Lieberman: Iranian regime illegitimate

Regime that denies Holocaust, fires at citizens must lose its global legitimacy, foreign minister says

Efforts aimed at adopting tougher sanctions against Iran must be boosted, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said over the weekend during a meeting with Argentinean Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernandez.

The remarks were made ahead of the next session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 2009.

Turning his attention to the Iranian leadership, Lieberman said that "a regime that denies the Holocaust and fires at citizens who hold a legitimate protest must lose its legitimacy in the world and in every international forum."

A member of the foreign minister's entourage said the Argentinean hosts apologized to Lieberman and his associates over the fierce demonstrations he encountered upon arrival in Buenos Aires. The Argentineans said the protests were organized by the Venezuelan government and its President Hugo Chaves, who transfes funds to radical movements specializing in organizing such rallies.

In a meeting with local parliament members, Lieberman asked them to make an effort to implement the free trade agreement among Israel, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

During his visit, the foreign minister met with the leaders of young South American Jews and urged them to move to Israel. He also met with the relatives of terror victims in the Buenos Aires attacks carried out 17 years ago.

.

On Sunday, Lieberman is scheduled to proceed with his visit to Peru.
