Hebrew U endorses students' anti-haredi protest

University president expresses support for campaign against yeshiva funding bill, orders Monday classes to end at 6 pm to allow staff, students to attend mass Jerusalem rally. Two students arrested after trying to enter prime minister's residence in capital

The president of the Hebrew University on Sunday expressed his support for the campaign against the yeshiva funding bill and called on students to join it.

"The university management shares the students' concern," Professor Menachem Ben-Sasson said in a message.

Meanwhile, two students were arrested Sunday night on suspicion they tried to break a fence and enter the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem as part of a protest which was held near the site. Security guards and police officers dispersed the other protestors.

A mass rally against yeshiva student stipends is scheduled to take place in Jerusalem on Monday. In an unusual step, the university has arranged that classes end by 6 pm to allow students and lecturers to participate in the demonstration.

In a message to the students Prof. Ben-Sasson said, "Despite the fact that the university is doing its best to help students with grants and scholarships the majority of our students pay for their studies themselves. It is only appropriate that the government support higher education and who but our students is more worthy for this support?"

The Hebrew University Student Union expressed satisfaction at Ben-Sasson's announcement.
