An Israeli resident of the West Bank settlement of Shavei Shomron was indicted Sunday for weapons trafficking and theft.
According to the indictment brought before the Tel Aviv Magistrates' Court, the man sold four standard IDF-issued rifles, a bullet-proof vest and some clips to Palestinians for NIS 70,000 ($20,000) which were supposed to go toward paying off some of his debts.
The indictment further detailed how the defendant offered to sell weapons and equipment to two Palestinians he had met in April of 2006, proceeding to sell them an M-16 rifle, a bullet-proof vest and six magazines he obtained from Shavei Shomron emergency unit's repository. Several days later he reported the weapons stolen.
The man allegedly proceeded to steal a Glilon rifle and a magazine from one of the IDF soldiers stationed at a nearby military post, selling those off as well.
In July of 2006, he stole another M-16 rifle and two magazines. The theft culminated in a fourth act, on December 2006 when the defendant allegedly stole another M-16 and matching magazines.
The Tel Aviv Magistrates' Court has issued a gag order forbidding the release of the man's identity.
