The Knesset approved on second and third readings a bill proposed by MK Avshalom Vilan from Meretz and MK Yuval Steinitz from Likud, imposing a 3-year colling-down period for high ranking IDF officers before they can be elected into the Knesset.
According to the proposal, officers from the rank of major-general cannot be elected to public office for at least three years after their release. Steinitz said: "This is the first time we have a separation fence between our armed forces and our politicians." (Miri Chason)
