Olmert: Peace constitutes ultimate security

'We must advance negotiations with Palestinians, Syrians,' PM says during event honoring Israel's defense industry. Peres: Iranian oil funding terror

"Peace constitutes ultimate security for Israel and we must advance the negotiations to this end with the Palestinians and Syrians," outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday evening at an event honoring the country's defense industry in Rishon Lezion.

Olmert attributed the country's economic "stability" over the past three years to the government's "prudent policy, which resulted in the recent approval of the 2008 State Budget."

The PM thanked President Shimon Peres for his contribution to the advancement of Israel's defense industry.

During his speech the president addressed the Iranian threat, saying the Islamic Republic's oil in "is what is funding terror, and that is very dangerous.

"The basic problem in Israel and the world is that the price of oil must be lowered. Then they won't have the possibility of spending the money on enriching uranium and buying weapons. We will be the first in the world to lower oil consumption by using alternative energy," he said.
