Palestinian dies in Gaza smuggling tunnel accident

22-year-old man electrocuted by cables he rigged for light, power in tunnel under Gaza-Egypt border

A Palestinian health official says a man has been killed in an accident while working in one of the smuggling tunnels under the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

Health official Moawia Hassanein says a 22-year-old man was electrocuted by cables he had rigged for light and power in the tunnel.

Saturday's death brought to 12 the number of people killed in Gaza tunneling accidents this year.

Gazans use tunnels to smuggle in goods kept out of the Strip by Israel's and Egypt's blockade of its borders.

Terrorists also use them to bring in weapons. Many tunnels were badly damaged in Israeli bombing raids in an attempt to halt the arms smuggling. Egypt also tries to destroy tunnel entrances on its side of the border.
