A 42-year-old teacher from Netanya was arrested overnight Friday on suspicion that she had beaten and starved her 10-year-old son.
The woman told investigators the abuse was her way of "educating" the boy.
At around 2 am neighbors complained to police of loud music coming from one of the apartments. Officers who were dispatched to the scene knocked on the door and demanded that the music be turned down, but the people inside the flat refused.
Only after the officers threatened to break the door down did the woman open it. The officers then searched the apartment and found the boy in one of the rooms with his 14-year-old brother. He was bleeding from his forehead and face and was covered with abrasions. He also had two "black eyes".
The woman and her spouse said the boy had fallen off his bicycle, but the officers arrested them.
During her interrogation the woman eventually admitted to beating her son, who told police that he had not eaten anything since the morning hours.
The woman, who teaches at a high school in Hod Hasharon, told investigators that she does not believe in the formal education system and has therefore been homeschooling her son since September.
She said her son would get into fights at his school and was caught stealing candy from a supermarket, and therefore she decided to "educate" him at home by hitting him with a carpet beater.
The investigation found that Thursday night's incident was not isolated and that the boy had been beaten several times before. The mother said she would turn up the music so neighbors would not hear her son's cries.
The woman's spouse, who did not take part in the abuse, was released to house arrest. The children were transferred to a shelter.
