Report: Anti-Semitism on the rise in UK

Community Security Trust records 266 anti-Semitic incidents in first half of 2008, a 9% rise from 244 incidents registered in first six months of 2007

A rise of 9% has been recorded in the occurrence of anti-Semitic incidents in the United Kingdom in the first half of 2008 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity established to ensure the safety and security of Britain's Jewish community.

CST registered 266 anti-Semitic incidents until June 2008, compared to 244 incidents recorded in the first six months of 2007. According to the report, 166 of the incidents were of abusive behavior, including verbal abuse, hate male and anti-Semitic graffiti on non-Jewish property.

A rise of 88% was recorded in the number of anti-Semitic incidents involving Jewish students, student bodies or academics – from 26 incidents last year to 49 this year. Twenty-nine incidents were registered in schools and kindergartens.

The good news is a drop recorded in the number of violent anti-Semitic assaults from 54 incidents in the first half of 2007 to 42 over the same period in 2008.
