neighborhood.

Michael Amaslem, who lives nearby the school, said: "The rocket landed really close to my house. There were people praying in the adjacent synagogue and everyone returned to their homes. A loud explosion was heard, the house shook, and the children woke up with a fright. The problem is that the alert system is again not working, which only gives you a few seconds to prepare."

One of the residents said: "We woke up when we heard the sound of the explosion; I immediately ran to see that the kids were ok. Everyone tells us: 'Look what is happening in the north,' and our heart is with them, but we must not be forgotten. Don't forget what has been happening to Sderot for over five years; for us being in the bomb shelters and secure rooms is almost routine. My kids sleep at the house's entrance."

Hundreds of Sderot children set out for summer camps on Sunday outside of the city in various locations outside of the range of Qassam rockets. Some of the activities arranged for Sderot kids in the north have been cancelled.
