Motorsports come to Jenin

Fast-track training: British Consulate sets up a project for young Palestinian women. Races in four main West Bank towns

Monte Carlo, out – Ramallah, in: The British Consulate in the West Bank city has initiated a project which will enable young local women to take part in motorsports. In a region like the Middle East, where car races and similar sports are not particularly popular, the following pictures are even more surprising.

Some young Palestinian women have already participated in motor racing, which is to arrive in various locations in the West Bank. Last week a race took place in Jenin, and another round is expected in Nablus, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Jericho.

Only women take part in the races. Most of the participants come from Jenin, Bethlehem, Ramallah and Jerusalem. The British Consulate has even supplied the specialized clothing required for the sport.

 

The British Consul in Ramallah explained that the purpose was to encourage women's sports in general and women in motorsports in particular.

 

The Consulate will soon prepare a course for the women, who will be trained by British racing champions, she said. So far, four women are participating, but more are expected to join.
