Hanukkah gelt: Haredim give more

New survey reveals: 61 percent of Israelis will give Hanukkah gifts to their loved ones. Most will give money

If you are waiting for Hanukkah money, there is a pretty good chance that this year you will receive it. A new survey reveals that 61 percent of Israelis intend to give Hanukkah money to their loved ones.

The survey was performed on behalf of Bank Leumi by Machon Midgam. The results show that 74 percent of Israeli households give their children Hanukkah money on the holiday. The haredi public is more vigilant about the custom of giving money on Hanukkah as opposed to the secular and traditional population.

In order to increase your chances of receiving Hanukkah money, you should stick around Grandma and Grandpa for a while.

According to the survey, 85 percent of those 55 years of age and older gave Hanukkah money to their children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephew last Hanukkah. This is in contrast to 81 percent of those between the ages 45 to 54, 63 percent of those between the ages 35 to 44, 44 percent of those between the ages 25 to 34, and only 17 percent of those between the ages 18 to 25 (who mainly gave to their siblings).

The results also show that men prefer to give children money, while women prefer to give them games and toys.

Seventy-eight percent of the men asked said that last year they gave children money, as opposed to only 64 percent of the women participating in the survey.
