Syrian sources in Damascus claimed that Syria was looking into an initiative that would renew the “Arab Joint Defense Treaty”, under which new systems would be established, binding member countries to defend other member countries that are under attack.

According to sources, the Syrian initiative would be discussed by the highest grade of the Arab League, and would then be transferred to decision-making members in the League’s Summit committee meeting.
Syrian sources told Qatari newspaper “Al Watan” that Damascus was already assembling a group of diplomats and legal and international experts to examine the wording and clauses of the treaty.
It was also reported that efforts were being made in Damascus to revive the Syrian-Egyptian-Saudi axis, needed for consultations and closer contact between the countries.
In the meantime, Syria insisted on taking the possible outbreak of war with Israel seriously.
“Al Watan” claimed that the “Israeli aggression” that increased following the Lebanon war, was meant to intimidate Damascus, and to pressure it into looking weak and ridiculous, military speaking.
Authorized sources in Damascus pointed out that Syria managed to upgrade it’s army and develop its forces in the past three years.
They also said that Syria was prepared to go to war at any moment, and that there was an order from very high up to oppose any aggression, no matter how small it was or who was behind it.
