The Foreign Ministry confirmed the details with Ynet and said: "This is a shocking report; the Montreal consulate is corresponding with the local authorities."
According to Canadian media reports, Montreal police arrested the victim's partner, 33, and are planning to indict him for second-degree murder. The body of the victim, who was living with his partner in Ottawa, was discovered Thursday morning by a passerby inside a suitcase on the streets of Montreal.
"We are shocked," one of the victim's friends told Ynet. "He was in Israel just a few months ago and everything was fine; he was our friend, we were in the same community group in Tel Aviv.
"Two years ago he met a Canadian guy and moved in with him," said the friend. "We haven't been in close touch since he moved there; he came for a friend's birthday in April and that's the last time I saw him," he added.
"We are also shocked that his partner, for whom he moved to Canada, is suspected of murdering him," said the friend, adding that the victim's mother has received the bad news.
According to Canadian reports, the suspect turned himself in to authorities Thursday night. A police spokesperson told local media that after finding the suitcase, medical teams tried to revive the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. "I don't think he was stabbed or shot; we are waiting for the autopsy report for more details," said the spokesperson.
