Rightist activists attempted to bump into a Prison Service vehicle carrying Jewish terror suspect Haim Pearlman, police officials believe.
Pearlman is suspected of stabbing four Arabs to death in Jerusalem and trying to murder another seven. The vehicle targted on the road was transporting him and suspected accomplice David Sitbon to court.
The two suspects were brought to the Supreme Court on Thursday for a hearing. The two petitioned the court in a bid to be allowed to meet with their lawyers.
Upon the end of the hearing, Pearlman and Sitbon were returned to a Prison Service vehicle which was to transport them to another hearing in their case at the Petah Tikva District Court.
Shortly after leaving the court, the vehicle reached a junction in Jerusalem where a Mazda carrying right-wing activists tried to smash into it and block its way.
The prison vehicle's driver managed to stop on time and avoid a collision before continuing on his way.
Following the failed attempt, the activists continued to follow the Prison Service vehicle with their car while cheering Pearlman and Sitbon on using a megaphone. The Prison Service vehicle, accompanied by police cruisers, eventually managed leave the Mazda behind.
Police officials launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, a close Pearlman associate dismissed the report, charging that "the Shin Bet and Prison service are panicking."
"They're trying to hide Pearlman and isolate it from the outside world, and now they're creating the impression we're violent," he said. "A Prison Service vehicle attempted to run over protestors standing on the side of the road with signs. The announcement to the media is a Shin Bet and Prison Service spin."
